Incidence and energetics of AGN winds in the distant Universe
The initial growth phases of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are crucial in galaxy evolution, with AGN feedback playing a significant role. However, selecting sources in the feedback phase remains challenging. This thesis focuses on the selection and characterization of AGN in the feedback phase, emphasizing the study of ionized outflows and their impact on host galaxies. The first part presents methods used to isolate ~1400 AGN candidates from the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) catalog and the outflow properties derived for a subsample of 23 sources with confirmed ionized winds. For z > 0.5 AGN with detected ionized outflows, we report correlations between mass outflow rate, outflow kinetic power, and AGN bolometric luminosity. However, a weak correlation between maximum outflow velocity and AGN bolometric luminosity highlights the importance of sample selection. Spatially resolved spectroscopic data from MUSE was used to study the morphology and kinematics of ionized gas in a red, obscured quasar within an interacting system. Extended ionized outflows with high velocities and mass outflow rates were observed, likely AGN-driven rather than star formation-driven. However, kinetic coupling efficiencies were low, suggesting the outflows are not energetically significant. Finally, machine learning techniques enhanced AGN selection in the feedback phase. A Random Forest Classifier achieved 95% accuracy in classifying AGNs into feedback and non-feedback phases. This work demonstrates the potential of machine learning in identifying AGN feedback phases in large-scale surveys like eRASS1. This thesis provides insights into the selection, characterization, and impact of AGN outflows on their host galaxies, advancing our understanding of galaxy evolution. Findings suggest that outflows may or may not significantly impact host galaxies, depending on kinetic coupling efficiencies
The criminal protection of the marine environment. Origins, development and protection techniques in the national, supranational and comparative context.
The research aims to contribute to the study of environmental criminal law, taking into consideration the criminal provisions that are relevant in the case of offense - actual or potential - of marine waters.
Specifically - due to the increasingly frequent cases of pollution and environmental disasters caused by the introduction of toxic substances into marine waters, attributable to business activities and navigation - the purpose of the work is to dwell, starting from the International and European dimension of the phenomenon, on the criminal provisions in force in our legal system for the protection of marine natural resources, on the ways in which they are typified and on the possible perpetrators of these crimes, evaluating - in more general terms - whether the current national system of guardianship or whether it is not necessary to rethink the role of criminal law in this area.
To broaden the context of the investigation, the corresponding French, Spanish and US discipline will be taken into consideration; this choice is based on the fact that the three most significant marine environmental disasters in modern history occurred respectively off the coasts of Breton (tanker Erika), Galicia (ship Prestige) and Louisiana (oil platform Deep Water Horizon)
Housing in the age of circular economy. Models and paradigms for the regeneration of suburbs
The Italian residential building stock amounts to 12.2 million units, of which 57.5% have more than fifty years and were built without a regulatory framework regarding seismic safety, fire resistance, energy efficiency and accessibility. Nowadays, they show a condition of irreversible obsolescence. How renovate this heritage means choosing between the two macro-categories intervention strategies: demolition/reconstruction or refurbishment. This doctoral research aims to investigate the demolition and reconstruction of residential urban blocks from 1945-1965 as a possible strategy for urban regeneration, integrated with a model based on circular economy principles. The construction characteristics and guidelines of this ecosystemic design model, named Integrho, which combines whole-life-cycle ecodesign criteria (Building in Layers, Design for Disassembly, and Design out Waste) with bioclimatic and functional adaptability criteria, are defined. The work has been structured according to two hierarchical levels: urban scale and building scale; these two levels are mutually connected through the intermediate dimension of the urban block. The methodological goal is to define a decision-support tool that directs between the two macro-categories of intervention: demolition/reconstruction or refurbishment, employing objective parameters assessed through simplified comparative analyses. The methodology is applied to Bologna’s urban area and is founded on creating an in-depth knowledge base by cataloguing the 8.209 residential building permits from 1945 to 1965. This georeferenced tool, containing data, i.e. typology, construction techniques, etc., is employed to estimate the energy consumption, the quantities of construction materials, the environmental impacts and the economic costs of different scenarios in the whole life cycle quantitatively. Finally, the application of the Integrho building model, and the “Reconstruction for Regeneration” paradigm to one of the selected suburban blocks, is used as an exemplification of the entire process, from the knowledge phase to the instrumental one, to verify its reliability and applicability of methodology on a large scale
Einaudi's education. History of the series for children and young adults (1933-1983)
The purpose of this study is to highlight the intentions and criteria with which the children's series published by the Einaudi publishing house were conceived, and to determine the model of childhood imagined as the target audience for these publications. The series examined in this study include: "Libri per l'infanzia e la gioventù" (1942); "Libri per ragazzi" (1959-1983); "Letture per la scuola media" (1965-1983); "Tantibambini" (1972-78). In addition to the collections of fairy tales from around the world, not strictly intended for children but central to the publisher's reflection on the theme, a publishing project in collaboration with the Cooperative Education Association, which marked the beginning of the editorial relationship between Mario Lodi and Einaudi, was also examined. The research is based on the examination of unpublished documentation preserved at the Historical Archive Giulio Einaudi Editore in Turin, with particular reference to correspondence between authors and editors. A careful analysis of the sources showed that the editors of the series selected texts that were far from a sugar-coated conception of childhood, but rather brought "real" characters into the readers' houses, extremely realistic and immersed in the contemporary world, with all its contradictions. In contrast to previous and contemporary production, adult writers were invited to write for children, granting children's literature equal dignity with adult literature, and proposing difficult topics, assuming the readers as capable of confronting life's injustices and challenges. An important aspect was the ideological component, generally left-wing, sometimes communist, which runs through much of the publications examined and informed editorial choices, in accordance with the publisher's orientations, making the Einaudi series an example of the outcome of the convergence between culture, pedagogy, and literature typical of children's literature
The indigenous peoples displaced by environmental disasters. A study on the impact on the right to religious freedom.
Indigenous peoples, traditionally, due to a combination of historical, social, economic, and environmental factors, find themselves in a particularly vulnerable situation. The marginalization and discrimination they generally suffer manifest in difficulties accessing basic services and economic opportunities.
In a global context where sudden or slow-progressing environmental disasters, characteristic of climate change, are increasing, peoples rooted in territories and intimately linked to a way of life and their natural resources are particularly affected. These disasters not only threaten the physical safety and subsistence of these communities but, as an adaptation measure, also force them to move forcibly in search of safer living conditions, integrating into foreign societies.
For indigenous peoples, this forced displacement not only implies the loss of their homes and livelihoods but also results in the rupture of their spiritual and religious connection with their ancestral territories. These territories are not only seen as physical lands but also as sacred spaces that house the history, traditions, and spiritual beliefs of these peoples.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the particularity of indigenous spirituality, and how the religious factor is affected by forced displacement, which often becomes permanent, resulting in the complete disconnection from ancestral territories. It is in this circumstance, under the light of international texts and jurisprudence, that we seek to obtain responses and proposals regarding the violation of the human right to religious freedom, which is one of the main challenges faced by indigenous peoples identitarily, ultimately impacting their subsistence.I popoli indigeni, tradizionalmente, a causa di una combinazione di fattori storici, sociali, economici e ambientali, si trovano in una particolare situazione di vulnerabilità.
Studies on Procopius of Caesarea's Anecdota: a linguistic and stylistic commentary on Proc. An. 1-12.
The dissertation consists of a commentary on the first twelve chapters of Procopius of Caesarea's Anecdota, preceded by a general study on the author and the work. Although scholarly attention on the author has increased in recent years, a commentary on the Anecdota is still a desideratum.
The dissertation opens with an introductory study that contextualizes the work, addresses the most debated issues (e.g., dating, genre, reliability, etc.), and problematizes the linguistic-stylistic aspects; it includes the Greek text, based on the most recent critical edition (Mihăescu 1972), along with a facing translation. The Greek text follows, according to the most recent critical edition (Mihăescu 1972), accompanied by a facing translation; in the introductory essay, all the passages deviating from the reference edition are listed. The commentary on Proc. An. 1-12 is structured by lemmata: the analysis, while not neglecting the historical perspective, focuses on the philological, textual, stylistic, and literary dimensions.
The particular attention given to language reveals ongoing themes within Procopius's heterogeneous production and opens up a deeper understanding of the Anecdota, its ideology, and its context
La democrazia deliberativa negli Stati Uniti: teoria e prassi
This dissertation aims to analyse the development of the deliberative model of democracy in the U.S., both in an empirical and theoretical levels, from its origins in the eighties of the last century until now.
In the first part we study the political and historical elements that build the crisis of the Liberal political system in the seventies in the U.S. and its effects on the political behaviour of citizens.
In the second part we discuss the origins and development of the deliberative theory of democracy, its main authors, approaches and elements. The key aspect of this model of democracy is to reverse the apathy and strength the political participation of citizens through public deliberation.
In the last part we expose the practical level of the deliberative democracy: how this theory of has been put into practice in the American political domain. We describe the main projects of deliberative democracy rose from civil society from the eighties until today. Finally, we expose the James Fishkin’s proposal of deliberative poll. This is the link between the empirical and theoretical levels of the deliberative model of democracy
Integrated approaches for tailoring risk assessment in potential or confirmed BRCA1/2 variant carriers
Background
Prompt and proper identification of germline BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) is essential to inform clinical decisions in breast cancer/ovarian cancer (BC/OC) patients and their families.
Aim
To improve identification and risk assessment of germline BRCA1/2 PV carriers.
Materials and Methods
Study_1: The recent ClinGen ENIGMA BRCA1/2 classification criteria were systematically applied to all the BRCA1/2 variants of uncertain significance (VUS) identified in our laboratory.
Study_2: Pathogenicity and associated penetrance of the Italian founder BRCA1:c.5017_5019del(p.His1673del) variant were assessed by combining data from 72 Italian carrier families and additional sources.
Study_3: Clinical-pathological features of OC patients associated with germline BRCA1/2 PVs were identified through a systematic literature review with meta-analysis and analyzed using logistic regression models and machine learning approaches in a series of 1009 OC patients to develop a risk score.
Results
Study_1: 135 out of 166 (81.3%) VUS detected in 231 index cases were re-classified: 128 (94.8%) as Benign/Likely Benign and 7 (5.2%) as Pathogenic/Likely Pathogenic.
Study_2: BRCA1:c.5017_5019del(p.His1673del) variant carriers displayed significantly increased risk for OC (HR = 33.0, 95%) and uterine cancer (HR = 8.0), but not for BC (HR = 0.7). The variant was classified as Pathogenic for different types of evidence.
Study_3: The systematic literature review with meta-analysis and the analysis of our OC cohort showed that histotype, family history of BC/OC, previous BC and age at diagnosis are independently and significantly associated with BRCA1/2 status. ORs derived from multivariable logistic regression calibrated according to machine learning analyses results were used to assign weights from 1 to 3 to each feature, developing a score ranging from 0 to 10 associated with increasing risk of BRCA1/2 PVs (score 0 =0.6%; score ≥7 =88%).
Conclusions
These results are relevant for a significant number of patients and families and could make their clinical management more precise and effective
Cardiac amyloidosis: hemodynamic profile and prognostic implications
Background: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a hypertrophic phenotype cardiomyopathy characterized by a clinical presentation predominantly defined by heart failure. This study evaluates the invasive hemodynamic characteristics and their prognostic implications in consecutive patients diagnosed with CA (in its three main etiologies: light chain amyloidosis AL, transthyretin variant amyloidosis ATTRv, and transthyretin wild-type amyloidosis ATTRwt) who underwent RHC at IRCCS S. Orsola Hospital in Bologna between 1992 and December 2023.
Results: A total of 274 patients were enrolled (121 [44.2%] AL, 66 [24.1%] ATTRv, and 87 [31.7%] ATTRwt). At baseline, the hemodynamic profile was characterized by elevated biventricular filling pressures and pulmonary hypertension, with a median mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) of 24 mmHg [IQR: 18–30], predominantly post-capillary or combined pre- and post-capillary. The stroke volume index (SVi) was reduced, with a median of 30 mL/m² [IQR: 24–37], and the cardiac index (CI) was at the lower limit of normality, with a median of 2.4 L/min/m² [IQR: 1.9–2.8]. Patients with advanced NYHA class at presentation (III/IV) presented a more severe echocardiographic and hemodynamic profile. Invasive hemodynamic parameters showed a good correlation with echocardiographic measurements. During a median follow-up of 30 months, 159 deaths were recorded. Classic cut-offs for RAP, PCWP, mPAP, and SVi emerged as predictors of mortality in Kaplan-Meier curves. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, independent predictors of overall mortality included age at diagnosis, AL etiology, advanced NYHA functional class at presentation (III/IV), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), RAP, and SVi.
Conclusions: The hemodynamic profile of patients with cardiac amyloidosis is characterized by concomitant systolic and diastolic dysfunction, elevated biventricular filling pressures, and reduced SVi. Both RAP and SVi are independently associated with mortality in this population
The dark and bright side of remote work: social isolation, concentration, and performance of remote workers
This dissertation, comprised of three separate studies, focuses on the relationship between remote work adoption and employee job performance, analyzing employee social isolation and job concentration as the main mediators of this relationship. It also examines the impact of concern about COVID-19 and emotional stability as moderators of these relationships. Using a survey-based method in an emergency homeworking context, the first study found that social isolation had a negative effect on remote work productivity and satisfaction, and that COVID-19 concerns affected this relationship differently for individuals with high and low levels of concern. The second study, a diary study analyzing hybrid workers, found a positive correlation between work from home (WFH) adoption and job performance through social isolation and job concentration, with emotional stability serving respectively as a buffer and booster in the relationships between WFH and the mediators. The third study, even in this case a diary study of hybrid workers, confirmed the benefits of work from home on job performance and the importance of job concentration as a mediator, while suggesting that social isolation may not be significant when studying employee job performance, but it is relevant for employee well-being.
