    The Mariner and his Astronomer Father: Victorian Masculinities in Númenor

    A number of authors have analyzed the relationship between Aldarion and Erendis in the Unfinished Tales work The Mariner\u27s Wife. The strained relationship between Aldarion and his father, Tar-Meneldur, fifth king of Númenor, is less frequently examined, with the exception of the elder’s exasperation concerning his son’s desire for seafaring and reticence in marrying – a necessity to carry on the line of Kings in the island nation. What most commentators do not seem to note is that Meneldur is an interesting character himself, not only as Tolkien’s only named astronomer but in how Tolkien’s depiction of this avocation may actually align with not only Victorian gentlemen scientists, but the much broader topic of Victorian masculinities (plural), especially the important shift from a domestic “cult of the home” in the middle of the 19th century to a more adventurous ‘man of the empire’ (echoed in Aldarion) at century’s end. This paper uses a close reading of the father-son relationship to illustrate how these characters reflect two competing models of male masculinity from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the domestic and the colonial

    [Excerpt] The checkered beetles (Cleridae) have been included in local lists of Michigan Coleoptera by Andrews ( 1916, 192 1, 1929), Hatch (1924), Hubbard and Schwarz (1878). LeConte (1850), and Wolcott (1909). The present list is the first to include records from throughout the state, and is based on the collections of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology (UMMZ), those of the Department of Entomology, Michigan State University (MSUC), and the private collections of E. F. Giesbert, D. K. Young, and the author. This list records 35 species of Cleridae from the state, and I believe it is essentially complete, although future collecting in the southern counties may well produce new records

    A model was developed to simulate the life history of instar-I through instar-I1 spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens). Particular emphasis was given to the redistribution phases during spring and fall and the factors affecting budworm survival. Analyses included the effects of aggregated stand types, temperature, cloud cover, open areas, and the species distribution, on redistribution mortality. Of those stand factors examined, open area and non-host percentages were the most important in regulating redistribution survival

    Odonata of Coastal Peatland Habitats Adjacent to Lake Superior in Wisconsin

    We sampled adults and exuviae of Odonata in eleven coastal fens and poor fens near Lake Superior in Douglas, Bayfield, and Ashland counties in Wisconsin to determine species that were breeding in these areas, and gain knowledge about their relative abundances, flight periods, and nymphal habitats. The flora in these fens was characterized by mats of Sphagnum mosses, a variety of ericaceous shrubs, and a number of sedges, among which Carex lasiocarpa Ehrhart (slender sedge) was most dominant. We averaged seven visits per site from early June through September, 2004, to cover the flight periods of most species of Odonata at this latitude. Fifty species of Odonata were identified at the sites, 33 of which exhibited evidence of breeding. Species commonly breeding in the fens included Lestes disjunctus Selys (northern spreadwing), Coenagrion resolutum (Hagen in Selys) (taiga bluet), Enallagma hageni (Walsh) (Hagen’s bluet), Nehalennia irene (Hagen) (sedge sprite), Aeshna canadensis Walker (Canada darner), Williamsonia fletcheri Williamson (ebony boghaunter), Leucorrhinia frigida Hagen (frosted whiteface), L. glacialis Hagen (crimson-ringed whiteface), L. hudsonica (Selys) (Hudsonian whiteface), Libellula quadrimaculata Linnaeus (four-spotted skimmer), Sympetrum obtrusum (Hagen) (white-faced meadowhawk), and S. vicinum (Hagen) (autumn meadowhawk). Eight uncommon species were found to breed in at least one of the fens, including Lestes eurinus Say (amber-winged spreadwing), Aeshna sitchensis Hagen (zigzag darner), A. tuberculifera Walker (black-tipped darner), A. verticalis Hagen (green-striped darner), Somatochlora incurvata Walker (incurvate emerald), W. fletcheri, Nannothemis bella (Uhler) (elfin skimmer), and Sympetrum danae (Sulzer) (black meadowhawk). W. fletcheri and S. danae were found to be more common in these habitats than previously thought, causing their rarity status with the Natural Heritage Inventory of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to be relaxed, and they will no longer be actively tracked. Emergence and flight periods of Odonata in coastal peatlands began at least a week later than in similar inland peatlands in these counties

    Do you ever feel drained by everyday life and reflect on a moment of joy to remind yourself that there is light in life? This collection of works is titled “Small Moments of Joy”. These pieces are inspired by varying images of memories that draw out feelings of happiness for what was and pain for what will no longer be. Whether they are images of my parents\u27 past or took place within the past year, gazing at these stills provides an escape from reality and allows me to connect with the moment in the photo. The concept of memory draws many emotions that are reflected on when personally recreating these images. All pieces in this collection were created in standard photo sizes to mimic the feeling of looking at a picture wall in one\u27s house. Viewers can reflect on their own moments that bring them joy throughout their life and remind them that life is worth living for the small moments

    Modeling Energy Efficiency and Thermal Comfort in Aging Residential Buildings: The Impact of Temperature Control Systems on Occupant Behavior and Energy Consumption

    This study presents a model to investigate the effect of temperature control systems on energy efficiency and thermal comfort in aging residential buildings. The model addresses how heating systems, such as radiators and thermostats, interact with building elements and occupant behaviors to influence energy consumption. Focusing on variables such as building age, insulation quality, and outdoor temperature, the model simulates the dynamics of energy use within older structures. Drawing from datasets on energy consumption and existing simulation frameworks like NetLogo, the model incorporates the role of insulation, structural integrity, and occupant habits in determining energy efficiency. The simulation results reveal that buildings with poorer insulation experience more erratic energy consumption, particularly with traditional radiator-based heating systems, which lead to greater energy waste. Conversely, thermostat-regulated heating systems maintain a more stable temperature, significantly reducing energy consumption. Occupant behavior, such as opening windows during extreme temperatures, remains a critical factor influencing energy efficiency, even with temperature control systems in place. The study highlights the importance of integrating better insulation, optimized heating strategies, and informed occupant behavior to achieve sustainable energy management in aging buildings. The results also suggest areas for future model improvements, including the integration of additional environmental factors and more complex occupant behavior simulations to refine predictions and enhance real-world applicability
