«Norma a' piu famosi compositori di sonate a solo».
In recent decades the figure and music of Carlo Ambrogio Lonati (c.1645-post 1701) has increasingly prompted the interest of scholars and performers, both of whom have taken individual aspects of his life and music into consideration. However, the process of rediscovery has been hampered by the lack of a comprehensive and integrated investigation. This dissertation aims at filling this gap, while proposing a reconsideration of Lonati in light of his violin music. For this purpose, a circular approach has been employed. While the compositions for violin offer a privileged channel for studying the artistic career and music, revisiting Lonati’s biography allows the sonatas to be seen in a broad and multifaceted context, beyond the distinctions between genres. This perspective makes it possible to correct several bibliographic inaccuracies while the integration of different methodological approaches offer a completely new understanding of the composer, and of his violin music.
A scrupulous codicological and philological study includes four printed sources and nineteen manuscripts, which allow me to locate and study new pieces and to deeply reconsider some compositions that were already identified. The thirty-one sonatas have been categorized into certain, attributable, and doubtful compositions, and they have been scrutinized through various interpretative and analytical perspectives, thus allowing me to show several dissimilarities concerning tradition and textual status, style, form, and compositional writing. The diversified framework that they describe allows for a transversal approach to the European violin and instrumental repertoire of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and addresses issues of authorship, the "Work-concept" and the problems of attribution, creativity, and style. A critical edition of the nineteen unpublished violin sonatas allows scholars and performers to approach this repertoire, while an inventory of all known compositions currently attributed to Lonati provides a basis for future studies
The integration of immigrant-origin youths in Japan
The steadily growing immigration phenomenon in today’s Japan is showing a tangible and expanding presence of immigrant-origin youths residing in the country. International research in the migration studies area has underlined the importance of focusing on immigrant-origin youths to shed light on the character of the way immigrant incorporate in countries of destinations. In-deed, immigrants’ offspring, the adults of tomorrow, embody the interlocutor between first-generation immigrants and the receiving societal context. The extent of the presence of immigrants’ children in countries of destination is also a reliable yardstick to assess the maturation of the migration process, transforming it from a temporary phenomenon to a long-term settlement. Within this framework, the school is a privileged site to observe and analyze immigrant-origin youths’ integration. Alongside their family and peers, school constitutes one of the main agents of socialization. Here, children learn norms and rules and acquire the necessary tools to eventually compete in the pursuit of an occupation, determining their future socioeconomic standing. This doctoral research aims to identify which theoretical model articulated in the area of migration studies best describes the adaptation process of immigrant-origin youths in Japan. In particular, it examines whether (and to what extent) any of the pre-existing frameworks can help explain the Japanese occurring circumstances, or whether further elaboration and adjustment are needed. Alternatively, it studies whether it is necessary to produce a new model based on the peculiarities of the Japanese social context. This study provides a theoretical-oriented contribution to the (mainly descriptive but maturing) literature on immigrant-origin youths’ integration in Japan. Considering past growth trends of Japanese immigration and its expanding prospective projections (Korekawa 2018c), this study might be considered pioneering for future development of the phenomenon
The Italian fiction of the 2000s - between postmodernity and hypermodernity
In the last fifteen years the Italian literary debate has specifically revolved around the persistence of Italian postmodernism features in the national literary production and, simultaneously, around the research of signs that can prove the overcoming of this historical and literary era. The literary critics have taken very different stances on the topic and are therefore still divided: on one side we find the advocates of a certain restoration of both realist and modernist features; on the other we find those who consider postmodernism to have evolved in a more mature form.
In this work, on the basis of Luperini, Donnarumma e Cortellessa, we are going to consider postmodern as a concluded artistic and historical phase. The most representative and recognizable key themes of the new Italian literary production will be investigated through the work of four authors that - above others - have shown a shared sensitivity and similar problematic elements: Giorgio Falco, Nicola Lagioia, Laura Pugno, Giorgio Vasta.
In the first section we have observed the presence of corporeality in some of these authors’ works, with the aim of verifying the modality of return to the physical dimension of existence. In the second part we have investigated the return to commitment through the observation of the Seventies and Eighties and an overview of the Northern Italy urban sprawl.
The present work aims to investigate the potential use of natural substances against bacterial plant pathogens. Microdilution tests were therefore carried out in vitro to identify the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC and MBC) of several EOs and Hys against selected bacterial pathogens. Commercial products based on a mixture of EOs were in addition assayed with macrodilution experiments against Erwinia amylovora (Ea-causal agent of fire blight). Subsequently, using selected EOs, Hys, and commercial products, ex vivo tests on disease incidence and Ea population dynamics were carried out; the latter experiment was followed by SEM observations. In addition, in vivo resistance induction test was carried out against bacterial leaf of tomato, caused by Xanthomonas vesicatoria (Xv). EOs and Hys showed high bactericidal activity in vitro (MBC 40%). Differently, commercial products resulted active in all tests, but not as resistance inducers against Xv. An open field trial with commercial products was carried out on strawberry plants naturally infected with Xanthomonas fragariae; the results showed discrete relative protection, concerning that provided by the conventional products based on copper; mostly, the disease severity reduction on those plants treated with EOs commercial products was significant when disease severity resulted high. The papers already published described in the present work investigate (1)the activity of Hys in comparison to EOs with respect to their active volatile content; (2) the potential use of EOs and Hys in cultural heritage; for the restoration of paintings; (3) the induction of resistance caused by plasma-activated water-based root treatments
Multi-phase electric drives for mobility
Multi-phase electrical drives are potential candidates for the employment in innovative electric vehicle
powertrains, in response to the request for high efficiency and reliability of this type of application.
In addition to the multi-phase technology, in the last decades also, multilevel technology has been
developed. These two technologies are somewhat complementary since both allow increasing the power
rating of the system without increasing the current and voltage ratings of the single power switches of the
inverter.
In this thesis, some different topics concerning the inverter, the motor and the fault diagnosis of an electric
vehicle powertrain are addressed. In particular, the attention is focused on multi-phase and multilevel
technologies and their potential advantages with respect to traditional technologies.
First of all, the mathematical models of two multi-phase machines, a five-phase induction machine and an
asymmetrical six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines are developed using the Vector Space
Decomposition approach.
Then, a new modulation technique for multi-phase multilevel T-type inverters, which solves the voltage
balancing problem of the DC-link capacitors, ensuring flexible management of the capacitor voltages, is
developed. The technique is based on the proper selection of the zero-sequence component of the
modulating signals.
Subsequently, a diagnostic technique for detecting the state of health of the rotor magnets in a six-phase
permanent magnet synchronous machine is established. The technique is based on analysing the
electromotive force induced in the stator windings by the rotor magnets.
Furthermore, an innovative algorithm able to extend the linear modulation region for five-phase inverters,
taking advantage of the multiple degrees of freedom available in multi-phase systems is presented.
Finally, the mathematical model of an eighteen-phase squirrel cage induction motor is defined. This activity
aims to develop a motor drive able to change the number of poles of the machine during the machine
operation
Towards a broader understanding of the effects of tidal forcing on the global ocean circulation
The study of tides and their interactions with the complex dynamics of the global ocean represents a crucial challenge in ocean modelling. This thesis aims to deepen this study from a dynamical point of view, analysing what are the tidal effects on the general circulation of the ocean. We perform different experiments of a mesoscale-permitting global ocean model forced by both atmospheric fields and astronomical tidal potential, and we implement two parametrizations to include in the model tidal phenomena that are currently unresolved, with particular emphasis to the topographic wave drag for locally dissipating internal waves.
An additional experiment using a mesoscale-resolving configuration is used to compare the simulated tides at different resolutions with observed data. We find that the accuracy of modelled tides strongly depends on the region and harmonic component of interest, even though the increased resolution allows to improve the modelled topography and resolve more intense internal waves.
We then focus on the impact of tides in the Atlantic Ocean and find that tides weaken the overturning circulation during the analysed period from 1981 to 2007, even though the interannual differences strongly change in both amplitude and phase. The zonally integrated momentum balance shows that tide changes the water stratification at the zonal boundaries, modifying the pressure and therefore the geostrophic balance over the entire basin.
Finally, we describe the overturning circulation in the Mediterranean Sea computing the meridional
and zonal streamfunctions both in the Eulerian and residual frameworks. The circulation is characterised by different cells, and their forcing processes are described with particular emphasis to the role of mesoscale and a transient climatic event. We complete the description of the overturning circulation giving evidence for the first time to the connection between meridional and zonal cells
Price manipulation: theoretical models and empirical investigation
Understanding why market manipulation is conducted, under which conditions it is the most profitable and investigating the magnitude of these practices are crucial questions for financial regulators. Closing price manipulation induced by derivatives’ expiration is the primary subject of this thesis. The first chapter provides a mathematical framework in continuous time to study the incentive to manipulate a set of securities induced by a derivative position. An agent holding a European-type contingent claim, depending on the price of a basket of underlying securities, is considered. The agent can affect the price of the underlying securities by trading on each of them before expiration. The elements of novelty are at least twofold: (1) a multi-asset market is considered; (2) the problem is solved by means of both classic optimisation and stochastic control techniques. Both linear and option payoffs are considered. In the second chapter an empirical investigation is conducted on the existence of expiration day effects on the UK equity market. Intraday data on FTSE 350 stocks over a six-year period from 2015-2020 are used. The results show that the expiration of index derivatives is associated with a rise in both trading activity and volatility, together with significant price distortions. The expiration of single stock options appears to have little to no impact on the underlying securities. The last chapter examines the existence of patterns in line with closing price manipulation of UK stocks on option expiration days. The main contributions are threefold: (1) this is one of the few empirical studies on manipulation induced by the options market; (2) proprietary equity orderbook and transaction data sets are used to define manipulation proxies, providing a more detailed analysis; (3) the behaviour of proprietary trading firms is studied. Despite the industry concerns, no evidence is found of this type of manipulative behaviour
Electrochemiluminescence: insights into the mechanisms and nanomaterial-based applications
Biomarkers are biological indicators of human health conditions. Their ultra-sensitive quantification is of paramount importance in clinical monitoring and early disease diagnosis. Biosensors are simple and easy-to-use analytical devices and, in their world, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is one of the most promising analytical techniques that needs an ever-increasing sensitivity for improving its clinical effectiveness.
Scope of this project was the investigation of the ECL generation mechanisms for enhancing the ECL intensity also through the identification of suitable nanostructures. The combination of nanotechnologies, microscopy and ECL has proved to be a very successful strategy to improve the analytical efficiency of ECL in one of its most promising bioanalytical approaches, the bead-based immunoassay. Nanosystems, such as [Ru(bpy)3]2+-dye-doped nanoparticles (DDSNPs) and Bodipy Carbon Nanodots, have been used to improve the sensitivity of ECL techniques thanks to their advantageous and tuneable properties, reaching a signal increase of 750% in DDSNPs-bead-based immunoassay system.
In this thesis, an investigation of size and distance effects on the ECL mechanisms was carried out through the innovative combination of ECL microscopy and electrochemical mapping of radicals. It allowed the discovery of an unexpected and highly efficient mechanistic path for ECL generation at small distances from the electrode surface. It was exploited and enhanced through the addition of a branched amine DPIBA to the usual coreactant TPrA solution for enhancing the ECL efficiency until a maximum of 128%.
Finally, a beads-based immunoassay and an immunosensor specific for cardiac Troponin I were built exploiting previous results and carbon nanotubes features. They created a conductive layer around beads enhancing the signal by 70% and activating an ECL mechanism unobserved before in such systems.
In conclusion, the combination of ECL microscopy and nanotechnology and the deep understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the ECL emission led to a great enhancement in the signal
New perspectives of genetic disorders in cattle
In the last decades a negative trend in inbreeding has accompanied the evident improvement in productivity and performance of bovine domestic population, predisposing to the occurrence of recessively inherited disorders.
The objectives of this thesis were:
a) the study of genetic diseases applying a “forward genetic approach” (FGA);
b) the estimation of the prevalence of deleterious alleles responsible for eight recessive disorders in different breeds;
c) the collection of well-characterized materials in a Biobank for Bovine Genetic Disorders.
The FGA allowed the identification of seven new recessive deleterious variants (Paunch calf syndrome - KDM2B; Congenital cholesterol deficiency - APOB; Ichthyosis congenita - FA2H; Hypotrichosis - KRT71; Hypotrichosis - HEPHL1; Achromatopsia - CNGB3; Hemifacial microsomia – LAMB1) and of seven new de novo dominant deleterious variants (Achondrogenesis type II - two variants in COL2A1; Osteogenesis imperfecta - COL1A1; Skeletal-cardio-enteric dysplasia - MAP2K2; Congenital neuromuscular channelopathy - KGNG1; Epidermolysis bullosa simplex - KRT5; Classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - COL5A2) in different breeds, associated with a large spectrum of phenotypes affecting different systems.
The FGA was based on the sequence of a clinical, genealogical, gross- and/or histopathological and genomic study. In particular, a WGS trio-approach (patient, dam and sire) was applied.
The prevalence of deleterious alleles was calculated for the Pseudomyotonia congenita, Paunch calf syndrome, Hemifacial microsomia, Congenital bilateral cataract, Ichthyosis congenita, Ichthyosis fetalis, Achromatopsia and Hypotrichosis. A particular concern resulted the allelic frequency of 12% for the Paunch calf syndrome in Romagnola cattle.
In respect to the Biobank for Bovine Genetic Diseases, biological materials of clinical cases and their available relatives as well as controls used for the allelic frequency estimations were stored at -20 °C. Altogether, around 16.000 samples were added to the biobank
Unveiling the unknown of cool stars with high-resolution spectroscopy
Cool giant and supergiant stars are among the brightest populations in any stellar system and they are easily observable out to large distances, especially at infrared wavelengths. These stars also dominate the integrated light of star clusters in a wide range of ages, making them powerful tracers of stellar populations in more distant galaxies.
High-resolution near-IR spectroscopy is a key tool for quantitatively investigating their kinematic, evolutionary and chemical properties. However, the systematic exploration and calibration of the NIR spectral diagnostics to study these cool stellar populations based on high-resolution spectroscopy is still in its pioneering stage. Any effort to make progress in the field is innovative and of impact on stellar archaeology and stellar evolution.
This PhD project takes the challenge of exploring that new parameter space and characterizing the physical properties, the chemical content and the kinematics of cool giants and supergiants in selected disc fields and clusters of our Galaxy, with the ultimate goal of tracing their past and recent star formation and chemical enrichment history. By using optical HARPS-N and near-infrared GIANO-B high-resolution stellar spectra in the context of the large program SPA-Stellar Population Astrophysics: the detailed, age-resolved chemistry of the Milky Way disk” (PI L. Origlia), an extensive study of Arcturus, a standard calibrator for red giant stars, has been performed. New diagnostics of stellar parameters as well as optimal linelists for chemical analysis have been provided.
Then, such diagnostics have been used to determine evolutionary properties, detailed chemical abundances of almost 30 different elements and mixing processes of a homogeneous sample of red supergiant stars in the Perseus complex
