    Micromobility Paths at Valparaiso University

    This paper evaluates the need and potential benefits of creating micromobility routes on the Valparaiso University campus. Student education on college campuses is supported by not only the faculty and staff who run the campus, but by the infrastructure that enables its daily functions. A crucial part of this infrastructure comes in the form of transportation routes, including: sidewalks, walking paths and roads. On these routes, diverse modes of transportation interact, at times with varying levels of cohesiveness. Challenges can occur when these modes of transportation conflict, leading to a decrease in user comfort and safety. With its vast and luscious green spaces across maturing landscapes, Valparaiso University has created an above-average campus environment, appealing and accessible to pedestrians and vehicles alike. One mode of transportation in growing demand that was not planned for on VU’s campus is micromobility, which includes electric scooters, one-wheels and other electric powered options, as well as bicycles. Oftentimes, micromobility users are required to use either walking paths or roads to get around, and in doing so they interfere with pedestrians and vehicles respectively. The addition of a micromobility routes across Valparaiso University’s campus will provide safe routes for these users. This would also encourage more outdoor activity, and reduce transportation time for pedestrians or bus riders. This paper highlights the importance and benefits to implementing routes on campus and proposes possible routes offering students, faculty, staff, and our community a safe and efficient transit route that is accessible for all

    130nm Chip Design

    The purpose of this project is to research, test, design, and fabricate a custom microchip. The focus is on CMOS VLSI with an emphasis on digital logic design, design methodology, and testing techniques. The microchip is designed using Verilog and simulated using a suite of tools and testbenches such as Cocotb, GTKWave, and Icarus Verilog. Once verified, the design is submitted to Tiny Tapeout for fabrication. The chip functions as a base-60 binary clock that displays time in a 12-hour format using 16 LEDs. The time can be set using a switch and a few control buttons, allowing it to be synchronized with the real-world time. This project demonstrates the full workflow from digital design to physical chip fabrication, with a key objective of validating the design before production. The expected outcome is a functional, fabricated microchip that successfully implements the binary clock design. Through this work, insights are gained into the design process of ASICs, from an HDL to real-world hardware. This research contributes to the understanding of digital design and chip prototyping methods

    A Culture of Accountability through Ethical Leadership Drives Citizenship Behavior in Ghana’s Traditional System of Leadership

    This study seeks to investigate the influence of accountability on the community citizenship behavior of followers in Ghana\u27s traditional system of leadership with the mediating role of ethical leadership behavior. A cross-sectional survey design was used to obtain quantitative data from 319 Ghanaians through questionnaires. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.1.0.3 was utilized to test the study’s hypotheses. The results showed that accountability (ACC) was a significant predictor of ethical leadership behavior but had no direct effect on community citizenship behavior (CCB). Additionally, the relationship between ACC and CCB was partially mediated by ethical leadership behavior. The research findings indicate that accountability is a key antecedent of ethical leadership, whereas citizenship behavior is a significant outcome of ethical leadership. This research concentrated exclusively on the context of the traditional system of leadership. To foster extra-role and community citizenship behaviors, leaders must create a culture of accountability within their institutions, act as ethical role models, and promote ethical norms in their duties. This study provides new insights and broadens the discourse on ethical leadership by exploring its mediation mechanism as well as emphasizing accountability as a crucial antecedent of ethical leadership

    A survey of native bees (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) at lakeplain prairie and prairie fen habitats in Michigan

    Michigan’s lakeplain prairie and prairie fen natural communities contain refugia for many at-risk species of insects, including species that are listed at the federal and state level. Wild bees are a group of insects crucial for maintaining robust plant-pollinator communities. Numerous species of bees are presumed to be in decline. However, baseline community surveys are lacking and needed to document the status of species occupying these natural communities. In 2021, Michigan Natural Features Inventory completed wild bee surveys in lakeplain prairie (lakeplain wet-mesic prairie and lakeplain wet prairie) and prairie fens in Michigan using a combination of aerial netting and bowl trapping. A total of 1,118 wild bees, representing 104 unique species or morphospecies, were collected during these surveys, including new state records for Dufourea marginata (Cresson, 1878) and Sphecodes nigricorpus Mitchell, 1956. The baseline inventory of wild bees in 2021 provides valuable information on species presence at these locations and suggests that they may act as refuges for rare species of native bees in the state. Continued management of lakeplain prairie and prairie fen natural communities should take into consideration wild bee communities and strive to ensure populations maintain stable numbers

    Flowers of Black-Seeded and Yellow-Seeded Oilseed Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense): Abundance, Timing, and Potential Insect Visitors

    Pennycress is being developed in the Midwestern USA as a new oilseed crop that provides numerous ecosystem services. These services include being an early spring source of pollen and nectar for flower-visiting insects. Most past research on pennycress flower visitors used wild genotypes of pennycress. All wild genotypes have seed coats that are black, which occurs because of high levels of proanthocyanadins (PACs). Concentrations of PACs are minimal in newly developed genotypes with yellow-colored seed coats. However, little is known regarding flower abundance and timing nor insect visitation preferences for black-seeded genotypes (BSG) or yellow-seeded genotypes (YSG) of pennycress. Flower densities were recorded and pan traps were deployed weekly during pennycress flowering at nine site-years in Illinois and Minnesota to examine anthesis and insect preferences for BSG vs. YSG pennycress. BSG and YSG flowered simultaneously, responded similarly to post-sowing growing degree days (peaking at 700 GDD4°C), and produced comparable numbers of open flowers (up to 10,000 m-2) on any given day, although BSG produced significantly greater numbers of cumulative flowers over the course of anthesis in three of nine site-years. Overall, the percentages of all trapped insects comprised of differing taxonomic orders were as follows: Diptera (flies) 33-37%, Thysanoptera (thrips) 27-30%, Hymenoptera (bees and wasps) 13-20%, Hemiptera (true bugs) 7-8%, Coleoptera (beetles) 5-6%, and Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) 1-3%. Generally, there were no significant differences in the relative abundance of insects found in YSG versus BSG pennycress across site-years. Occasionally, however, pan traps in BSG pennycress contained more insects, which mainly was due to high Dipteran populations. These results suggest that genetic selections for yellow seed coats (with low PACs) will have little impact on flower abundance and attractiveness to most insect visitors

    Notes and new records for parasitoids of exotic drosophilids in Indiana, USA (Hymenoptera: Figitidae and Braconidae)

    We report the first detection of two parasitoids of the invasive spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), in Indiana, USA: Leptopilina japonica Novković & Kimura (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) and Asobara c.f. rufescens (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). These wasps, newly reported here from Indiana, were detected in the drowning solution of Scentry spotted-wing drosophila monitoring traps located in a blueberry orchard in northern Indiana. These parasitoids were detected in monitoring traps from 10-June-2024 until 19-Aug-2024, with more detections of L. japonica than A. c.f. rufescens. We also report detection of the African fig fly, Zaprionus indianus Gupta (Diptera: Drosophilidae), in the drowning solution of traps on two dates at the end of the monitoring period in August. Our observations extend the known range of these D. suzukii parasitoids and suggest that parasitoids and their Drosophila hosts may be surveyed simultaneously in the same traps and bycatch of ongoing fly surveys could be leveraged for parasitoid monitoring
