From Nature and Fiction to Reality: A Typology and Framework for Attribute Auto-Dynamics in Bioinspired Product Design Ideation
<p>Several innovative new product designs feature attribute auto-dynamics—the property that enables a product to adapt its attributes automatically in response to changing user, product-system, or environmental (UPSE) conditions. This property is commonly observed in living systems and bioinspired design product concepts. Product designs with attribute auto-dynamics (AAD) also mimic biological properties such as homeostasis, self-healing, photoreception, behavioral plasticity, and adaptive morphology. Numerous products with analogous bio-inspired AAD characteristics, once confined to the realm of science fiction, have now materialized into reality thanks to technological progress in fields like material science and artificial intelligence. In addition to explicating auto-dynamics, we propose a four-part (contingent, distinctive, associative, and generative) typology of attribute auto-dynamics, based on an examination of U.S. utility patents. We also specify a procedural framework for the use of this property in structured product ideation and describe how this framework can validated through AI-assisted structured design concept generation using generative AI models.</p>
