Beowulfiana: Modern Adaptations of Beowulf
No full textThis content relates to an exhibition of Beowulf artifacts in the Robbins Library from December 1, 2004 - March 15, 2005. My inspiration for this assortment of "Beowulfiana" (items based in some way upon the poem Beowulf) is the remarkable collection of Arthuriana assembled over many years by Dr. Alan Lupack. When I first beheld the broad scope and the sheer magnitude of his collection at the Camelot 2000 conference at the University of Rochester, I decided to begin my own collection, one that was devoted to my favorite work of literature, the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf. I chose not to include translations and editions of the poem (those materials that are already well known to scholars and students alike), but to focus instead on adaptations, retellings, and transformations into new media. These include fantasy novels, comic books, films, musical compositions, and a remarkably diverse range of other objects. The collection continues to grow at a steady pace, often leading me to marvel at the extent to which Beowulf has permeated twentieth- and twenty-first-century Anglophone culture.</p

They present, in broad strokes, the development of Robin Hood from his origins in medieval literature through his modern depictions. The purpose of the exhibit, and the adaptation of this guide, is to give an overview of the character and a sense of his pervasiveness in modern culture, not to give a full history of Robin Hood (for which, see J. C. Holt, Robin Hood, or Stephen Knight, Robin Hood: A Complete Study of the English Outlaw, among others, in the Select Bibliography).This document was adapted from a webpage hosted on the Robbins Library website, before being converted into a static document and uploaded to URRR on 2024-01-26.</p
Aquaporin 4 Expression and Size Dependent Solute Movement in the Brain
No full textThe poster was presented in the Natural Sciences division during the Undergraduate Research Poster Expo on April 12, 2024.Abstract: The glymphatic system circulates cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through the brain, clearing metabolic waste along perivascular and perineuronal pathways. During previous work, CSF tracer localization in vessels was observed in aquaporin-4 knockout (AQP4 KO) mice. Compared to the AQP4 KO mice, wild type mice were visually observed to exhibit greater brain tissue/parenchymal tracer influx as opposed to the increased perivascular/pial tracer circulation in the AQP4 KO mice. Because AQP4 KO mice have been shown to have enlarged interstitial spaces and reduced glymphatic clearance, it is suspected that structural or functional changes in AQP4 KO mice would result in a decreased ability for CSF tracer to exit the perivascular space and into the parenchyma. By infusing 3 kD and 70 kD dextran CSF tracer through the cisterna magna, we can quantify this difference and better understand how AQP4 dysfunction can be implicated in waste clearance and disease.</p

A Multidisciplinary Exploration into Flow in Writing
No full textOffering a multidisciplinary exploration of “flow” and the often-nebulous ways it is conceptualized and operationalized in writing pedagogy, this book addresses a critical gap in writing studies.Bringing together practice-based and scholarly perceptions, it outlines the key features and definitions of flow, and identifies pedagogical approaches and opportunities for classroom instruction. Incorporating perspectives from disciplines including classical rhetoric, composition studies, cognitive science, and linguistics, this book provides a diverse overview of the literature on flow in writing pedagogy. It includes two instructional voice-based and rhetorical grammar-based activities that outline how to recognize and improve flow in writing. Synopsis of the Letters in the Anthony-Avery Papers
No full textThe synopsis was done by Lagusta Yearwood (University of Rochester, class of 2000) while completing English 394, during Fall 1999 to Spring 2000. It contains synopses of 208 letters between Susan B. Anthony and Rachel Foster Avery between 1882 and 1904. In addition to the synopses Yearwood provides historical background for each year, describing what was going on in Anthony's and Avery's lives and more broadly in the women's suffrage movement. These letters were drawn from a collection in the custody of the University of Rochester, River Campus Libraries, Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation department, specifically the Anthony-Avery papers (collection identifier: D.16).</p
