Political Activism and the Experience of Adversity
How do political activists who live and work in high-risk contexts experience adversity? How do they make sense of the diverse institutional obstacles, strategic risks, and situational deprivations surrounding their work and lives? This article introduces the notion of relational adversity to capture how different adversarial factors in the diverse arenas activists inhabit intersect with and co-constitute each other. To validate and develop our framework, we analyze 160 narrative accounts of human rights activists in Colombia, Egypt, Kenya and Mexico, and examine concrete configurations and patterns of adversity found among different types of activists. By considering how structural constraints, institutional deficits, and opponent repression connect with the social location of individual activists, routine practices and personal concerns, and with their bodily and cognitive state, the article advances a relational and experiential treatment of political activism that complements structural and strategic approaches and does better justice to the lived reality of contentious mobilization

This article argues that the current way of thinking about ethics in sport in primarily biomedical terms, and in particular in terms of the presence of particular pharmaceutical substances, fails to account for broader notions of sporting ethics and fairness in the global south. Ethnographic material from Ethiopia and Cameroon on attitudes towards doping, ‘spiritual doping’ and age tampering demonstrates that athletes themselves are far more concerned with issues of global inequality and the fair distribution of resources. Current statements on sporting ethics are revealed as at once too narrow (focusing only on individual responsibility and biological factors) and too abstract (without accounting for specific social and economic realities). We extend the notion of ‘athletic citizenship’ to go beyond ‘biological citizenship,’ and argue that the current biomedical model of sporting ethics works to obscure the structural and racialised inequalities that define global sports. Beyond sport, our analysis also demonstrates that the boundaries of citizenship are today often policed through hybridised formations that are not limited to the legal systems of individual countries or to straightforward processes of regulation but which extend to quasi-legal, transnational entities that police specific kinds of bodies

At its core, these laws, while appearing to adhere to a legitimate legal framework, are characterized by their unique normative features. Collectively, they not only reshape the content of global discourse but also challenge the prevailing international order that upholds free speech
Success Factors for Environmentally Sustainable Product Innovation: A Meta-analysis
Growing environmental challenges and sustainability imperatives have intensified firms’ need to pursue environmentally sustainable product innovation (ESPI), leading to a surge of research examining the factors that determine its success. This study presents a meta-analysis of 182 independent samples and contributes to our understanding of ESPI in three major ways. First, by adopting the open systems theory, this meta-analysis presents a holistic, integrated examination of the driving factors of ESPI and assesses their relative importance, marking a significant leap in environmental sustainability and innovation management research. Second, by comparing these findings with established meta-analyses of product innovation, it reveals whether ESPI necessitates a novel theoretical paradigm or can be contextualized within established innovation-management frameworks. Although some of ESPI’s success factors are common to conventional product innovation, this study highlights factors that are specific to ESPI, which suggests that the development of ESPI should be treated differently from that of conventional product innovation. Third, the analysis shows that ESPI’s drivers are contingent upon the institutional context, national culture and level of economic development significantly moderate their effects. Collectively, these findings advance theory integration in sustainability and innovation management and offer actionable insights for managers and policymakers seeking to foster effective, context-sensitive ESPI strategies
Integrating Physical Activity Promotion into Psychological Practice: Clinical and Ethical Considerations
Physical activity is a well-established intervention for improving mental health outcomes, yet its integration into psychological practice remains under-researched. Psychologists, as mental health professionals, are well-positioned to promote physical activity. This Short Communication describes the case for physical activity promotion within psychological practice. We explore both clinical and ethical considerations for incorporating physical activity promotion into psychological practice, practical strategies using the ‘5As model’ and a case study to guide psychologists, addressing barriers to change and enhancing client motivation. Importantly, we discuss the need for further training and development for psychologists to ensure safe, impactful physical activity promotion is implemented in practice. By providing actionable recommendations, we aim to support psychologists in integrating physical activity promotion into their clinical practice, ultimately enhancing mental health care
Volatile evolution of silicic magmatic systems in the Central Main Ethiopian Rift: Insights from melt inclusions and apatite crystals of the Tullu Moye and Boset volcanoes
Magmatic volatile elements play a critical role in magma reservoir and ascent processes, from influencing the liquid line of descent to controlling magma storage dynamics and eruption style. However, constraining volatile behaviour prior to eruption remains challenging. This study presents a detailed model of pre-eruptive volatile content and evolution in a peralkaline magmatic system, based on integrated analyses of apatite crystals and glass (matrix and melt inclusions) from four explosive eruptions sourced from the Tullu Moye and Boset-Bericha volcanoes in the Main Ethiopian Rift. Apatite records from these eruptions indicate prolonged volatile-undersaturated conditions during magma crystallization at shallow crustal levels (~4–6 km depth). Thermodynamic modelling of measured apatite and melt inclusion compositions suggest that magmatic differentiation was the dominant control on volatile evolution during eruption. Apatite and melt inclusions from the Older Tullu Moye Pumice are compositionally distinct, exhibiting higher Cl and minor element contents (i.e., MgO) than those from subsequent comenditic eruptions at Tullu Moye and Boset-Bericha volcanoes. This likely reflects crystallization from a more primitive melt, associated with early-stage clinopyroxene phenocrysts of the Older Tullu Moye Pumice. Continued crystallization and differentiation in the Tullu Moye reservoir led to volatile and trace element enrichment, ultimately feeding the Younger Tullu Moye Pumice eruption. In contrast, the Boset-Bericha deposits show no comparable inter-eruption variation in magma composition, suggesting limited temporal evolution. Our integrated approach can be broadly applied to reconstruct the temporal evolution of pre-eruptive volatile behaviour in other volcanic systems
