Analysis of technological accidents triggered by natural events (Natech) in the perspective of climate change

    No full text
The severe accidents deriving from the impact of natural events on industrial installations have become a matter of growing concern in the last decades. In the literature, these events are typically referred to as Natech accidents. Several peculiarities distinguish them from conventional industrial accidents caused by internal factors, such as the possible occurrence of multiple simultaneous failures, and the enhanced probability of cascading events. The research project provides a comprehensive overview of Natech accidents that occurred in the Chemical and Process Industry, allowing for the identification of relevant aspects of Natech events. Quantified event trees and probability of ignition are derived from the collected dataset, providing a step forward in the quantitative risk assessment of Natech accidents. The investigation of past Natech accidents also demonstrated that wildfires may cause technological accidents. Climate change and global warming are promoting the conditions for wildfire development and rapid spread. Hence, ensuring the safety of industrial facilities exposed to wildfires is paramount. This was achieved defining safety distances between wildland vegetation and industrial equipment items. In addition, an innovative methodology for the vulnerability assessment of Natech and Domino scenarios triggered by wildfires was developed. The approach accounted for the dynamic behaviour of wildfire events and related technological scenarios. Besides, the performance of the emergency response and the related intervention time in the case of cascading events caused by natural events were evaluated. Overall, the tools presented in this thesis represent a step forward in the Quantitative Risk Assessment of Natech accidents. The methodologies developed also provide a solid basis for the definition of effective strategies for risk mitigation and reduction. These aspects are crucial to improve the resilience of industrial plants to natural hazards, especially considering the effects that climate change may have on the severity of such events

Wireless solutions for the industrial internet of things

    No full text
The fourth industrial revolution is paving the way for Industrial Internet of Things applications where industrial assets (e.g., robotic arms, valves, pistons) are equipped with a large number of wireless devices (i.e., microcontroller boards that embed sensors and actuators) to enable a plethora of new applications, such as analytics, diagnostics, monitoring, as well as supervisory, and safety control use-cases. Nevertheless, current wireless technologies, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and even private 5G networks, cannot fulfill all the requirements set up by the Industry 4.0 paradigm, thus opening up new 6G-oriented research trends, such as the use of THz frequencies. In light of the above, this thesis provides (i) a broad overview of the main use-cases, requirements, and key enabling wireless technologies foreseen by the fourth industrial revolution, and (ii) proposes innovative contributions, both theoretical and empirical, to enhance the performance of current and future wireless technologies at different levels of the protocol stack. In particular, at the physical layer, signal processing techniques are being exploited to analyze two multiplexing schemes, namely Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Chirp Division Multiplexing, which seem promising for high-frequency wireless communications. At the medium access layer, three protocols for intra-machine communications are proposed, where one is based on LoRa at 2.4 GHz and the others work in the THz band. Different scheduling algorithms for private industrial 5G networks are compared, and two main proposals are described, i.e., a decentralized scheme that leverages machine learning techniques to better address aperiodic traffic patterns, and a centralized contention-based design that serves a federated learning industrial application. Results are provided in terms of numerical evaluations, simulation results, and real-world experiments. Several improvements over the state-of-the-art were obtained, and the description of up-and-running testbeds demonstrates the feasibility of some of the theoretical concepts when considering a real industry plant

Microwave and millimeter-wave spectroscopy of sulfur-containing molecules

The rotational spectroscopy of several sulfur bearing molecules and their 1:1 water complex, cysteamine, cysteamine monohydrate, 1-thioglycerol and 1-propanethiol were studied in the micro-wave and (or) millimeter-wave range. Precise laboratory spectra and conformational information were obtained. For cysteamine, the conformational space (at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/Def2-TZVP level) and the measurement and analysis of its rotational spectra in the 6 - 18 and 59.6 - 120 GHz are reported. The hyperfine structure of the rotational spectra was observed and analyzed for the first time. Based on the measured spectra, a search of the different conformers of cysteamine was performed toward the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud. We computed the upper limit of the ratio of ethanolamine to cysteamine, which is >0.8−5.3. For the cysteamine monohydrate, the conformational space was explored (at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/Def2-TZVP level). The rotational spectra of the cysteamine monohydrate complex have been assigned in the frequency range 6 – 18.5 GHz. The global minimum, Conf A1, was the only observed one. The 34S isotopologue of Conf A1 was observed in natural abundance, while 18O isotopologue was detected by introducing the H218O. In this conformer, the water molecule plays both proton donor and acceptor roles, forming a OHw···N interaction, a SH···Ow interaction and a CH···Ow interaction. The conformational space of 1-thioglycerol has been characterized by quantum mechanical calculation and its rotational spectrum has been recorded and analyzed in the frequency range 59.6 - 78.4 GHz. The global minimum of 1-thioglycerol is gTg’Gg’ and were detected together with gTg’Tg and gGgG’g, while the two detected conformers are g’G’gGg’ and tGgGg. The high-resolution rotational spectrum of 1-propanethiol in the frequency range 59.6 – 78.4 GHz was measured. Two conformers, Gg and Tg, were observed and their spectra were analyzed. Considering the overall conformational space calculated at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/Def2-TZVP level they are among the lowest energy conformers

Contaminants of emerging concern in drinking water: assessment of the effectiveness of removal by drinking water treatments and possible risks to human health

    No full text
Contaminants of emerging concern are increasingly detected in the water cycle, with endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) receiving attention due to their potential to cause adverse health effects even at low concentrations. Although the EU has recently introduced some EDCs into drinking water legislation, most drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) are not designed to remove EDCs, making their detection and removal in DWTPs an important challenge. The aim of this doctoral project was to investigate hormones and phenolic compounds as suspected EDCs in drinking waters across the Romagna area (Italy). The main objectives were to assess the occurrence of considered contaminants in source and drinking water from three DWTPs, characterize the effectiveness of removal by different water treatment processes, and evaluate the potential biological impact on drinking water and human health. Specifically, a complementary approach of target chemical analysis and effect-based methods was adopted to explore drinking water quality, treatment efficacy, and biological potential. This study found that nonylphenol (NP) was prevalent in all samples, followed by BPA. Sporadic contamination of hormones was found only in source waters. Although the measured EDC concentrations in drinking water did not exceed threshold guideline values, the potential role of DWTPs as an additional source of EDC contamination should be considered. Significant increases in BPA and NP levels were observed during water treatment steps, which were also reflected in estrogenic and mutagenic responses in water samples after the ultrafiltration. This highlights the need to monitor water quality during various treatment processes to improve the efficiency of DWTPs. Biological assessments on finished water did not reveal any bioactivity, except for few treated water samples that exhibited estrogenic responses. Overall, the data emphasize the high quality of produced drinking water and the value of applying integrated chemical analysis and in vitro bioassays for water quality assessment

The present dissertation aims to identify a method for communicating epigraphic finds exhibited in museums that transcends the frontal teaching model and considers the multi-semantic nature of inscriptions. The fieldwork was carried out in the roman lapidarium sections of the Musei Civici of Reggio Emilia and the Museo Civico Archeologico of Bologna. In the first of the two museums, it was developed a survey of the epigraphic heritage and then were designed supporting tools to facilitate the visit of the lapidarium. In the second case, the Bologna Museum, it was held a research on a group of inscriptions found in an archaeological context of reuse (the so-called Muro del Reno) which permitted the fulfillment of a narrative-type texts’ project of the epigraphic collection

Aberrant c-MET activation impairs perinuclear actin cap organization with YAP1 cytosolic relocation

Growing evidence indicates that cell and nuclear deformability plays a crucial role in the determination of cancer cells tumorigenic and metastatic potential. The perinuclear actin cap, by wrapping the nucleus with a functional network of actomyosin cables, can modulate nuclear architecture and consequently cell/nuclear elasticity. The hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET) stands out among other membrane receptors as crucial player of the actin filaments organization, but no data are available on a specific role for MET in the actin cap assembly and the overall nuclear architecture organization. In a cell system characterized by MET hyperactivation, we observed a strong rearrangement of the cellular actin caps, with a complete dismantling of apical stress fibers and a strikingly enhanced nuclear height. CRISPR/Cas9 silencing of MET completely reverted the aberrant phenotype, resulting in flattened cells with perfectly aligned perinuclear actomyosin bundles, as well as decreased MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling, cell proliferation rate and aggressiveness. Interestingly, MET ablated cells acquired a remarkably directed and polarized migratory phenotype, contrarily to cells with MET sustained activation showing meandering random walk. A pathway enrichment analysis comparing MET-activated and MET-KO cells RNAseq data, unveiled the contribution of multiple pathways associated with cytoskeleton remodeling, regulation of cell shape and response to mechanical stimuli. In line, the co-transcriptional activator YAP1, playing a major role in cell mechanosensing and focal adhesions/actin stabilization, appeared the culprit of the genetic reassembling of KO cells. Indeed, MET silencing was shown to induce YAP1 nuclear shuttling and increased co-transcriptional activity. Finally, we were able to induce in a normal epithelial model a phenotype closer to MET activated cancer cells only by introducing a constitutive fusion protein of MET. Taken together, our results demonstrate a new mechanism of MET-mediated actin remodeling responsible for a tumor-initiating capacity and meandering random migration, which requires YAP1 inactivation

Framing climate change: a planetary health perspective on the pediatric age

    No full text
This thesis analyzes an analysis of the risk perception of Italian paediatricians and parents regarding the impact of climate change on pediatric health. The consequences of climate change are now before our eyes; the recent pandemic has highlighted the impact that the destruction of ecosystems and global warming can have on our health. Fragile subjects will pay the most for the consequences of this crisis: children, the elderly, pregnant women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 88% of the disease burden linked to climate change falls on children under the age of 5. Climate change poses a challenge of equity not only between different areas of the world but also between generations: the worst consequences will weigh on those who have not caused damage to the ecosystem. This study began by studying the risk perceptions of the two main caregivers who deal with the child's health: parents and paediatricians. The study analyzed a mixed methods approach, exploiting quantitative and qualitative approaches. Two surveys were carried out in collaboration with the Italian Society of Pediatrics (SIP) and AGE, the Italian Parents' Association, using a tool already consolidated in the literature and adapted according to the needs of the thesis. Sixty semi-structured interviews were then conducted with pediatricians of different age groups and different regions of Italy. The collected data were then compared with the literature on the subject, in order to understand differences and similarities. This work is part of a still rather scarce, but growing, field of literature and represents the first study of this type in Italy

Effects of allelopathic compounds produced by native and invasive marine macroalgae on the associated communities

    No full text
In this study, the production of bioactive secondary metabolites called "allelochemicals" by algae has been investigated, specifically focusing on polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs). PUAs are known to have adverse effects on planktonic grazers and on phytoplankton; however, their effect on benthic communities has been poorly studied. Macroalgae are ecosystem engineers that play an important role in the structure of the habitat and associated communities, presenting a great variability in their morphology and structural complexity, which is a primary factor in the structuring of associated communities. In recent decades, it has been seen how the introduction of invasive species can modify the benthic habitat structure, causing cascading effects on the trophic chain. The thesis includes several field and laboratory studies. Field studies examined aldehyde production by native and invasive macroalgal species (Sargassum muticum, in the Adriatic Sea, and Rugulopterix okamurae in the Strait of Gibraltar), their structural complexity, together with their associated phyto and meiobenthos. Two laboratory studies were conducted. The first one, based on microcosms experiments, evaluated the effect of PUA (produced by the diatom Skeletonema marinoi, or as decadienal analytical standard) on meiofauna. The second one evaluated the inhibitory effect of dilkamural, an allelopathic compound isolated from R. okamurae, on unicellular phototrophs. Our results showed that PUAs produced by macroalgae were species-specific and had a significant impact on the benthic community. The morphology of macroalgae was an important factor in shaping associated communities, particularly for microphytobenthos. Invasive species, such as S. muticum and R. okamurae, could reduce the biodiversity of native benthic communities and simplify the habitat. Dilkamural was hypothesized to be an allelochemical defense, and laboratory toxicity tests confirmed this hypothesis. Overall, this thesis sheds light on the importance of allelochemicals and macroalgal structural complexity in the benthic environment and highlights the potential impact of invasive species

Novel functionalized calcium phosphates: structures, morphologies and potential applications.

    No full text
The stable increase in average life expectancy and the consecutive increase in the number of cases of bone related diseases has led to a growing interest in the development of materials that can promote bone repair and/or replacement. Among the best candidates are those materials that have a high similarity to bones, in terms of composition, structure, morphology and functionality. Biomineralized tissue, and thus also bones, have three main components: water, an organic matrix and an inorganic deposit. In vertebrates, the inorganic deposit consists of what is called biological apatite, which slightly differ from stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HA) both in crystallographic terms and in the presence of foreign atoms and species. This justifies the great attention towards calcium phosphates, which show excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. The performances of the material and the response of the biological tissue can be further improved through their functionalization with ions, biologically active molecules and nanostructures. This thesis focuses on several possible functionalizations of calcium phosphates, and their effects on chemical properties and biological performances. In particular, the functionalizing agents include several biologically relevant ions, such as Cobalt (Co), Manganese (Mn), Strontium (Sr) and Zinc (Zn); two organic molecules, a flavonoid (Quercetin) and a polyphenol (Curcumin); and nanoparticles, namely tungsten oxide (WO3) NPs. Functionalization was carried out on various calcium phosphates: dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) and hydroxyapatite (HA). Two different strategies of functionalization were applied: direct synthesis and adsorption from solution. Finally, a chapter is devoted to a preliminary study on the development of cements based on some of the functionalized phosphates obtained
