Strong Asymptotic Freeness of Haar Unitaries in Quasi-Exponential Dimensional Representations
We prove almost sure strong asymptotic freeness of i.i.d. random unitaries with the following law: sample a Haar unitary matrix of dimension n and then send this unitary into an irreducible representation of U(n). The strong convergence holds as long as the irreducible representation arises from a pair of partitions of total size at most n142−ε and is uniform in this regime. Previously this was known for partitions of total size up to ≍logn/loglogn by a result of Bordenave and Collins
Why the promise of green jobs has limited resonance: Industrial attachments in 'net zero' transitions
‘Green jobs’ discourse circulates with intensity among climate policy networks in the United Kingdom and internationally. Social actors assume that the promise of the mass delivery of green jobs will help to build public support for a net zero industrial transition among communities with affective ties to high-carbon industries. In this paper, I use interview and ethnographic data collected in a northern English town to critically examine this assumption. Drawing on conceptual work about the nature of ‘attachments’, I show that proposals for the delivery of new green jobs and industries are felt to lack credibility and have limited resonance with some communities. By making this argument, I put forward a novel analysis within energy and industrial geographies about the tension between imagined sustainable futures (envisaged by policymakers and environmental campaigners) and the materiality of attachments to traditional industries (experienced by communities). I conclude by exploring how low carbon infrastructures might be rendered more affecting. One response lies in recognising and repurposing people’s industrial attachments; this necessitates forms of investment attuned to place-specific sensitivities
Self-induced transparency and optical transients in atomic vapors
The rapid turn-on of a strong, resonant, continuous wave laser field may trigger the formation of a transient oscillation akin to a train of damped solitons, before the vapor-field system relaxes into a stationary state. We study this transient dynamic on theoretical models of a rubidium vapor. We also consider doubly resonant V systems, for which the transients take the form of trains of damped simultons. We compute the propagating field(s) by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations, taking homogeneous broadening, Doppler broadening and the full hyperfine structure of the atoms into account. We also compare the actual fields to the stationary dnoidal fields predicted by the Maxwell-Bloch equations in conditions of self-induced transparency. A similar dynamics is expected to occur in any atomic vapor at the turn-on of a strong resonant continuous wave field provided the turn-on is sufficiently fast compared to relaxation

Gully erosion in India: Geo‐environmental controls and region‐specific characteristics
Gully erosion, which is the rapid incision of soils by concentrated overland and/or subsurface runoff, affects India widely. However, Central and Western India suffer from particularly intense land degradation as prolonged gullying has resulted in the formation of extensive badlands therein. Considerable research has been conducted on these badlands, but drivers and characteristics of gully erosion in other regions suffering from widespread gullying are unknown. Employing cluster and hotspot analyses using a novel spatial database of India‧s gully landforms, this study provides a regional synthesis of gully erosion in India. Different sets of variables were found to control the spatial patterns of the various gully erosion landforms in India, and analytical results were synthesised using India‧s physiographic divisions to identify and delineate six major gully‐affected regions across the country, namely, Eastern Uplands, Deccan Uplands, Yamuna Basin, Rajasthan Uplands, Gujarat Plains, and Kachchh. Although gully erosion in the Eastern Uplands was triggered by extensive deforestation in the previous centuries, it remains an active geomorphic phenomenon in this part of India, similar to the Kachchh region in Western India. Contrastingly, gully erosion features of the Deccan exhibit very little to no activity at the present. Not only does this study refute the popular belief that the only hotspots of gully erosion in India are the badlands of Central and Western India, but it also provides useful guidance for future regional and local gully erosion studies, besides adding to the knowledge base of Indian physical geography and potentially aiding in regional land management planning
Outcome of preterm infants (<30 weeks) born to mothers who smoked: propensity score matching study
Background: Maternal smoking has been associated with adverse neonatal outcomes; specifically, outcomes of preterm-born after maternal smoking have not been studied. Objective: To compare the short-term hospital outcomes of preterm infants born to mothers who ‘ever smoked’ with matched preterm infants born to mothers who ‘never smoked’. Methods: This was a matched retrospective cohort study including all preterm infants <30 weeks between March 2019 and March 2023. Matching was performed, creating propensity scores with ‘Mother ever smoked versus Mother never smoked’ as dependent outcomes with birth gestational age, baby gender and Apgar score at 1 min as covariates. The standardised mean difference (SMD) was used to assess any potential imbalance. Appropriate statistical tests were applied. Results: We had a total of 179 preterm infants born <30 weeks. After excluding 26 deaths, we had a total of 153 infants available for analysis before matching. After matching, we had 46 infants in each group (table 1). There was no imbalance between the baseline demographic and clinical factors, with all SMDs ≤0.1, except for the Apgar score at 10 min. Infants in the smoking group were significantly less likely to need surfactant (OR: 0.33) and were highly likely to be discharged on home oxygen (OR: 2.7). There was no difference in death rates between the two groups (16% in the non-smoking group vs 12% in the smoking group). Conclusions: In this propensity score matching study, infants whose mothers ever smoked were more likely to be discharged on home oxygen
Subsidiary strategy in the modern multinational: Grappling with change and complexity
This perspective article calls for a conceptual reset of subsidiary strategy research, addressing the fragmentation and semantic ambiguity that have diluted its theoretical coherence. We trace the field’s evolution from static role typologies to dynamic, capability- and knowledge-based views that recognize subsidiaries as active strategists within multinational enterprises (MNEs). In today’s world of deglobalization, geopolitical tension, and technological disruption, we re-anchor subsidiary strategy in the core principles of strategy, where deliberate and emergent choices, the configuration of activities, and the pursuit of sustained advantage are adapted to the MNE’s internal competitive arena. We advance an integrative framework highlighting identity, legitimacy, subsidiary leadership agency and non-market engagement as complementary factors influencing subsidiary strategic trajectories. We propose a future research agenda emphasizing processual, longitudinal, and microfoundational approaches to explain how subsidiaries build influence, reconfigure mandates, and secure survival within evolving global value chains
‘Mom’s Boys’, ‘Phoenix Men’, ‘Soft Rice Men’ and ‘Puxin Men’: The application of Chinese masculinities to domestic abuse perpetrators
The correlation between domestic violence and masculinities has been confirmed by many studies. In China, although there is already relevant research examining domestic violence from the perspective of masculinity, they have seldom prioritized women’s perspectives, which feminist scholars argue are crucial for exposing the mechanisms of patriarchal power. Prevailing theories of masculinity, particularly Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, are rooted in Western contexts and how her theory can be applied to the Chinese context is a question worth discussion. Our study indigenizes Connell’s framework to investigate how Chinese women on the social media platform Weibo construct and critique masculinities in the context of domestic violence. A dataset of 1,514 comments related to three high-profile domestic violence cases was collected and analyzed through the lens of four memetic discourses: “Mom’s boys”, “Phoenix men”, “Soft rice men”, and “Puxin men”. The key undesirable masculine traits identified by women include “irresponsibility or excessive filial piety to the original family”, “traditional rural background”, “economic dependence”, “gender superiority”, and a rejection of “violence” and “disrespect toward women”. This study further theorizes contemporary Chinese masculinities by bridging Chinese masculinity studies with digital feminist critiques of domestic violence, highlighting how shifting gender expectations intersect with class, economic status, the urban-rural divide, and gendered power dynamics in contemporary China, shaping women’s critiques of male perpetrators. It also reveals contradictions within feminist discourse in Chinese context, where women simultaneously reject traditional male dominance while upholding certain gendered expectations that may inadvertently reinforce patriarchal ideals
Practice considerations when responding to peer-on-peer abuse
This research briefing provides an overview of the evidence relating to interventions, frameworks and approaches relevant when responding to peer-on-peer abuse among children and young people. It focuses on both those who cause harm and those who experience harm, recognising the overlaps in young people’s experiences. The briefing draws on findings from a rapid review of academic databases and grey literature from government and third sector organisations in Scotland. The aim of the review is to inform practice within Bairns’ Hoose Pathfinder programme for change in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire and other developing Bairns’ Hooses in Scotland. It maps a range of possible responses and frameworks, highlighting shared principles, benefits and tensions in practice for practitioners to consider. Given the nature of available evidence, it does not claim to identify ‘what works’ or recommend replicable practice
ConRF: Zero-shot stylization of 3D scenes with conditioned radiation fields
Most of the existing works on arbitrary 3D NeRF style transfer required retraining on each single style condition. This work aims to achieve zero-shot controlled stylization in 3D scenes utilizing text or visual input as conditioning factors. We introduce ConRF, a novel method of zero-shot stylization. Specifically, due to the ambiguity of CLIP features, we employ a conversion process that maps the CLIP feature space to the style space of a pre-trained VGG network and then refine the CLIP multi-modal knowledge into a style transfer neural radiation field. Additionally, we use a 3D volumetric representation to perform local style transfer. By combining these operations, ConRF offers the capability to utilize either text or images as references, resulting in the generation of sequences with novel views enhanced by global or local stylization. Our experiment demonstrates that ConRF outperforms other existing methods for 3D scene and single-text stylization in terms of visual quality. Code is available: https://xingy038.github.io/ConRF
