ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstratethe scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The partners in the project arethe European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, the People´s Republic of China,India, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA. ITER will be constructedin Europe, at Cadarache in the South of France.A prototype of a laser In Vessel Viewing System was developed at ENEA laboratoriesin Frascati, which uses the amplitude modulated laser radar concept and it is conceivedto withstand the severe ITER conditions. The IVVS (In Vessel Viewing System) probe hasbeen designed and built to perform sub-millimetric three-dimensional images insideITER during maintenance procedure and it is based on an intrinsically radiation resistantconcept and architecture.CASPUR has developed the control/visualization software of the inspection system, which drives all the operations needed to perform an inspection: it is a graphical applicationthat starts an acquisition, performs the necessary data conversion to speedup theanalysis, archives and manages previous acquisitions, displays the reconstructed 3dscene, possibly comparing it with CAD data, while providing a range of image analysisand filtering tools
The Data Optimization integrated Tool (DOiT) is part of a collaboration between CASPURand the Italian national institute of geophysics and volcanology INGV. DOiT is a tool thatmix together web technologies, systems and High Performance Computing (HPC) forthe analysis of geophysical problems. One of the main feature of DOiT is the user interfacethat with the use of new web tools makes it very similar to a desktop applicationwith the advantage of the high portability and the ease of access. The main goal of this project is to make HPC systems usable in a very easy way ingeophysical research, where the computational complexity and the high size of theproblems make its use a must
Multiferroics (for example materials where ferroelectricity and magnetism coexist) arepresently drawing enormous interests, due to their technologically-relevant multifunctionalcharacter and to the astoundingly rich playground for fundamental condensedmatterphysics they constitute. Our project, named BISMUTH and financed as a StartingGrant by the European Research Council, is based on a theoretical and computationalstudy of multiferroics. In particular, several concepts on how to break inversion symmetryand achieve sizable ferroelectricity in magnets are put forward; our approach iscorroborated via first-principles calculations (performed at CASPUR) as tools to quantitativelyestimate relevant ferroelectric and magnetic properties as well as to reveal abinitiothe main mechanisms behind the dipolar and magnetic orders. In closer detail,we focus on the interplay between ferroelectricity and electronic degrees of freedomin magnets, i.e. on those cases where spin- or orbital- or charge-ordering can be thedriving force for a spontaneous polarization to develop. Antiferromagnetism is consideredas a primary mechanism for lifting inversion symmetry; however, the effects ofcharge disproportionation and orbital ordering are also being studied by examining awide class of materials, including ortho-manganites with E-type spin-arrangement,non-E-type antiferromagnets, nickelates, etc. The link between electronic degrees offreedom and ferroelectricity in collinear magnets is an almost totally unexplored fieldby ab-initio methods; indeed, its clear understanding and optimization would lead toa scientific breakthrough in the multiferroics area. Technologically, it would pave theway to materials design of magnetic ferroelectrics with properties persisting at hightemperatures and, therefore, to a novel generation of electrically-controlled spintronicdevices
The application SBN Unix C/S handles the feature Import UNIMARC, allowing to obtain information on the data of pole and library from a database, without conversation with SBN. In 2008, CILEA gained a remarkable expe-rience on the usage of this procedure, importing data for some libraries belonging to the MIL pole. The chances offered by the procedure and the successful imports render Import UNIMARC a useful activity both for libraries belonging to SBN and for libraries wanting to join it.L’applicativo SBN Unix C/S dispone della funzionalità Import UNIMARC che permette di acquisire sulle basi dati di polo e biblio informazioni derivanti da un data base gestito senza colloquio con SBN.
Conferenza MRSC 2008
On April the first MRSC conference outside Manchester took place in Belfast. FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and GP-GPU (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit) accelerators are going to become an important piece of high performance clusters, in spite of the technical difficulties. This fact is helping to turn actual the forecasting vision of clusters with heterogeneous nodes, in which are interested the most important research computing centres.
VWEB (UniPOS© web version), a service that allows to manage the university careers in a fully digital manner via web, is presented. The system has been recently adopted by the University of Milan, after a pilot project lasted about 18 months. In 6 months of use, approximately 5000 examinations have been managed and recorded by the system.
Libraries and information organisations are in need of solutions to manage and preserve the diverse and rapidly increasing digital content that is being placed in their care.
In 2002 ICCU started the projet "SBN Index Evolution", that aims to transform the Index system into a services' centre with a broad spectrum, able to welcome versatile the evolution of the bibliographic national services. Within this evolution, as well as architectural and referential standard changes, it has been stated to open the SBN cooperation to commercial softwares, too, with a quality certification process managed by the Group of Maintenance of the SBNMARC protocol. In this way CILEA is starting a new SBN Pole named "Lombardia 2", in cooperation with CG Soluzioni Informatiche. This article describes the current situation.
