From Silence to Broader Connection: Exploring Social Media’s Impact on Social- Emotional Learning for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth

    Get PDF
This project explores how social media and digital platforms can support the social-emotional learning of deaf and hearing-impaired adolescents by promoting self-expression, emotional support, and social connections. The inspiration for this project came from a documentary shot using visual ethnography methods at a special education school in Guilin, China. There, DHH students demonstrated rich emotional expressions among their peers through dance, gestures, and social media. This project further explored the potential of social media platforms in breaking down communication barriers, promoting inclusiveness, and enhancing Social Emotional Learning. In addition to the literature review, this project has also developed an interactive website, including documentaries, sign language learning resources, visual art exhibitions, multi-sensory modules and reflection sections. This platform combines Chinese Sign Language (CSL) and American Sign Language (ASL), featuring bright visual effects and gesture animations, aiming to reduce operational barriers and enhance cross-cultural accessibility. In addition to creative achievements, this project also reflects the challenges of inclusive digital design and emphasizes the importance of a user-centered approach. The future development directions include developing questionnaires based on vision and sign language, and conducting real-world user tests to further optimize the experience of DHH youth.Bachelor of Art

Keeping Sleep Aloof: Dreams and Dreaming Across Keats's Poetry

    Get PDF
Keats demonstrates a consistent interest in dreams and dreaming across his career. It is the goal of this project to explore Keats’s concepts of dream. The first chapter will discuss the role of dreams in classical antiquity and the literary motifs that emerge around them. These classical concepts of dreams stand in contrast to eighteenth and early nineteenth century concepts of dreams, which Keats is more inclined to reject. The second chapter will discuss the relationship of Milton to Keats—Milton’s influence on Keats’s writings, and Keats’s expansion of Milton’s concepts of dreaming and imagination—paying particular attention to the dream sequences of Paradise Lost, and to The Eve of St. Agnes. The second chapter will also discuss Keats’s concept of imagination as it assumes the form of flight. The third chapter will focus on Sleep and Poetry, revealing how these influences enter into Keats’s poetry, as well as the way Keats’s attitude towards dream changes in the Odes. The fourth chapter will focus on The Fall of Hyperion, presenting concluding remarks on dream across Keats’s career. Bachelor of Art

Investigating stress, community support, and kinship in LGBTQ+ family formation in the US South

    Get PDF
Research on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community has illustrated that queer individuals experience unique, and sometimes inequitable, experiences within healthcare and legal spaces. Previous research has also established that this extends to disparities with family formation, where LGBTQ+ people are challenged by access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART), legal obstacles, and psychosocial stress. However, less research has investigated how these disparities are contextualized by the geographic, social, and political environment of specific regions of the United States. Using semi-structured interviews with individuals living in North Carolina and Georgia, this research explores how stress and community support influence the family formation processes of LGBTQ+ individuals in the U.S. South over the past two decades. Participant interviews focus on three key groups: queer people currently planning a family, queer parents, and practitioners who are involved in queer family planning. Results shed light on the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals face when forming a family, including emotional stress, biological limitations, legal barriers, and social discrimination. Despite this, participants expressed that community support can mitigate some of the stress created by these obstacles. These results also suggest an increased need for cultural competency training in healthcare, more equitable insurance coverage for fertility care, and inclusive family laws.Bachelor of Art

Xylazine-Induced Respiratory Depression, Potential Additive Effects with Fentanyl, and Potential Treatments

    Get PDF
Fentanyl has become increasingly prevalent in the illicit drug supply, exacerbating the opioid overdose crisis. The recent emergence of xylazine has raised concerns of increased overdose risks associated with fentanyl—a potent synthetic opioid that induces severe respiratory depression. Xylazine, canonically known as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, may exacerbate respiratory depression and demonstrate resistance to naloxone–an opioid receptor antagonist–reversal due to its known pharmacology. This study examined the respiratory effects of fentanyl and xylazine in Swiss Webster mice using whole-body plethysmography. Dose-dependent respiratory depression was observed across measures, with higher doses exhibiting increased respiratory suppression. The combination of fentanyl and xylazine resulted in respiratory depression that was greater than either drug alone, particularly at higher combinatorial doses. Antagonist pretreatment experiments revealed that atipamezole, an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist, and its combination with naloxone significantly mitigated respiratory depression compared to naloxone alone, which had decreased efficacy in males. The combined antagonists, however, demonstrated slightly increased efficacy in males. These findings highlight the respiratory risks posed by fentanyl-xylazine combinations and emphasize the need for targeted harm reduction strategies, including the potential use of alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonists in overdose management.Bachelor of Scienc

Exploring emotions and perspectives of families with autism spectrum disorder individuals on sports participation: a case study on Weibo using machine learning method

    Get PDF
Background Physical activity is known to have numerous benefits for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Understanding family sentiments towards ASD sports participation is crucial for developing interventions that promote physical activity. This study aimed to explore the sentiments of families regarding sports participation for individuals with ASD using longitudinal data from Weibo, a popular Chinese social media platform. Objective This study investigates family sentiments and attitudes toward sports participation by ASD individuals, leveraging longitudinal data from Sina Weibo and machine learning–based sentiment analysis. Methods We collected Weibo posts containing the keyword “autism” from January 2020 to April 2023, filtered for sports‑related content, and divided the dataset into ten four‑month intervals. Using SnowNLP’s Naive Bayes–based sentiment classifier, we labeled each post as positive or negative and analyzed temporal trends. Results Positive sentiments toward sports participation far outnumbered negative sentiments, and the proportion of supportive posts increased steadily over the study period, reflecting growing recognition of sports’ role in enhancing well‑being and development among ASD individuals. Conclusion Families of ASD individuals increasingly acknowledge the multifaceted benefits of physical activity. These insights can guide the design of targeted interventions and inclusive sports programs, ultimately fostering greater participation and improving quality of life within the ASD community

Analyzing the Hanging Wall Displacement of the 2020 Sparta, North Carolina Earthquake

    Get PDF
On August 9, 2020, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Sparta, North Carolina produced the first documented surface rupture in the eastern United States. The NE–SW trending, southwest-dipping fault displays primarily dip-slip motion at the surface, though focal mechanism solutions indicate a significant left-lateral strike-slip component (Figueiredo et al. 2022,Wicks et. al 2022). At the surface, the fault has purely dip-slip motion, yet the earthquake focal mechanism indicates a component of left-lateral strike slip as well as dip-slip movement (Figueiredo et al 2022).   By comparing pre- and post-earthquake DEMs derived from LiDAR points collected in 2017 and 2020 respectively, I investigate patterns of lateral displacement within the hanging wall. My analysis, conducted in ArcGIS Pro, reveals a largely left-lateral strike-slip component that varies across the hanging wall, along with a concentration of vertical displacement near the fault trace. These findings suggest the presence of deformation domains bounded by subsidiary structures, though the limited dataset precludes precise delineation of these boundaries. However, several localized anomalies display displacement that deviates from expected left-lateral kinematics, indicative of heterogeneous deformation within the hanging wall. These anomalies highlight the complexity of rupture dynamics during this intraplate event.Bachelor of Art

Sympathy for the Rakshasa: Understanding Ambivalence Towards Ravana in South Asia

    Get PDF
Despite being told for at least 2,000 years, the Ramayana is still an incredibly significant narrative throughout South and Southeast Asia, playing a role in religious and ritual life as well as providing a source of secular entertainment. As a result, Ravana, the epic’s antagonist, is a well-known character across many cultures throughout the world. Not every group who knows of him regards him as a villain, however, and in this paper I seek to examine how and why different groups may view Ravana in a more complex, ambiguous, or even positive light. I explore the evolution of Rama’s villainy in “normative” Ramayanas before turning to recent Ramayanas which have reexamined his legacy. These “transgressive Ramayanas” from South India and Sri Lanka portray Ravana not as a rapacious beast, but as a wise and dignified warrior who rules a prosperous kingdom. The thinkers behind these transgressive Ramayanas have their own complex reasons for wanting to rethink Ravana’s portrayal, which vary significantly from 20th century South India to modern-day Sri Lanka, but in both cases illustrate the ways that narratives are intimately bound up with the identities and societies of those who tell them.Bachelor of Art
