Metaphoric Recursiveness and Ternary Ontology: Another Look at the Language and Worldview of the Yaminahua
My purpose in this paper is, first, to explore metaphorical recursiveness in Yaminahua, i.e. the latter’s folding of the common binary structure: {(x) things + (y) words} into the threefold scheme: (A) things + (B) external analogies + (C) internal metaphors, as displaying a multi-iconic semiotic system of the type: A ≈ [B] ≈ C, which is finally reduced to a twofold indexical system: A ← [B], contra Graham Townsley’s dismissal of semiotic theory as being of no relevance in contrast to cognitive construction. And, secondly, to show that within the traditional Yaminahua worldview animism, totemism, and analogism, which Philippe Descola has famously described as alternative ontologies, not only coexist but also structurally intertwined in a complex ternary system supportive, on the one hand, of the basal binary logic characteristic of most Amazonian ontologies, and correlative, on the other hand, to the fourfold intersecting structure that has traditionally made possible the integration of all the Yaminahua people into the four dimensions of space, time, society, and the cosmos
Open-Ended Modeling Group Projects in Introductory Statics and Dynamics Courses
Traditionally, the types of problems that students see in their introductory statics and dynamics courses are well-structured textbook problems with a single solution [1]. These types of questions are often seen by students as being somewhat at-odds with the more “realistic” challenges that they may face in their design or lab courses. Additionally, in the pandemic-necessitated paradigm of emergency online instruction, methods of assessment beyond traditional exams have become more emphasized, both as a way of keeping students engaged by giving the material relevance and of ensuring that the work that they present is their own when so many solutions are available online
San Antonio, Listen Up: Utilizing Collective Intelligence to Inform Local Public Policy
Oftentimes, city residents, those most impacted by policy, are excluded from the policy-making process. Collective intelligence provides a theoretical framework that policy-makers can use to better incorporate residents’ voices into the policy-making process and to generate innovative policy solutions to address local issues. In this context, collective intelligence is the idea that when people from different backgrounds work together, they have the capacity to build something bigger and better. This project aims to showcase the potential of using collective intelligence in the policy-making process through a hypothetical case study of how it can be used to address the housing affordability crisis in San Antonio. By incorporating best practices identified in collective intelligence research, this case study serves as a feasible example of how collective intelligence can be put into practice within the context of San Antonio
Predicting Diabetes On Phenotype and Genotype using Neural Networks
Diabetes is a long-standing disease caused by high blood sugar over a long period of time and one in every ten Americans has diabetes. The neural networks have gained attention in large-scale genetic research because of its ability in non-linear relationships. However, the data imbalance problem, which is caused by the disproportion between the number of disease samples and the number of healthy samples, will decrease the prediction accuracy. In this project, we tackle the data imbalance problem when predicting diabetes with genotype SNP data and phenotype data provided by UK BioBank. The dataset is highly skewed with healthy samples with the ratio of 20. We build a phenotype neural network and a genotype neural network, which uses the sampling techniques to counter the data imbalance problem before feeding the data to the neural networks. We found out that the phenotype neural network outperforms the genotype neural network and achieves 90% accuracy. We reach the conclusion that undersampling performs better than oversampling to counter the data imbalance problem in our dataset and the phenotype is better than the genotype when predicting diabetes. We also discover the key phenotype and genotype features that contributed most to our model prediction
Woolf’s \u3cem\u3eAntigone\u3c/em\u3e: Modeling Antifascist Feminism Through a Tragic Lens
Virginia Woolf\u27s extensive education in Ancient Greek appears in her work through frequent reference to Greek tragedy, in both her novels and essays. Sophocles\u27 Antigone was particularly influential to her feminist political thought, and by reconstructing her reading of the play, the links between Woolf’s feminism and her antifascism become apparent. In Three Guineas, her reading of Antigone comes to the forefront as an analysis not only of patriarchal psychology, but also as a manifestation of tyranny also visible in the fascist regimes of her time. Many of the ideas in Three Guineas, especially the connection between Woolf’s antifascism and her feminism, are visible in her earlier novel, Mrs. Dalloway. As a site for Classical receptions of Antigone, Mrs. Dalloway narratively explores the key aspects of the play which would go on to heavily influence her argument for an intersectional antifascism in Three Guineas. By placing Woolf’s reading of Antigone in conversation with the contemporary reading given by Judith Butler, this thesis argues that Woolf’s vision diverges significantly from the tradition of feminist Antigone criticism, and thus offers a new foundation for reading Antigone primarily as an emotionally resonant text with potential for further intersectionality
Standardizing Olfactory Tests for the Common Marmoset (\u3cem\u3eCallithrix jacchus\u3c/em\u3e) Aging Model
Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) provides a long-term retrospective measure of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis activity, and is increasingly used to assess the life history, health and ecology of wild mammals. Given that sex, age, season and pregnancy influence HCC, and that it may indicate ongoing stress, we examined HCC in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) naturally inhabiting a hot and dry semi-desert like habitat, Caatinga, in northeastern Brazil. We trapped, measured, weighed, marked and collected shaved hair from the back of the neck of 61 wild marmosets during the wet and dry seasons. Using enzyme immunoassay, we found that HCC was higher in the dry season compared with the wet season among all age/sex classes. Females had significantly higher HCC than males, juveniles had higher HCC than adults, and reproductively active adult females and non-pregnant/non lactating adult females did not differ in HCC. There were no interaction effects of sex, age, group, or season on HCC. The magnitude of the effect of this extremely hot and dry environment (average yearly rainfall was only 271 mm) on HCC in common marmosets is difficult to ascertain as these animals are also experiencing a variety of other stressors. However, the elevated HCC seen in common marmosets during the 5–8 month dry season, suggests these primates face an extended period of heat, water and possibly nutritional stress, which appears to result in a high rate of juvenile mortality
