    The tarnished plant bug injured 21 Populus clones in the clonal nursery of the Packaging Corporation of America in Michigan. Degree of injury ranged from 0.5 to 81.09\u3c. Clone \u27Wisconsin 5\u27 sustained the heaviest attack, followed by Imperial Carolina poplar. \u27Wisconsin 5\u27 was salvaged by changing the standard and accepting shorter cutting stock for outplanting

    Pandemics and Partisanship: The Impact of Political Identity on Public Health Responses

    This literature review examines the intersection of political partisanship and public health responses during pandemics, with a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Historically, pandemics such as the Venetian plague (1575-1577) and the Great Plague of London (1665-1666) have elicited responses driven by socioeconomic and health factors. In contrast, the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. was distinctly shaped by pre-existing political affiliations, particularly between conservative and liberal factions. Applying Social Identity Theory (SIT), this review explores how group identity and partisanship influenced pandemic-related behaviors and attitudes. Empirical evidence indicates that Republican-leaning states experienced higher COVID-19 mortality rates, driven by resistance to public health measures. The review identifies gaps in the literature, particularly the need for controlling socioeconomic and health vulnerability variables to isolate the direct effect of polarization on pandemic responses. The findings underscore the significant role of partisanship in shaping public health outcomes and suggest that future research should further quantify its impact to inform more effective public health strategies

    Using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as Adjunct Therapy in Diabetic Foot Ulcers

    Objective: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common and serious complication of diabetes, often resulting in prolonged healing, infection, and lower extremity amputation. This capstone project evaluates the effectiveness of total contact casting (TCC) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in promoting wound healing and reducing amputation rates in DFU patients. TCC is widely considered the gold standard for off-loading, while HBOT is emerging as an adjunct for refractory ulcers. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using Google Scholar. Searches from 2019 onward included terms such as “HBOT AND amputation rates,” “TCC AND amputation rates,” and “DFU management.” Studies were selected based on quantitative outcomes, including healing time and amputation rates. Five peer-reviewed studies—two on TCC and three on HBOT—met inclusion criteria and were critically analyzed. Results: TCC consistently demonstrated high efficacy in promoting ulcer healing and remains the preferred method for mechanical off-loading. Modifications such as Total Contact Soft Cast and ventral-window TCC improve usability while maintaining effectiveness. HBOT was associated with reductions in major amputations and improved healing in non-responsive ulcers. However, findings on minor amputation outcomes were inconsistent, and HBOT introduced greater risks of adverse events and logistical burdens due to variable protocols and limited access. Conclusion: TCC remains central in DFU management. HBOT may serve as a valuable adjunct in select refractory cases but should be used judiciously. Future research should standardize HBOT protocols and compare outcomes directly against off-loading strategies.     Using Monte Carlo Simulations to Predict the Detection of White Dwarf Binary Star Systems

    Interest in close binary star systems has led to increased efforts to find more. One method of doing so involves taking 2 spectra of many objects of interest and comparing the radial velocities, or speed toward and away from us, derived from them in search of binarity. Statistical tests are then applied to determine if the measured difference in radial velocities is significant. A significant difference would indicate a binary, while an insignificant difference would not. An issue with this, which can be resolved by increasing the number of observations taken, is that a binary may go undetected if the spectra happen to be taken at similar points in its orbit. While the increase in number of observations would help, time and resources are valuable. As such, it is important to understand the level at which additional observations will improve the rate, or percentage, of binary detection. Here, a Monte Carlo simulation was run to create many theoretical binary systems of different inclinations, object masses, and orbital periods. These were then used to determine what fraction of systems would be detected as binaries using different numbers of observations. The simulations demonstrated increased binary detection rates for runs with 3 and 4 observations taken.
