Interprofessional education and collaborative practice with practicing radiographers: A mixed methods scoping review
Introduction
There is increasing evidence substantiating the advantages of Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) in healthcare. Despite this, global adoption is still in its infancy. Whilst there has been some recognition of the importance of collaborative practice in healthcare, implementation of IPECP programs remain limited in many countries.
Methods
This scoping review aimed to synthesise global evidence for the implementation and effectiveness of IPECP on practicing radiographers and to further identify the enablers and barriers to the implementation of IPECP within radiography. The JBI guidelines for the conduct of scoping reviews and the PRISMA guidelines for reporting scoping reviews were followed. Databases searched included Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane library, and JBI. Grey literature was searched through Google, Google Scholar, and the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global.
Results
Following full text screening, 21 articles were included in the review, and data was extracted onto a custom-developed template. IPECP competencies identified in the included studies were mapped against the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) framework of competencies.
Conclusion
Results indicate that while certain factors such as peer support and interprofessional communication facilitated IPECP, numerous barriers impeded its implementation on a wider scale.
Implications for practice
Implications for practice, policy and research include the need to prioritise funding for IPECP initiatives and to establish regulatory frameworks that support interprofessional collaboration
Exploring Healthcare Access Challenges Among South Asian Migrants in Australia: A Mixed-Method Study
Issue Addressed: Healthcare access disparities, particularly among migrant populations, are escalating. This research focuses on exploring aspects related to healthcare access disparities in the rapidly growing South Asian communities in Australia, which bear a disproportionate burden of chronic diseases.
Methods: This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-method approach (qualitative followed by quantitative), with
five focus group discussions (six to eight participants each) and an online survey (n = 460). NVivo and SPSS were used for qualitative and quantitative analysis, respectively.
Results: The study participants are from South Asia, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Thematic analysis of focus group discussions identified factors influencing healthcare service utilisation among migrants, including a preference for home remedies over doctor consultations, language barriers, limited access to relevant information, high costs of specialist and dental care, dissatisfaction with rushed doctor interactions and system-related
concerns. One in six survey respondents encountered challenges in accessing timely healthcare, with the most frequently reported barriers being prolonged waiting times (72%), out-of-pocket expenses (48%), and limited awareness and availability of services (36%). Migrants with multiple chronic diseases faced the highest barriers to accessing timely healthcare (57.8%), with significantly higher odds of encountering these barriers than those with no or one chronic condition (OR = 0.436, 95% CI = 0.222–0.856).
Conclusions: South Asian migrants face challenges to access affordable, timely, patient-centred healthcare. A robust collaboration between services, healthcare providers and the community is essential for sustainable solutions.
So What? Reducing waiting times and language barriers, improving awareness of available services and enhancing access to affordable specialist and dental services are imperative to foster equitable healthcare outcomes for Australia's diverse population
Does Carbon Risk Influence Stock Price Crash Risk? International Evidence
This article examines the relationship between carbon risk and future stock price crash risk, focusing on an international sample of firms. Inherently, complex and deep uncertainties of carbon risk limit investors’ ability to fully understand and incorporate carbon risk into equity pricing and create room for opportunistic managers to hide bad news about poor carbon performance. Such pricing uncertainties and information asymmetry can result in significant overpricing of stocks (i.e., underpricing of carbon risks), especially for carbon-intensive firms, thereby exposing these stocks to future stock price crash risks. In line with this argument, we find that carbon risk is positively associated with future stock price crash risk. However, we find that better carbon disclosure quality reduces pricing uncertainties and information asymmetry, which attenuates the positive effect of carbon risk on future stock price crash risk. Similarly, internal monitoring (e.g., corporate governance) and external monitoring (e.g., institutional investors and financial analysts) help alleviate information asymmetry related to carbon risk, thus reducing crash risk. In countries with stakeholder-oriented business cultures, high climate change performance, and financial transparency, as well as for companies that link compensation to climate change performance, the positive association between carbon risk and stock price crash risk is weaker
Probabilistic assessment of passive earth pressures considering spatial variability of soil parameters and design factors
The stability design of soil structures, such as retaining walls, has traditionally relied on deterministic analyses that use averaged soil parameters. However, modern computational advances, particularly Monte Carlo simulations (MCs), have highlighted the limitations of this approach. Engineers are now increasingly focused on understanding the probability of failure (PF) associated with specific safety factors. This study explores the impact of spatial variability in soil properties, specifically the friction angle and unit weight, on PF. By applying log-normal distributions and spatial correlation lengths, extensive MC simulations were combined with finite element limit analysis to establish relationships between safety factors and PF. This research makes several contributions to geotechnical engineering. It integrates MC simulations with finite element limit analysis to provide a statistically robust framework for evaluating PF in soil structures. The use of adaptive finite element meshes introduces new insights into failure mechanisms, addressing gaps in existing studies. Additionally, the study presents a set of parametric design charts that enable practitioners to estimate PF for specific safety factors effectively. These findings provide practical tools for design engineers, supporting better decision-making and increasing confidence in design outcomes
Beyond decolonising doctoral education: Alternatives for doctoral scholars
Higher education institutions, doctoral scholars and advisors are increasingly turning to decolonising theories as way to interrogate dominant knowledge production practices. While this theoretical paradigm enables scholars to ask questions around who has benefited from research, the scholarship is constrained by conceptual limitations often left unexamined. This chapter examines the decolonising doctoral education movement, mapping the opportunities and limitations for those wanting to engage with colonialism’s aftermath, and outlines alternatives for doctoral students wanting to move beyond decolonising paradigms. By engaging with a broader range of theoretical tools, we argue that possibilities exist for doctoral students to contribute to a scholarship that can navigate the legacy of colonial knowledge production without becoming trapped by or trying to escape these legacies
“Do you know who we are? We’re the educators, the real-life superstars”: Remixing hip-hop pedagogy with an affinity group
In this article, we present findings from a study undertaken with nine teachers working in diverse mainstream and alternative schooling contexts in Queensland, Australia, who participated in a year-long affinity group to understand the ways in which hip-hop pedagogy could support their pedagogical practice, professional identity, and well-being. Hip-hop pedagogy centers on a participatory ethic of collaboration and shared expression, which is also central to the affinity group method. The remixing of hip-hop pedagogy through the affinity group enabled teachers to (a) express vulnerability as an educator, (b) maintain safe spaces for learning and teaching, (c) share stories of practice, and (d) confront a lack of recognition that permeates schooling in this present moment. We contend that engaging in an affinity group provides creative opportunities for collective teacher professional and personal development, alongside the rich potential for affective engagement through hip-hop pedagogy as a praxis-based pedagogy
Ion-wind Powered Boat using a novel wire-dielectric water system
In the era of tightening environmental regulations and fast rising fossil fuel costs, green-energy propelling technologies have been in great demand for the maritime industry. By the electrohydrodynamic propulsion, this work demonstrates the launch of an ion-wind powered boat (iBoat) that offers a novel propeller-free approach with insignificant noise and rather low power consumption. The innovative design of the iBoat includes a conducting wire functioning as the emitter, while the water surface was exploited as the downstream electrode, thus, eliminating the need for the second electrode which is typically essential for the ion wind generation. The proposed ion wind propulsion system can generate a thrust-to-power ratio of 1.45 mN/W using a simple wire-dielectric-water configuration. In the experiment, we successfully launch the iBoat carrying payloads of 120 g with wiring connected to the external power supply system. This novel concept can potentially pave the way for the future development of propeller-free boats with insignificant noise in real-life applications including army and wildlife surveillance missions
