Analysis of the Antioxidant Activity in Human Milk, day vs. night

    No full text
Human milk has many advantages for the development of the breast-fed baby, among vitamins A, C and E, which are essential as an antioxidant defense. In newborn infants, oxidative stress is important due to the immaturity of the antioxidant defense mechanisms and the digestive system. It is well known that the components of breast milk are not constant throughout the 24 hour period. This variation can depend on the mother’s diet during this period. The aim of the study was to analyze the antioxidant capacity of the human milk throughout the 24 hour period, and to study the antioxidant changes between day and night period. The levels of Trolox Equivalent were statistically significant (

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on motor and sensorial nerves for diabetic polyneuropathy patients by use of electromyography

    No full text
About 20–30% of diabetic patients are affected by DP. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and electrical has been proposed as physical therapies. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of high rate frequency modulation (HRFM) with TENS treatment on patients which have diabetic polyneuropathy (DP). Patients with type 2 diabetes and DP (n=14) both upper extremities were treated for 20 min daily for twenty consecutive days. The patients’ values of glucose, amplitude and latency were measured by use of EMG at before TENS, after TENS and following term of TENS. Patients were similar in terms of baseline characteristics, such as age, duration of diabetes, neurological symptoms scores and neurological disability scores. Differences among glucose levels related to before TENS, after TENS and following term of TENS are found statistically significant (

Preventive effect of zinc toward the hepatotoxicity of nickel in rats

    No full text
We studied the effect of zinc treatment on nickel sulphate-induced hepatotoxicity in male albino rats. Liver dysfunction parameters represented by aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), blood glucose, serum total protein and serum albumin were estimated. Liver glutathione level, catalase and GPx activities were also determined in liver as indicators of oxidative damage. Exposure of rats to nickel caused a significant a decrease in body weight and an increase in liver weight compared to the controls. Nickel treatment was also led to high glucose concentration and produced hepatotoxicity characterized by increasing GPT, GOT and alkaline phosphatase activities. Meanwhile nickel administration resulted in low serum total protein and serum albumin. In addition liver glutathione level, catalase and GSH-Px activities were diminished due to high lipid peroxidation. Meanwhile the administration of zinc with nickel resulted in a remarkable improvement of the previous parameters comparison with rats treated with nickel alone. Liver histological studies have confirmed the changes observed in biochemical parameters and proved the beneficial role of zinc. In conclusion, nickel sulphate led to liver dysfunction and hepatic lipid peroxidation in animals, but simultaneous treatment with zinc offers a relative protection against nickel induced hepatotoxicity and lipid peroxidation probably due to its antioxidant proprieties

Effects of Nigella sativa L. on Lipid Peroxidation and Reduced Glutathione Levels in Erythrocytes of Broiler Chickens

    No full text
We aimed to determine the effect of Nigella sativa L. on reduced glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation (as malondialdehyde, MDA) in erythrocytes of broiler chickens. We used 100 Ross 308 chickens and they were equally divided into four groups namely control, 0.5 %, 1 % and 1.5 % containing Nigella sativa L. The control group received control broiler fattening feed whereas, the treatments groups were fed by the feed containing 0.5 %, 1 % and 1.5 % grinded Nigella sativa L. seeds for 6 weeks, respectively. Erythrocyte MDA levels were significantly lower in 0.5 % (

Melatonin regulation of some important metabolic enzymes during intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats

    No full text
Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is known to result from both tissue hypoxia and the consequences of reperfusion of ischemic tissues. In addition, ATP stores are depleted during ischemia because of the relatively inefficient production of ATP by glycolysis. In this study, the effect of melatonin on some important metabolic enzymes hexokinase (HK), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) responsible for generation of energy was investigated. Melatonin was determined to cause a distinct regulation of these enzymes. While the activity of the enzyme HK of the first step of glycolysis was significantly higher in pre-melatonin treated I/R group than group I/R animals, the activities of LDH and G6PD were decreased markedly with melatonin application. Although, the MDH levels of pre-melatonin treated I/R group were higher than the sham control group, this might not be a result of melatonin application, since both I/R and I/(Mel/R) groups also showed even higher MDH activity than the control group

AKARSULARDAKİ KATI MADDE MİKTARININ YAPAY SİNİR AĞLARI İLE TAHMİNİ: KIZILIRMAK NEHRİ ÖRNEĞİ

Bu çalışmada, son yıllarda su kaynakları mühendisliğinde kullanım alanı geniş olan yapay sinir ağları (YSA) yöntemi katı madde miktarı tahmininde kullanılmıştır. Katı madde tahmini için Kızılırmak Nehri’nde bulunan Yamula gözlem istasyonuna ait 1973-2003 yılları arasında bulunan akım verileri girdi parametresi olarak kullanılarak çeşitli YSA modelleri geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen modeller incelendiğinde, YSA yönteminin katı madde tahmininde kullanılabileceği görülmüştür

ENDÜSTRİYEL DEMİR TALAŞI ATIĞININ BETONUN BAZI MEKANİK ÖZELLİKLERİNE ETKİSİ

    Get PDF
