    Valorization black carrot colorant process liquid waste by clarification and Decolorization: A novel sugar alternative for gummies

    The aim of this study was to develop a recycling process for black carrot colorant liquid waste (BCLW) and to investigate the potential use of BCLW as a sugar source for glucose syrup substitution in gummy candy production. Clarification and decolorization were performed using ion exchange and adsorbent resins at three flow rates, followed by evaporation. The highest clarity (88.7 %) was achieved with modified styrene-divinylbenzene resin at 1.0 BV/h. Subsequently, BCLW was incorporated into gummy formulations as a glucose syrup substitute. Higher hardness values were recorded in formulations with over 75 % of BCLW incorporated, compared to the gummy samples produced with 100 % glucose syrup. The brightness remained considerably high when the glucose syrup was replaced with BCLW up to 50 %. Accelerated shelf-life tests showed changes in color and hardness. BCLW presents a sustainable alternative for the confectionery industry, offering a practical solution for waste reduction while contributing to resource efficiency.This study was granted by TUBİTAK (Project No: 123O211). “Qatar National Library funded the publication of this article.

    Gold (AuNPs) and silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles (NPs) have drawn significant attention in biomedical research due to their distinctive physicochemical properties, which govern their biological interactions. A comprehensive understanding of the nano-bio interface is essential for advancing therapeutic applications with favorable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles in drug delivery, imaging, and diagnostics. Multiplexed simultaneous analysis using co-administered metallic nanoparticles offers a promising strategy to assess critical parameters-such as size, shape, and surface chemistry-that influence the nano-bio interface. However, evaluating toxicity is imperative, as biocompatibility is a prerequisite for the safe and effective use of these NPs as biomedical probes. This study explores the biodistribution, potential toxicity, and metabolic alterations associated with the intravenous administration of AuNPs and AgNPs-either individually or combined-in a rat model. Spherical polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified AuNPs and AgNPs with particle sizes of 13 nm and 20 nm, respectively, were synthesized and administered to 24 rats, equally divided into four groups: control, PEG-AuNPs, PEG-AgNPs, and a coadministration group receiving both PEG-AuNPs and PEG-AgNPs. Serum and organ tissues were collected 24 hours post-injection. Biodistribution was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), toxicity was assessed via real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and metabolic changes were evaluated using liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and flow injection analysis-tandem mass spectrometry (FIA-MS/MS). The results demonstrated significant accumulation of PEG-AuNPs and PEG-AgNPs in the blood, liver, and spleen, with no detectable toxicity. Metabolic profiling revealed that PEG AuNPs notably affected sphingomyelin levels, bile acid metabolism, and cholesterol esters, indicating potential disruptions in lipid homeostasis and pyrimidine/purine metabolism. Importantly, the co-administration of PEG-AuNPs and PEG-AgNPs did not significantly alter biodistribution patterns or induce additional toxicity compared to individual administration. These findings provide critical insights into the biological interactions of PEGylated AuNPs and AgNPs, underscoring the significance of administration strategies in nanomedicine

    Examining depression, antidepressants use, and class and their potential associations with osteoporosis and fractures in adult women: Results from ten NHANES cohorts

    IntroductionOsteoporosis, a significant public health concern, affects millions of adult women globally, leading to increased morbidity and fracture risk. Antidepressant use, prevalent in this demographic, is suggested to influence bone mineral density (BMD), yet evidence remains limited across antidepressant classes. Objective/aimWe investigated the association between antidepressant use and osteoporosis in a representative sample of adult women in the United States, focusing on different classes of antidepressants and their potential associations with BMD and fracture risk. MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from ten cohorts of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999–2000 to 2017–2020. The sample included adult women, with data collected on antidepressant use, BMD scores, and reported fractures. Statistical models adjusted for potential confounders such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), age, physical activity, and comorbidities. ResultsAntidepressant use was associated with a 44 % increase in the odds of osteoporosis. Phenylpiperazines showed the highest association, followed by miscellaneous antidepressants and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) also demonstrated significant, though comparatively lower associations. The odds of fractures were elevated by 62 % among antidepressant users, particularly with phenylpiperazines and miscellaneous antidepressants. A dose-response analysis indicated that both the number and duration of antidepressants were associated with increased odds of osteoporosis. ConclusionOur findings underscore the need for heightened awareness of the adverse effects of antidepressants on bone health, particularly in adult women. Careful consideration is necessary when prescribing these medications, especially in populations at risk for osteoporosis and MDD

    Engineering the Immune Response to Biomaterials

    Biomaterials are increasingly used as implants in the body, but they often elicit tissue reactions due to the immune system recognizing them as foreign bodies. These reactions typically involve the activation of innate immunity and the initiation of an inflammatory response, which can persist as chronic inflammation, causing implant failure. To reduce these risks, various strategies have been developed to modify the material composition, surface characteristics, or mechanical properties of biomaterials. Moreover, bioactive materials have emerged as a new class of biomaterials that can induce desirable tissue responses and form a strong bond between the implant and the host tissue. In recent years, different immunomodulatory strategies have been incorporated into biomaterials as drug delivery systems. Furthermore, more advanced molecule and cell-based immunomodulators have been developed and integrated with biomaterials. These emerging strategies will enable better control of the immune response to biomaterials and improve the function and longevity of implants and, ultimately, the outcome of biomaterial-based therapies.A.S.M. and M.B. contributed equally to this work.     يهدف البحث إلى الكشف عن مادة أدبية متفرقة في المصادر القديمة، متنوعة في السياقات، هي أخبار السفراء في التراث العربي، ودراسة استجابة الخطاب في هذه الأخبار للسياقات المختلفة التي جمعت أولئك السفراء والملوك الذين قابلوهم. وافترض البحث أن للسفير شأنًا يتجاوز إيصال الرسالة، وأن المؤلفين الأوائل التفتوا إلى هذا، فاهتموا بما وصفه السفراء وما سردوه وما جادلوا فيه، وأن الخطاب قد استعان بوسائل لغوية ومهارات سردية ومسالك جدلية. وقد طالع الباحثُ تلك الأخبار، ووجدها وافرة، وخاصة السفارات في بداية الدولة الإسلامية في عهد النبي ﷺ وأبي بكر الصديق t، مع تنوع أنماطها، فقسم البحث وفق هذه الأنماط، ومثّل لكل نمط بأمثلة مناسبة المقدار، وحلّل هذه الأمثلة، بعد أن مهد البحث بدراسة مفهوم السفارة، ومفهوم أنماط الخطاب. فجمع بين الاستقراء والتحليل. وقد توصل إلى أن أخبار السفراء متعددة الأدوات في تأدية خطابها، وأن المؤلفين الأوائل التفتوا إلى قيمتها الوصفية والسردية والجدلية، وأسهموا في بروز هذه الأنماط؛ فابن الفقيه الهمذاني؛ المؤلف الجغرافي، أظهر الخطاب الوصفي في كتابه (البلدان)، وأبو العلاء المعري؛ المؤلف الأدبي، أظهر الخطاب السردي في رسالته (الصاهل والشاحج)، والقلقشندي؛ المؤلف الإداري، في كتابه (صبح الأعشى)، وابن حديدة؛ المؤلف التاريخي، في كتابه (المصباح المضي) أظهرا الخطاب الجدلي. والبحث يطمح إلى أن يكون رائدًا لمزيد من الدراسات في أخبار السفراء، وخاصة في العصور التي لم تتناولها هذه الدراسة.The research aims to explore various literary materials in ancient resources, diverse in contexts, which are Akhbar (the news) of AlSufraa (the Ambassadors/Envoys) in Arab heritage. The study investigates the response of this discourse in this khabar (news) to the different contexts in which AlSufraa met the kings whom they encountered. The research assumes that Almabeuth (the envoy) has a role that goes beyond delivering the message, and that the early authors devoted themselves to this aspect. They were interested in what AlSufraa described, narrated, and argued. The discourse employed linguistic means, narrative skills, and argumentative paths. The researcher has examined that khabar (news) and found them plentiful, especially AlSafarat (The Embassies) at the beginning of the Islamic state during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq. With their diversity, the researcher divided the research according to these types and provided suitable examples for each type. Moreover, he analyzed these examples after introducing the research by studying the concepts of AlSafarah and discourse types. He combined induction and analysis and concluded that khabar (the news) of AlSufraa employs multiple tools in delivering their discourse, and that the early authors embraced its descriptive, narrative, and argumentative value, contributing to the emergence of these patterns. The geographer, historian and author Ibn al-Faqih al-Hamadani, demonstrated descriptive discourse in his book Mukhtasar Kitab al-Buldan ("Concise Book of Lands"), and the literary author (Abu Al-Ala Al-Ma'arri) presented narrative discourse in his article "Al-Sahil wa Al-Shahij" (The Mare and the Foal). The administrative author (Al-Qalqashandi) in his book "Ṣubḥ al-A'shā " (The Morning of the blind) and the historical author (Ibn Hadeedah) in his book "Al-Masbah Al-Mudhi" (The Radiant Lamp) demonstrated argumentative discourse. The research hopes to be a pioneer for further research and study in khabar (the news) of AlSufraa, especially in eras that have not been addressed in this study
