    Cutting Time in slices

    During the 18th and 19th centuries, the conquest of deep time emerged as a pivotal achievement when geologists recognized that the age of rocks far exceeded earlier age estimates and exhibited a systematic order of deposition. Geological processes were reframed within an immense temporal framework, prompting efforts to identify and correlate strata worldwide using field-observable discontinuities and lithological traits. As Earth's antiquity became accepted, it also became clear that rock layers preserved records of countless biological and geological events. Biological markers—fossils—offered the most reliable data, but stratigraphers debated whether abrupt changes (catastrophism) or gradual processes (uniformitarianism) should define time slices. They refined biozonation by evaluating species' first and last appearances, ranges, abundance, and geographic distributions. Despite sophisticated biostratigraphic schemes, such subdivisions lacked numerical precision. Only with the discovery of radioactivity and development of radioisotopic dating could geologists assign numerical ages to strata, transforming the geological time scale from a relative framework into one anchored by numerical dates. This breakthrough established a rigid time grid, populated by formally defined periods, epochs, and ages, and with dates geologists could establish the rates of biological and geological processes. Later techniques introduced chemical signatures, magnetic reversal records, and orbital cyclicity as new correlation tools. Today, stratigraphers integrate these diverse markers while continually subdividing intervals to enhance the precision, exactness, and reliability of the Phanerozoic timescale. This multifaceted approach promises even more accurate correlations. By dividing time into thinner intervals and uniting various stratigraphical disciplines, geologists are moving towards a global and finely resolved chronostratigraphic framework

    Jude and the Watchers in the Early Church

    Jude 6 and 2 Pet 2:4 refer to the Watchers myth, which was a widespread interpretation of Gen 6:1–4 in the Second Temple period. This article reinforces that case exegetically in the face of a recent argument that the verses refer instead to a more general sin of angelic blasphemy. It then offers a comprehensive survey of the reception of both verses in patristic writers, which yields two findings. First, no early Christian authors read Jude 6 and 2 Pet 2:4 as referring to blasphemy, whereas some see it as indicating the Watchers myth, adding supporting evidence to the exegetical case. And yet, secondly, many writers (especially after the second century) read these verses without reference to the Watchers myth, demonstrating how they came to be read in a more general sense with relevance for angelology and pneumatology

    Neurodivergence as a Risk Factor for Post-COVID-19 Syndrome

    Objectives: Neurodivergent (ND) individuals (e.g., autistic people) are more likely to experience health problems that are characterised by ‘Central Sensitisation’ (CS). Recent research suggests that a so-called ‘Long-COVID’ syndrome might also be explained by a heightened response to internal physiological stimuli, much like in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The primary objective of this study was to establish whether individuals who scored highly on a measure of CS would be more likely to experience long-term symptoms of COVID-19. A secondary aim considered if having a Type D personality was also linked to ongoing COVID-19 symptoms. Method: Using a standardised assessment tool, we examined whether traits associated with autism would predict long-term COVID-19 symptoms in 267 Healthcare Workers (HCWs). We also used a measure of Type D personality to establish if negative affect and social inhibition were related to Long-COVID. Results: A higher number of autistic traits predicted COVID-19 symptoms that lasted more than 12 weeks regardless of formal autism diagnosis. A personality measure also showed that negative affect was associated with experiencing COVID-19 symptoms for 4–12 weeks, though the direction of causality in this case is uncertain. Conclusions: Our main findings were (i) more HCWs scored above threshold for neurodivergence than those who were self-declared as having been diagnosed as neurodivergent; (ii) while there was no association between long-term COVID-19 and self-declared neurodivergent status, scores for the ‘sensory reactivity’ item of a standardised autism scale was predictive of COVID-19 symptoms lasting beyond 12 weeks post-infection; and (iii) HCWs with Type D Personality were not more likely to experience long-term COVID-19

    We study two-player zero-sum repeated games with incomplete information on one side, where the payoff function is tail measurable (and not necessarily the longrun average payoff). We show that the maxmin value equals the concavification of the value function of the non-revealing game. In addition, we provide an example demonstrating that, under tail-measurable payoffs, the value of the game may fail to exist

    E-XQR-30: evidence for an increase in the ionization state of metal absorbers from z ∼ 6 to z ∼ 2

    We investigate the evolution of the ionization state of metal-enriched gas in and around galaxies near the epoch of reionization using a sample of 488 metal absorption systems at 4.3 6.3 from the E-XQR-30 survey. We classify the absorption systems based on whether they display only low-ionization absorption (C ii, Si ii, Mg ii), only high-ionization absorption (C iv, Si iv), or both. The percentage of low-ionization-only systems decreases from 24 per cent at 6 to 2 per cent at 4.3, whilst the fraction of high-ionization-only systems increases from 52 per cent to 82 per cent. For mixed absorbers (with both low and high ionization absorption), we use the column density ratios log(NC ii/NC iv) and log(NSi ii/NSi iv) to quantify the average ionization as a function of redshift. The log(NSi ii/NSi iv) ratio does not change significantly over 5 6.3. We combine the E-XQR-30 log(NC ii/NC iv) measurements with literature measurements at 2–4 and find that the log(NC ii/NC iv) ratio declines by a factor of 20 between 6 and 2. To explore possible drivers of this evolution, we run photoionization models of gas slabs illuminated by a uniform ultraviolet (UV) background at fixed density, metallicity, and H i column density. We find that the increase in the ionization state of metal absorbers towards lower redshifts can likely be explained by some combination of (1) an increase in the metallicity of C iv-absorbing gas and (2) a decrease in the typical H i column densities of the absorbing gas, driven by the declining cosmic mean density and a rapid rise in the strength of the UV background during the final stages of reionization

    Children's embodiment of non-human virtual hand forms

    Adults are known to identify their own body through a combination of multisensory cues and top-down expectations regarding its form, while children may possess a more flexible body representation. Here we use virtual reality to test how children and adults use form cues to feel ownership over a virtual hand with novel, varying degrees of corporeality and how a sense of ownership of the hand and movement fluency with it may be trained. In Experiment 1, children (N = 40, 6–8 years) and adults (N = 45) experienced four virtual hand forms (Hand, hand with a missing Thumb, crab-like Claw, Cross). Participants had to catch slowly moving virtual feathers while the virtual hand form moved in and out of synchrony with their own hand movements. In Experiment 2, we gave each child (N = 10, 6–9 years) and adult (N = 11) repeated experience with the Claw. Across studies we found that sensations of ownership over the virtual hand were facilitated by human-like forms, movement synchrony, and short-term training. For children only, we also found that human-like forms maintained a strong facilitatory influence even when movement was asynchronous. Further, for children only, training improved movement fluency and increased the sense that the virtual form was a ‘tool' rather than a hand. We suggest that children's top-down expectations regarding their body do not always interact with their multisensory inputs; their experiences are sharpened with training more than adults; and repeated short virtual experiences do not blur children's perceived distinction between the real and virtual self
