    An evaluation of the growth and yield of perennial cereals in two contrasting environments - observed data

    This research compared the growth of three candidate perennial cereals,intermediate wheatgrass, mountain rye, and hybrid perennial wheat, to a forage species (tall wheatgrass) and annual winter wheat. The crops were grown in two contrasting Australian cropping and livestock regions, Cowra in NSW (temperate) and Pittsworth, Queensland (sub-tropical). In the first year treatments included early, late, and early plus late defoliation, to simulate grazing before reproductive development. Phenology was recorded monthly and the crops harvested each year as the plants reached grain maturity. The dataset contains the observation of each of the 4 replicates of each species and defoliation treatment at Cowra and Pittsworth. There are raw data sheets and summary sheets with the mean and SEM of each of the four replicates

    In 1987, UK researchers lamented how schools were organised “around the assumption that the nuclear family is the norm”. Families who did not fit this model were “either ignored (tactfully) or categorised as abnormal”. Several generations have passed through schools since then. And as we know, it remains very common for parents to be separated or divorced. In Australia, about 28% of children under 14 have parents who are separated. But in our new research, interviewees report surprisingly little has changed in schools’ interactions with separated parents in the past 40 years. They say schools still treat the nuclear family as the default and assume students have a mum and dad who are together

    Preparation of multi-hydroxy chitosan derivative and its synergistic effect on fire performance and mechanical properties of epoxy resin

    A chitosan derivative, named as HCS, was synthesized by a simple reaction of para-hydroxybenzaldehyde with chitosan (CS), and was then used in combination with 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) to obtain a biomass-based intumescent flame retardant (IFR) in epoxy resins (EPs). At a total addition of 5 mass% and a mass ratio of DOPO to HCS being 3:1, the modified EP (S4) successfully passed the vertical combustion (UL-94) V-0 rating with a limit oxygen index (LOI) value of up to 33.0%. CC tests showed a 21.6% reduction in both peak smoke production rate (PSPR) and peak heat release rate (PHRR), and 71.4% reduction in total smoke production (TSP) for sample S4 compared with EP. Ulteriorly, XPS, FTIR, SEM and Raman tests were performed on the char residues of different modified samples after CC tests. These results showed that the char residue of sample S4 had an intact and dense structure, which played a role in preventing hot and gas exchange. In a word, the combination of HCS and DOPO imparted better flame retardancy properties to the epoxy resin than the singular use of them. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the modified EPs were not impaired by the addition of HCS and DOPO

    Mental Health Policy in Brazil and Australia: Challenges for a Dignified and Effective Approach to Individuals with Mental Disorders

    This article is the result of a bibliographic and documentary survey conducted by researchers from Brazil and Australia on the mental health policies of both countries, identifying gaps, progress, and challenges. It is organized as follows: subsection 2 addresses the place of “madness” in the history of humanity, outlining approaches from influential authors on the subject; subsection 3 presents the Brazilian mental health policy with emphasis on processes of struggle and resistance and on setbacks; subsection 4 presents the Australian mental health policy with emphasis on the network of mental health services as well as the complexity in accessing these services. The structure of the article adheres to the sequence developed by the authors, focusing on what issues they considered most important to address regarding mental health policy in their respective countries. The differences in approach between the countries did not enable each section to have identical subtitles with pre-established content. It is intended that this article stimulates other contributions on a theme that involves a vulnerable population segment that has historically had its rights violated in approaches and treatments that do not meet their needs.     Nowadays, trajectory data is widely accessible and can be beneficial for various practical applications, such as location-based services, personalized recommendation, and traffic management. Despite the immense benefits in these scenarios, trajectories can reveal highly sensitive information about individuals, such as personal characteristics, movement patterns, visited locations, and social connections. Consequently, it is imperative to prioritize protecting privacy when conducting trajectory analyses. Existing privacy-preserving techniques focus on optimizing data utility but often overlook the diverse requirements for privacy preservation. To address this limitation, this paper aims to maximize both privacy and utility as a multi-objective optimization problem for Privacy-Preserving Trajectory Data Publishing (PPTDP). We propose a novel algorithm called Dynamic-Parameter Genetic Algorithm (DPGA) that utilizes the non-dominated sorting multi-objective optimization approach and genetic algorithm (GA). This algorithm designs the mutation and crossover strategies to dynamically adjust the mutation and crossover parameters and improve the solution’s quality. It also adopts a scramble mutation strategy that helps to achieve better population diversity. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in terms of solution accuracy and convergence result

    Sustainable mortar with waste glass fine aggregates and pond ash as an alkali-silica reaction suppressor

    The construction industry seeks sustainable alternatives to conventional materials, with numerous waste types currently destined for landfills offering potential for repurposing. This study examines the replacement of natural sand with crushed waste glass and using pond ash as a supplementary cementitious material in mortar, with a particular focus on mitigating alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and assessing compressive strength. Fly ash, widely recognised for its ASR suppression capabilities, is becoming less available due to the decline in coal-fired power generation, necessitating the exploration of pond ash as a viable alternative. However, given the prolonged storage of pond ash in repositories, its direct substitution for fly ash necessitates thorough investigation. Hence, microstructural and chemical analyses are conducted to investigate the underlying reaction mechanisms. The strength results show that glass can replace natural sand with minimal impact on compressive strength up to 60 %, beyond which strength decreases by 11 % at 100 % glass. However, the ASR expansion results indicate that using more than 20 % glass could lead to long-term detrimental effects. Nevertheless, pond ash effectively mitigates ASR, keeping expansions below 0.1 % at a 10 % OPC replacement, although it performs slightly less efficiently than fly ash. At 20 % replacement, pond ash performs similarly to fly ash. Pond ash outperforms fly ash in 28-day strength up to a 20 % OPC replacement and shows better strength development. The optimal balance between ASR mitigation and compressive strength is achieved with 20 % pond ash, allowing for higher glass utilisation without increasing the risk of AS

    Experimental investigation on the behaviour of FRP strengthened square hollow section steel members under monotonic and cyclic loading

    Strengthening and rehabilitation of square hollow sections (SHS) are a major concern nowadays as SHS may fail due to higher service loads, fabrication and construction errors, degradation of material over time and adverse effects of the cyclic loading due to earthquakes. In this study, a detailed experimental investigation has been carried out for the implications of using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) as a strengthening measure to mitigate the failure of SHS members under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Strengthened members displayed lower moment degradation and higher moment and energy dissipation capacities and higher stiffness and ductility compared to the bare steel members. Although the amount of CFRP and GFRP fibres were almost equal, CFRP strengthening can result in higher capacity sections due to having higher strength material properties compared to GFRP strengthening. The cyclic responses of the GFRP-strengthened member were close to that of the CFRP-strengthened member and can be more effective for strengthening steel SHS under cyclic flexural loading. The established theoretical model in the current paper can predict reliably the ultimate moment capacities of the strengthened SHS members. This study confirmed that strengthening SHS members with fibre composites will be effective for structures in seismically active regions

    Just How Radical Is Radical: Children’s Picture Books and Trans Youth

    This paper analyses the Australian children’s picture books The Gender Fairy, by Jo Hirst and Libby Wirt, and Introducing Teddy: A Gentle Story About Gender and Friendship, by Jess Walton and Dougal MacPherson. Both are examples of a rare engagement by Australian children’s authors and illustrators; indeed, Hirst has the distinction of being the first Australian author of a picture book with a trans protagonist. The authors and illustrators engage with trans issues within a socio-political context that continues to problematise gender identity, particularly when it pertains to young children. To circumvent at least some of the controversy their efforts might generate, the authors and illustrators balance the radical potential of their subject matter with the perceived needs of the marketplace and the constraints imposed by the genre. In doing so, they create books that are radical, but not so radical that they generate controversy that obscures their message

    Cyanophages play an important role in nutrient cycling in lakes since they can modulate the metabolism of cyanobacteria. A proper understanding of the impact of cyanophage infection on the metabolism and ecology of cyanobacteria is critical during a complete cycle of harmful algal bloom (HAB). The ecology of cyanophages in marine environments has been well-delineated, but cyanophages in freshwater lakes remain less studied. Here, we studied the diversity of cyanophages and their impact on host ecology and metabolism through the succession of HAB in Utah Lake, which is a shallow eutrophic freshwater lake, in 2019. We collected water samples at three different periods from two locations in freshwater Utah Lake. The three sampling periods represented the pre-bloom, peak-bloom, and post-bloom events. We observed that the Utah Lake virome was dominated by families Myoviridae, Siphoviridae, and Podoviridae under the order Caudovirales. We detected photosystem-related genes, sulfur assimilation genes, and pho regulon (phosphorus metabolism) genes in genomes of predicted cyanophages. We were able to capture the changes in relative abundance and expression of functional genes in genomes of cyanophage at different stages of the bloom. We observed higher relative abundance and expression of cyanophage-encoded pho-regulon genes in the “pre-bloom” period. The higher expression of pho-regulon genes in P-limited ecosystem of Utah Lake indicated the possible contribution of cyanophage to enhance the fitness of the host cyanobacteria. Our study provides some insightful findings on the role of cyanophages in controlling the ecology and relative abundance of host cyanobacteria in freshwater lakes
