Crip guts, stomas, and the violence of ‘returning to normal’: a feminist queer crip approach to the gut
What is a feminist queer crip approach to the gut? How might we use feminist queer crip theory to make sense of non-normative guts? And how might crip guts help us make sense of the world? This paper is an autoethnographic reflection on my crip guts, specifically being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC), a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and having a colectomy (surgery to remove my colon) to create an ileostomy (a type of stoma). I consider the epistemic complexities of being both patient and researcher and the importance of acknowledging multiple forms of expertise, putting my autoethnographic reflections into conversation with a variety of texts. I argue that my crip guts provide an embodied, if stigmatised, form of knowledge that complicates academic/lived experience and body/mind divisions, alongside necessitating more holistic responses to crip guts beyond individualising biomedical models. I examine the violence of discourses of normality around bodily difference and the complex temporalities of the gut through a focus three key moments in my crip gut experience – late diagnosis and (not) being believed; stoma representation and stigmatised imagined futures; and, the gut remembering colonial pasts – before arguing for queer stoma pride as a destigmatised collective refusal of normative gut discourse and valuation of crip gut knowing

A new normative underpinning for sport policy research: Advancing the field through thinking with political philosophy theory
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate significant advances in sport policy research that derive from a paradigm shifting engagement with theories from the political philosophy discipline. Initially, the article establishes that there is an unaddressed gap between the normative orientation of sport policies themselves and the significant absence of attention to normative principles in theoretical and conceptual approaches that predominate in current sport policy research. In contrast, political philosophy theories do proceed from particular normative values to present comprehensive accounts of the forms that policies and governing institutions should take. To exemplify how such theories can benefit sport policy research, the article considers Joseph Raz’s (1986) liberal theorisation of the ‘Morality of Freedom’ and applies its connected components in interrogating a contemporary set of sport policy documents from the United Kingdom. This novel approach of ‘thinking with’ Raz’s normative account enables identification of how political philosophy theories can advance sport policy research by: (i) providing overarching normative principles by which different goals and means incorporated across sport policies may be commonly appraised; (ii) enabling fine-grained consideration of the coherence (or otherwise) of different aspects of sport policies; and (iii) offering new possibilities for considering the scope of governmental intervention and the distribution of resources associated with sport policies. Additionally, it is recognised that political philosophy theories also offer new approaches to consider global and international sport policies and provide a basis for rich argumentation as to how sport policies may be differently orientated into the future
A systematic review of the association between women’s morphological traits and fertility
Typically feminine morphological traits in women include a neotenous facial structure with large eyes, full lips, and an oval face shape, and a curvaceous body with large breasts, a narrow waist, and full hips and buttocks. Compared to men, women also show higher second-to-fourth finger (2D:4D) ratios as well as less muscle mass, lower physical strength, and a higher voice pitch. Due to a putative association with oestrogen levels, feminine traits are often claimed to cue women’s reproductive potential. However, the evidence for this is scarce and inconsistent, typically measuring proxies rather than actual fertility outcomes. Here, we report a systematic review of direct fertility measures as a function of morphological traits in women, including breast size, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), voice pitch, strength, and 2D:4D; no articles were found measuring facial femininity. The review included 19 articles comprising 68 effect sizes (31 samples from 16 countries; total N = 125,062). Our review showed that a less feminine WHR may cue past fertility, and a more feminine 2D:4D may be, at best, weakly associated with fertility. Overall, we conclude that the current evidence base is too weak to support the claim that women’s feminine morphological traits are associated with reproductive potential
Photophysical studies on meta - and para -carboranes containing 1-naphthyl groups
Four new carboranes, C-(1-naphthyl)-meta-, C,C‘-bis(1-naphthyl)-meta-, C-(1-naphthyl)-para- and C,C‘-bis(1-naphthyl)-para-carborane, reveal high-energy emissions at 332–343 nm with quantum yields of 21–38% and long lifetimes of 26–31 ns in degassed cyclohexane solutions. The experimental absorption and emission spectra of the mononaphthyl carboranes are successfully simulated by hybrid DFT vibronic calculations. The computed lowest energy excited state (S1) geometries contain non-planar naphthyl groups due to shorter carborane C–aromatic C bonds and steric effects between the bulky naphthyl and carboranyl units. The high energy emissions are also reproduced in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) films and as solids. The lower energy emissions in 99 : 1 water : THF suspensions for these four compounds at 385–421 nm show quantum yields of 50–64% and long lifetimes of 28–40 ns. The findings indicate that meta- and para-carborane derivatives can generate different solid-state emissions as reported elsewhere for the intensively researched ortho-carborane analogues
Myers-Steenrod theorems for metric and singular Riemannian foliations
We prove that the group of isometries preserving a metric foliation on a closed Alexandrov space is a closed subgroup of the isometry group of . We obtain a sharp upper bound for the dimension of this subgroup and show that, when equality holds, the foliations that realize this upper bound are induced by fiber bundles whose fibers are round spheres or projective spaces. As a corollary, singular Riemannian foliations that realize the upper bound are induced by smooth fiber bundles whose fibers are round spheres or projective spaces
The past and future of the China-US audit oversight dispute: a geopolitical perspective
The China–US audit oversight dispute concerning US-listed Chinese firms has long been an important and difficult issue in international capital markets. Although the Chinese and American authorities signedan agreement in 2022 and started to implement it to solve their audit disputes, there are concerns over whether and how it will continue to function smoothly, particularly due to the changing China–US relations. Drawing on a number of theories relating to institutional bargaining, complex interdependence, and regulatory hybridity, this article tries to first explain the initial success of the 2022 agreement and then discusses worrying signs of tensions between the two sides of the agreement. The functioning of the 2022 agreement will be increasingly affected by geopolitical factors such as weakened regulatory independence and reduced financial interdependence. However, this does not necessarily mean that the agreement will be torn up in the foreseeable future. Rather, this article argues that despite geopolitical tension between China and the USA, there remain opportunities for them to maintain regulatory cooperation on audits of US-listed Chinese companies
The liabilities of robots.txt
This paper explores the legal implications of violating robots.txt, a technical standard widely used by webmasters to communicate restrictions on automated access to website content. Although historically regarded as a voluntary guideline, the rise of generative AI and large-scale web scraping has amplified the consequences of disregarding robots.txt directives. While previous legal discourse has largely focused on criminal or copyright-based remedies, we argue that civil doctrines, particularly in contract and tort law, offer a more balanced and sustainable framework for regulating web robot behavior in common law jurisdictions. Under certain conditions, robots.txt can give rise to a unilateral contract or serve as a form of notice sufficient to establish tortious liability, including trespass to chattels and negligence. Ultimately, we argue that clarifying liability for robots.txt violations is essential to addressing the growing fragmentation of the internet. By restoring balance and accountability in the digital ecosystem, our proposed framework helps preserve the internet’s open and cooperative foundations. Through this lens, robots.txt can remain an equitable and effective tool for digital governance in the age of AI
An Atmospheric History of Smoking in Modern Britain
This book studies the historiography of smoking in modern Britain, with a focus on the social, cultural, and emotional aspects of the practice.Centring on four specific moments in modern British history; the turn of the 20th century, the Second World War, the 1980s, and the mid-2000s,An Atmospheric History of Smokingnot only traces the history of tobacco use, but explores the cultural significance of - and attitudes toward – smoking. Markovic combines oral histories with archival research and artefact analysis, in order to evoke the unique social atmospheres surrounding smoking at each of these key periods within British history.By analysing factors such as the encouragement of the practice as part of Home Front ‘mood management’ during the Second World War, or the impact of smoking on 1980s workplace relations, this book highlights how the role of smoking in public spheres has undergone significant change throughout the 20th century. Constructing the 2007 UK ban on smoking in public places as a turning point for the practice in the British cultural imagination, Markovic examines how smoking has both been deemed ‘out of place’, and yet still persists today
Unevolved Li-rich stars at low metallicity: A possible formation pathway through novae
A small fraction of low-mass stars have been found to have anomalously high Li abundances. Although it has been suggested that mixing during the red giant branch phase can lead to Li production, this method of intrinsic Li production cannot explain Li-rich stars that have not yet undergone the first dredge-up. To obtain clues about the origin of such stars, we present a detailed chemical abundance analysis of four unevolved Li-rich stars with −2.1<[Fe/H]<−1.3 and 2.9<A(Li)<3.6, 0.7−1.4 dex higher Li abundances than the ones of typical unevolved metal-poor stars. One of the stars, Gaia DR3 6334970766103389824 (D25_6334), was serendipitously found in the stellar stream ED-3. The other three stars have been reported to have massive (M≳1.3 M⊙) nonluminous companions. We show that three of the four stars exhibit abundance patterns similar to the ones of known unevolved Li-rich stars, namely normal abundances in most elements except for Li and Na. These abundance similarities suggest a common origin for the unevolved Li-rich stars and low-mass metal-poor stars with massive compact companions. We also made the first detection of N abundance to unevolved Li-rich stars in D25_6334, and found that it is significantly enhanced ([N/Fe] = 1.3). The observed abundance pattern of D25_6334, spanning from C to Si, indicates that its surface has been polluted by a former intermediate-mass companion star or a nova system that involves a massive ONe white dwarf. Using a population synthesis model, we show that the nova scenario can lead to the observed level of Li enhancement and also provide an explanation for Li-rich stars without companions and those with massive compact companions
