    With more tourists researching and booking their travel entirely online, the use of social networking sites (SNSs) has gained popularity amongst both tourists and destination marketing organizations (DMOs). This study examined tourist photographs shared online via the image-based SNS of Pinterest in an effort to understand whether these types of new consumer technologies might be used by DMOs to better target potential visitors. Through visual analysis, the Pinterest photographs of four heritage tourist destinations were explored: Tombstone, Arizona; Virginia City, Nevada; Deadwood, South Dakota; and Dodge City, Kansas. Study findings provide discussion of Pinterest photographs, their visual representation of heritage tourist destinations, and the unique insights that an analysis of these photographs might offer to DMOs

    Structural Changes From Heating Amber and Copal as Observed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

    Structural changes caused by heating of fossilized (amber) and semifossilized (copal) resins have been examined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. A set of 28 samples was constituted to include different geographical sources, degrees of maturation, colors, and structural groupings. The onset of structural alterations was determined by observation of the lowest temperature at which spectral changes occurred. Both proton spectra in solution and carbon‐13? spectra in the solid state then were recorded of cooled samples after heating for 12 hr at temperature increments, until liquification of the sample began. The spectra of both nuclides exhibit loss of a few peaks, broadening of most peaks, and enhancement of the unsaturated or aromatic region at the expense of saturated resonances. Such changes are irreversible and lead to a harder and less soluble material on cooling. The changes parallel those that occur with maturation of fossil resins or materials that lead to coal

    Producing the Qualified: Resource Allocation for Lead Abatement in San Antonio

    Although the use of lead-based paint in residential buildings was banned in 1978, many aging buildings still contain hazardous lead content. Government systems have begun treating this environmental hazard as an issue of public health, organizing intervention according to measurable health indicators such as the blood lead level (BLL). As a result, public health norms organize and dictate who receives state assistance in removing lead from their home, constructing a specific demographic of “qualified” recipients of aid. Using qualitative interviews with residents and city officials, this thesis will analyze a local lead abatement program in San Antonio, Texas in order to evaluate how these categories of qualifications are constructed around dominant forms of public health intervention. I find that this production of the qualified translates the material issue of lead-based paint’s existence in structures into a project that is measurable on bodies and populations, making it more legible for a neoliberal system of resource allocation

    Curbing the Spread of Disinformation Through User Interface Design

    Solutions to the problem of the spread of disinformation have come from a variety of disciplines. However, little academic research has examined the whether or not the user interface design of social media platforms could affect the spread of disinformation. Drawing from research from the uses and gratifications paradigm and technological affordances, this study examines user behavior on three versions of a researcher-created news sharing social networking service, called The Hive. Findings were inconclusive about the modifications tested in this study but nevertheless revealed interesting patterns in user behavior. This project, by closely examining the relationship between user interface design and user behavior, sheds new light on the problem of disinformation by arguing that users can be prompted to be more active consumers of news through changes in the interface

    Investigating the Effects of Natural Environmental Factors on the Viability of Dye Tracer Testing

    Dye tracer tests that use granular activated carbon (GAC) to passively detect dyes in water flowing through wells, springs, and streams offer a semi-quantitative method of characterizing flow paths in karst aquifers. Because dye tracer testing is done in the field, there are many environmental factors that could impact the adsorption of dye to GAC. This study aims to investigate the kinetic properties of dye adsorption, determine whether or not naturally-occurring tannic acid affects the sorptive capacity of dye onto GAC, and measure the impact of pH upon dye adsorption onto GAC in a controlled lab setting using batch reactors and mixed flow reactors. Our results provide insight into the competitive adsorption that fluorescent dyes may experience in natural aquifer systems, thus putting quantitative constraints on processes that could inhibit dye adsorption and lead to false negatives in dye tracer tests. Results show that uranine dye adsorbs to GAC exponentially, following the first order rate law. GAC packets interacting with 20 ppm uranine dye are not susceptible to competitive adsorption with tannic acid, but more research needs to be conducted to determine if tannic acid can hinder concentrations near 500 ppb. Dye-water solutions with pH values near 4.5 have an inhibitory effect on adsorption due to the pH-dependent functional groups of both dye and GAC molecular structures. This research helps hydrogeologists working in karst environments understand some of the shortcomings of dye tracer testing in uncontrolled field environments

    Market Orientation and Performance: Industrial Supplier and Customer Perspectives

    Purpose This paper aims to contribute industrial marketing literature by examining the relationship between market orientation and performance based on multiple perspectives and measures. Although the relationship between market orientation and firm performance has been examined in prior research a gap in the literature exists, as this relationship has not been examined from separate perspectives of managers, salespersons and customers. In addition to this gap in the literature, a further gap exists as these multiple assessments of market orientation have not been examined relative to both subjective and objectives measures of industrial firm performance. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on data obtained from 111 sales branches of a Fortune 500 industrial supplier. Findings The results indicate that managers, salespersons and customers all indicate a positive relationship between market orientation and perceived performance. Market orientation and actual branch performance were not related when assessed by any of the three respondent groups. Only salespersons were able to significantly relate perceived firm performance to actual performance. Research limitations/implications These findings add a new dimensions to the existing stream of literature on the industrial marketing orientation and performance relationship.
