Importance of Wetland Restoration in Western Ohio

    No full text
This viz is about the impacts of the loss of wetlands in Ohio and uses maps to depict historical wetland boundaries compared to current boundaries. It also uses data to show correlation between wetland restoration and a decrease in harmful algal bloom severity in Lake Erie as well as an increase in marsh bird sightings. This was submitted as part of the 2024 Data Bloom Viz competition. This project was created using ArcGIS and Google Sheets and is based on the following data sources: eBird. 2021. eBird, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, New York. Data Discovery Meets Experiential Learning: The Core10 Project

    No full text
Assistance in finding data is a quintessential question most Data Services departments encounter on a regular basis. Unsatisfied with our resources to aid with this quandary, our department decided to pilot a project we labeled Core10. As the project took shape, it became evident that it would be beneficial as an experiential learning opportunity for our library's summer internship program.A core tenet of our strategic plan, the donor-funded summer internship employs undergraduates as paid interns, and assigns unique projects that improve library services. Experiential learning emphasizes the process of learning by doing and highlights active participation and reflection. As data skills are in demand, and the proposed project would benefit from student ingenuity and reflection, we proposed Core10 as one of the internships.Core10 was conceived in response to consultations from students seeking help with data discovery. Requests spanned multiple classes and disciplines, and required considerable librarian effort. The Core10 managers envisioned addressing this with a curated data course reserve featuring open, multidisciplinary datasets. The intern first conducted a community needs assessment to identify patron data requirements, and then used this assessment to curate ten datasets that could be easily adapted for general use. The intern conducted research on varying datasets based on identified community needs. Dataset selection was based on parameters including dataset size, subject, and application (e.g. data cleaning, visualization, machine learning, and mapping). The Core10 collection was deposited in an institutional repository and was made available for coursework and research.Core10 highlighted the importance of understanding community needs and engaging with users through creative data curation. It also provided the intern with career development opportunities, project management skills, and material for their professional portfolio. In this presentation we will discuss the summer internship program, the Core10 project, and the experiential learning internship.</p

    General Chemistry Textbook, volume 2

    No full text
This is volume 2 of the textbook for General Chemistry at the University of Rochester, CHEM 131 and CHEM 132. The substance of this textbook is excerpted from the book Chemistry: Atoms First 2e which is available in Open Stax. The Open Stax materials have been put together by a consortium of diverse faculty from across the country and made freely available. The UR faculty who teach introductory Chemistry have chosen these materials for this course since they are both high quality and free of charge to students. This current version has been customized for our own curriculum so that the materials are presented in the order deemed best by the UR faculty.Acknowledgements for the conceptual organization go to Profs. Hafensteiner, Knowles, Matson, McCamant, Olsen, Rothberg and Stanford. Assembly of the text was facilitated by the generous support of the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries’ Open Education Grant. We extend our heartfelt thanks for their funding, which enabled the invaluable contributions of a student worker, Carolyn Xu, who played a critical role in this project. Thanks too to the River Campus Libraries’ Open Educational Resources Working Group members Eileen Daly-Boas and Wendy Way. The original Chemistry textbook can be found at https://openstax.org/details/books/chemistry-atoms-first-2e and the preface to that work can be found in Appendix N of this modified text.</p

A Librarian’s Role In Academic Reading Strategies For ESOL Students

Academic libraries have a long reputation for helping both faculty and students. The University of Rochester’s River Campus Libraries follow this tradition of partnering in scholarly pursuits. All students have an opportunity to attend a variety of library instruction sessions such as a review of traditional citation formats or academic integrity instruction. In particular, our librarians welcome our international students to campus and help them acclimate to American academic conventions.Wu, K. L., & Sloan, G. P. (2023).
