The Distribution Of Some Soil Arthropods In A Manipulated Ecosystem

    No full text
[Excerpt] Soil cultivation practices and agricultural utilization affect soil animal populations in various ways. Gisin (1955) and Schalk (1968) concluded that the effect was minimal. Others observed a deleterious effect (Karg, 1956; Sheals, 1956; Strebel, 1957; Aleinikova and Utrobina, 1975; Edwards and Lofty, 1975). However, some soil animals appear to be benefited (Aleinikova and Utrobina, 1975; Edwards and Lofty, 1975). The effects of cultivation and many other factors have been discussed thoroughly in reviews by Christiansen (1964), Burges and Raw (1967), Butcher, et al. (1971), Ghilarov (1975), and Wallwork (1976)

Slavic influences in the Soviet adaptation of The Fellowship of the Rings

    Get PDF
In 1991 Leningrad TV published a dramatization miniseries based on the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, entitled Khraniteli (Хранители). Unfortunately, due to the turbulent political situation in the Soviet Union at that time, the series was only televised once, the idea of making sequels based off the other two volumes abandoned, and the whole project fell into oblivion until 2021, when the sucessor of Lenigrad TV uploaded Khraniteli to its youtube channel. Naturally, this aroused a lot of commotion among Tolkien fans who, comparing it to the better known Jackson’s adaptation, found it funny and ridiculous. This paper aims to explore how what the Western viewers may find riduculous about the depiction of the characters actually stems from the film-makers being inspired by traditional Slavic imagery and folklore. Particularly, it looks into the use of a narrator figure so typical for Soviet fairy-tale films, the depiction of Boromir as a Russian bogatyr, Gollum as a vodjanoj, and Gandalf as the wise old man, comparing their visualisation to similar figures from other Slavic films

Invertebrate Communities Associated with Three Early Phases of a Prairie Restoration Project

    Get PDF
While specific invertebrate groups have been studied in prairie restorations, there are few studies that look at terrestrial invertebrate assemblages. We surveyed invertebrates in three phases of plant restoration that were part of a larger restoration project. This cross-sectional study of invertebrate recovery at two, four and five years post-restoration shows there was no overall difference in invertebrate taxa richness and diversity between restoration phases. Overall abundance was greatest in the most recently restored area. Richness, diversity and abundance of six functional groups did not differ. The conclusion is that all phases are still characterized by pioneer invertebrate assemblages, and development to more diverse and richer assemblages might take more than five years in prairie restoration projects. The new and unexpected finding was that the reestablishment of invertebrate assemblages was not closely tied to vegetation restoration. Th

Phyllopalpus pulchellus Uhler, the Handsome Trig (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), A Confirmed Michigan Resident

    Get PDF
[excerpt] Phyllopalpus pulchellus Uhler is a member of the Trigonidiinae, also called trigs, sword-tail crickets (Capinera et al. 2004), or more informally, bush crickets; the common name is the Handsome Trig or Red-headed Bush Cricket. The distinctive features of this small cricket (less than 15 mm)—the large black palps, light yellow legs, shiny black wings, and red pronotum and head—are not seen in any other crickets within its range. The Handsome Trig can be found throughout much of the U.S. east of extreme east Texas and south of approximately 41.5° latitude, just south of the Michigan state border (Walker 2003)

    A Story Through Two Mediums

    Get PDF
Inspired by story telling and my interests in multiple different art mediums, I decided upon a creative project utilizing both photography and comic/graphic novels to act as a memoir and documentary of my semester abroad in Japan. While I was there I spent time studying the concept of the “Medium is the Message” and through this project I continued to explore what that really looked like. I took photos and kept a diary while in Japan. Upon coming back, I started the comic book process of storyboarding, making a script, drawing/coloring, and finally editing. Simultaneously I organized my photos and curated a selection of ones to present and then hung them in the exhibit. The comic acts as a more personal and direct commentary of my experience while the photos work to bring them to places I traveled and provoke the feeling of what life was like. My purpose with this project was to make two separate bodies of work to compliment each other when presented together as one as well as encouraging others to do things like study abroad and share their story. Hopefully with this project I can further encourage more interdisciplinary dialogue

Start-Up Lost Time at Signals Using Countdown Timers

    No full text
Start-up lost time refers to the duration it takes for the first few vehicles in a queue to respond to a green light at a signalized intersection. This delay contributes to inefficiencies and impacts queuing, particularly at intersections that are operating at full capacity. We conducted a study to assess whether traffic signals equipped with a countdown timer for the green light significantly reduce start-up lost time. Utilizing video footage from signalized intersections in the Dominican Republic that feature a countdown timer, we measured the interval between the moment the light turned green and the time the first vehicle in each lane began to move. This timing will be compared to start-up lost times at signals in the United States without a countdown timer to determine the efficacy of countdown timers in decreasing total vehicle delay at signalized intersections

    Bilbo\u27s Boethian Heroism

    Get PDF
Tolkien’s Boethian heritage has been amply explored, particularly for The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, but little scholarly attention has been paid to his development of Boethian ideals in The Hobbit, especially in regard to Bilbo’s heroic arc and the importance of luck on his journey. I argue that Tolkien develops Bilbo’s heroic identity and his famous “luck” as the actions of Fortune on behalf of Fate and divine Providence, interpreting the influential theology from Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy as a new kind of heroism that fulfills the teachings of Lady Philosophy

    Security and Accessibility

    No full text
As time progresses, the implementation of website security and accessibility are often seen as a priority for most website and application development. Website security focuses on the protection of the website, and web accessibility focuses on the inclusivity and usability for everyone regardless of their disabilities. Although thee two mostly have differing objectives, there is some significant overlap between the two when it comes to implementation. Something as simple as not having the appropriate headers on a website could lead to severe vulnerabilities that could lead to attacks such as Cross-site scripting or SQL injection, and also conflict with screen readers ability to read the header as well, causing issues for the visually impaired. A series of penetration and web accessibility tests were done to full stack applications developed by other fellow classmates, in order not to find any of these security and accessibility flaws, but how much they affect each other as well
