    In June this year, the city of St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, played host to the largest gathering of fishing, aquaculture and seafood-processing safety and health professionals: the Fifth International Fishing Industry Safety and Health Conference (IFISH 5), the only conference dedicated to improving safety and health in the fishing industry. Held from 10 to 13 June 2018 in the picturesque campus of St. John’s Memorial University, and blessed – contrary to gloomy weather forecasts – by a few days of unexpected sunshine between rainy ones, IFISH 5 explored the latest research on occupational safety and health; discussed current fisheries policy and regulations; and showcased best practices for keeping workers safe and healthy

    Effects of feeding rate on growth and feed efficiency of Sobaity seabream (Sparidentex hasta) fry in nursery phase

    A 30-day research was conducted to evaluate the effects of different feeding rate (formulated diet) (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% of wet body weight/day) and also fresh food (20% of wet body weight/day) on growth performance and feed utilization of Sparidentex hasta fry in nursery phase. Growth performance including final weight and specific growth rate (SGR) significantly increased with increasing feeding rate (p<0.05). The relationship between SGR (% per day) and ration level (% per day) was an asymptotic curve described as SGR = 0.2809X+1.4191. Feed efficiency ratio (FER) decreased significantly with increasing ration levels, and the relationship between FER and ration level (% per day) described as FER =-0.0586X+1.3184. Hepatosomatic index significantly increased with increasing feeding rate (p<0.05). Based on the above results, it may be concluded that a ration size of 8% of body weight per day is optimal for good growth and feed conversion efficiency of juvenile S. hasta in nursery phase

    Hydrographic-hydrochemical assessment of the Baltic Sea 2017

    ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The article summarizes the hydrographic-hydrochemical conditions in the western and central Baltic Sea in 2017. Based on meteorological conditions, the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen/hydrogen sulphide and nutrients are described on a seasonal scale. For the southern Baltic Sea area, the “cold sum” of the air temperature of 31.7 Kd in Warnemünde amounted to a mild winter in 2014/15 and ranks as 15th warmest winter since the beginning of the record in 1948. The summer “heat sum” of 159.5 Kd ranks on 28th position of the warmest summers over the past 70 years and is slightly above the long-term average of 153.4 Kd. Based on satellite derived Sea Surface Temperature (SST) 2017 was the eleventh-warmest year since 1990 and with 0.24 K slightly above the long-term SST average. March, April and October - December contributed to the average by their positive anomalies. July and August were characterized by negative anomalies. The anomalies reached maximum values of +2 K and -3 K. The situation in the deep basins of the Baltic Sea was mainly coined by beginning stagnation at bottom-near water depths of the eastern Gotland Basin and ongoing ventilation of the upper part 5 of the deep-water above 150 m as a consequence of weak inflows. For the first time within this phase of intensified inflow activity, starting in 2014, the ventilation of the Farö Deep at the Northern Central Basin was registered at the beginning of the year. In the course of 2017 two weak inflows showing total volumes of 210 km^³ (February) and 188 km^³ (October) were registered. In conclusion, the impact of the observed phase of intensified water exchange processes with subsequent consequences for the biogeochemical cycles is weakening. GERMAN ABSTRACT: Die Arbeit beschreibt die hydrographisch-hydrochemischen Bedingungen in der westlichen und zentralen Ostsee für das Jahr 2017. Basierend auf den meteorologischen Verhältnissen werden die horizontalen und vertikalen Verteilungsmuster von Temperatur, Salzgehalt, Sauerstoff/ Schwefelwasserstoff und Nährstoffen mit saisonaler Auflösung dargestellt. Für den südlichen Ostseeraum ergab sich eine Kältesumme der Lufttemperatur an der Station Warnemünde von 31,7 Kd. Im Vergleich belegt der Winter 2016/17 den 15. Platz der wärmsten Winter seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen im Jahr 1948 und wird als mild klassifiziert. Mit einer Wärmesumme von 159,5 Kd rangiert der Sommer im Mittelfeld der 70jährigen Datenreihe und reiht sich auf Platz 28 der wärmsten Sommer ein. Das Langzeitmittel liegt bei 153,4 Kd. Auf der Grundlage von satellitengestützten Meeresoberflächentemperaturen (SST) war 2017 das elft- wärmste Jahr seit 1990 und mit 0,24 K etwas über dem langfristigen SST-Mittel. März, April und Oktober - Dezember trugen durch ihre positiven Anomalien zum Durchschnitt bei. Juli und August waren durch negative Anomalien gekennzeichnet. Die Anomalien erreichten Höchstwerte von +2 K und -3 K. Die Situation in den Tiefenbecken der Ostsee war im Wesentlichen geprägt durch bodennah einsetzende Stagnation im östlichen Gotland Becken und Belüftung der mittleren Wassersäule oberhalb 150 m im Zuge kleinerer Einströme. Zu Jahresbeginn wurde das im nördlichen Zentralbecken gelegene Farö Tief erstmals innerhalb der aktuellen Einstromphase belüftet. Im Jahresverlauf 2017 wurden zwei weitere schwache Einströme mit Volumina zwischen 210 km³ und 188 km³ im Februar sowie Oktober registriert. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass die Auswirkungen der seit 2014 beobachten Phase von verstärkten Wasseraustauschprozessen mit entsprechenden Konsequenzen für die biogeochemischen Kreisläufe abklingen

    Effects of single and combined supplementation of Lactobacillus plantarum with dietary xylooligosaccharide on growth performance, body composition and physiological responses of sobaity (Sparidentex hasta) fingerling

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the single and combined effects of dietary probiotic with prebiotic on growth performance, non-specific immune response, body composition, digestive enzymes activity and intestine bacterial flora of sobaity fingerling (Sparidentex hasta). For this purpose, 425 individuals of sobaity fingerlings were prepared with an average weight of 7.64 ± 0.3 g from the Mariculture Research Station of South Iranian Aquaculture Research Center. This study was carried out in a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications (45 fish per each replication) in fiberglass tanks with 300 liters volume. Fish were fed with feed containing 0 (control group), 10^6 CFU probiotic per gram feed (treatment 1), 0.5 and 1 percent prebiotic plus10^6 CFU probiotic per gram feed (treatment 2 and 3) at 4.5 percent of body weight for a period of 42 days. At the end of the experiment, body composition, intestine, blood, plasma and mucus samples were collected. The obtained results indicated that dietary prebiotic and probiotic did not change growth performance, intestine bacterial flora and non-specific immune response of sobaity (P > 0.05). Nonetheless, plasma bactericidal activity of control group was significantly higher that treatment 3 (P < 0.05). Moisture and protein content of treatment 2 showed significant different compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The results of this study showed that digestive enzymes activity including alkaline protease, amylse and lipase affected by administration of dietary prebiotic and probiotic (P < 0.05). Overall, this study showed that single supplementation of probiotic and combination with prebiotic at the used amounts had no positive effects on growth performance and intestine bacterial flora and immune response (except plasma bactericidal activity) of sobaity but improve digestive enzymes activity

    Survey on parasite infection of two years old carp bream, Abramis brama, to Ligula intestinalis in Alagol lake and Gorganroud (Golestan dam) - Golestan province

    To evaluate the infection of carp bream (Abramis brama) with ligula intestinalis in Golestan province, 92 fish samples from two regions: Gorganroud (61 samples) and Alagol lakes (31 samples) were investigated. According to the result in the present study, the prevalence of ligula intestinalis plerocercoid infestation in carp bream from Alagol Lake for male, female and overall (male and female) were 5.88%, 7.14% and 6.45%, respectively, also in the Gorganroud river for male, female and overall (male and female) were recorded as 22.22%, 26.47%, and 24.59%, respectively. Based on the statistical analysis, the prevalence of this parasite in fish specimens from the Gorganroud was recorded significantly higher than Alagol lake`s specimens. In this study, the mean intensity ± SD of parasite infestation for carp beam in Alagol Lakes and Gorganroud were recorded as 2.5 ± 2.1 and 2.00 ± 1.25, respectively. There was no significant difference in mean intensity of ligula intestinalis infection between two mentioned regions (P<0.05). The length of isolated and number of isolated parasites for each infected fish was different between 6 -64 cm and 1-5 numbers respectively. Totally, mean prevalence and intensity of ligula intestinalis infection for both regions in Golestan province were recorded as: 18.48 % and 2.05 ± 1.25 number (per infected fish) respectively. There was no significant difference between male and female for prevalence and intensity of parasite infection in this study (P<0.05)
