In recent decades, sustainability has become a central focus of civil engineering, especially in projects that require a high economic investment, a significant impact on the urban environment and an intense use of resources. Sports stadiums, as singular and large-scale infrastructures, not only represent architectural and social landmarks, but also exert a significant influence on the environment in which they are inserted.
This work focuses on the quantification of sustainability index of sports stadiums that have been remodelled on the basis of existing infrastructures, considering only the stadium's operation phase. The choice of this phase responds to the need to analyse the real performance of these facilities once they have been put into operation, leaving the design and construction stages out of the scope of this study. Through the development of a sustainability index, the work seeks to establish a quantitative model that allows different stadiums to be compared according to their long-term operational performance. To this end, eight indicators have been defined, grouped into three fundamental criteria of sustainability: economic, social and environmental.
Five case studies are presented, chosen for the existence of remodelling, importance, national and international representativeness, among other factors; all of them being susceptible to sustainability analysis. The case studies are as follows: Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Estadio de la Cerámica, San Mamés Stadium, Spotify Camp Nou and Etihad Stadium.
Throughout the paper, a clear and replicable methodology is presented for the collection and processing of the data, the calculation of the sustainability index and the interpretation of the results obtained
The medieval stained glass in Catalonia: Girona cathedral
The production and distribution of stained glass in Mediterranean Europe during the Middle Ages remains inadequately understood. This article focuses on Catalonia, where local glass production is documented as early as the 13th century, but little is known about the production of window glass. This study analyses a collection of stained glass fragments from Girona Cathedral, dating from the 13th to the 16th century, some of which is the work of renowned master glassmakers. The data obtained is compared with contemporary stained glass documented from other parts of Europe, and with a collection of 15th and 16th century archaeological window glass from Barcelona. The data is also contrasted with historical documentation on glass production in Catalonia. The findings reveal that the glass from Girona from the 13th and 14th centuries is of the potassium-lime type, similar to that produced in the workshops of north-western France. By the late 14th and 15th centuries, the composition aligns more closely with that of north-eastern France. In the 16th century, however, the glass changes to a soda-lime composition, similar to the glass found in Barcelona, suggesting a transition from central European to Mediterranean sources, and indicates a change in the raw materials involving the use of soda-lime plant ash instead of potassium-lime forest ash. These results indicate that the production of window glass shifted from France to Barcelona at the close of the 15th century.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Synergizing OpenMP paradigms through free agents and nOS-V
The recent OpenMP 6.0 standard introduces the free-agents feature, enabling a more dynamic execution model that improves application malleability and resource utilization. Free-agents allow idle threads within a parallel region to be reassigned to execute tasks from other regions. However, integrating this feature into complex runtimes—such as LLVM’s libomp—presents significant challenges due to its departure from traditional threading models. In previous work, we addressed the challenge of implementing free-agents by leveraging the nOS-V threading and tasking library. Our approach not only reduced the implementation complexity but also supported task-aware libraries and the co-execution of applications. Early evaluations demonstrated improved performance of libompv with free-agents compared to the original libomp implementation across a sample of benchmarks. In this paper, we expand our previous work with a more in-depth analysis using larger applications from the SPEC HPC 2021 benchmark suite and evaluate our initial hypothesis by co-executing applications with distinct parallelization paradigms. Furthermore, we extend instrumentation tools to analyze the core benefits of our free-agents implementation through nOS-V. Our results show that the free-agents implementation has negligible overhead across both tasking and fork-join modes, and that co-executing applications with distinct parallelism paradigms can produce performance benefits even when only one of the applications leverages the free-agents feature. This work was partially supported by the Generalitat de Catalunya (contract 2021-SGR-01007), the Spanish Government through the Severo Ochoa Program (CEX2021-001148-S/MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), and the ST4HPC research project (PID2023-147979NB-C21), funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and FEDER, UE. Robot Learning from Human Demonstrations
Learning by demonstration is one of the most efficient methods humans use to acquire new skills. Applying this paradigm to robotics offers a path toward faster and more scalable skill acquisition, by enabling robots to learn directly from human behavior. Yet, a fundamental challenge persists: the embodiment gap between humans and robots. Differences in morphology, actuation, and control systems make it difficult for robots to directly interpret and replicate human actions. Alternatives to solving robot learning either rely on large-scale teleoperated data collection, which is costly and time-consuming, or simulation-based training, which suffers from sim-to-real transfer challenges and requires significant engineering effort to create realistic environments. This dissertation introduces a data-efficient framework for robot learning that directly leverages human demonstrations, building on recent advances in 3D perception and visual understanding from real-world imagery and videos. The first contribution proposes a 3D hand estimation method that extends state-of-the-art vision-language and segmentation models to extract accurate geometric representations of human hands from RGB-D data. Using this foundation, we then develop a highly sample-efficient grasping method that enables robots to learn where and how to grasp objects from just a single video demonstration, achieving robust generalization across new environments. Finally, we extend this capability to complex, long-horizon tasks by learning generative models of short-term behavior, providing effective intermediate representations that support end-to-end learning systems. These contributions demonstrate that robots can efficiently acquire skills directly from human demonstrations, paving the way toward more natural, scalable, and generalizable robot learning.Outgoin
Modern companies need to efficiently manage their communications to optimize internal processes and ensure better customer experience. In this context, Directia Travel, a travel agency specialized in personalized services to Asia, faces the challenge of centralizing its communications dispersed across multiple channels such as email, WhatsApp, and phone. Detecting low-density mixtures in high-quantile tails for pWCET estimation
The variability arising from sophisticated hardware and software solutions in cutting-edge embedded products causes software to exhibit complex execution time distributions. Mixture distributions can happen, with different density (weight), as a result of inherent different features in the execution platform and multiple operational scenarios. In the context of probabilistic WCET (pWCET) analysis based on Extreme Value Theory (EVT), where identical distribution is a pre-requisite, mixtures are typically intercepted by applying stationarity tests on the full sample. Those tests, however, are instructed to detect only mixtures with sufficiently high probability (weight) and disregard low-density mixtures (which are unlikely to be preserved in the high-quantile tail of the sample) as they would prevent any form of stationarity. Nonetheless, low-density mixture distributions can persist and even exacerbate in the tail, and, when not considered, they can impair pWCET estimation in EVT-based approaches, leading to overly pessimistic or optimistic bounds. In this work, we propose TailID, an iterative point-wise approach that builds on the asymptotic convergence of the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) of the Extreme Value Index (EVI) parameter ξ to detect low-density mixture distributions on high-quantile tails and use this information to steer EVT tail selection. The benefits of the proposed method are assessed on synthetic mixture distributions and real data collected on an industrially representative embedded platform. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme under the SAFEXPLAIN Project (www.safexplain.eu), grant agreement num. 101069595 and project PLEC2023-010240 funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 (CAPSUL-IA).
