Exegesis in the Age of Extremism: The Future of Christianity and Literary Studies in Higher Education
This essay examines the consequences of the Trump presidency on the study of literature and Christianity. Despite the recent defunding of the humanities and the widespread elimination of religious studies departments, the Trump presidency gave rise to the widespread use of exegetical modes of interpretation, with many of the tenets of post-structuralism entering the cultural mainstream. How-ever, the interpretive failures of Trump supporters demonstrate the vital national importance of the humanities and the importance of formal literary and interpretive instruction
Problem-Solving by Total Productive Maintenance Swift Teams: Communication Network Structure, Media Choice and Team Effectiveness
Purpose: This study aims to look at the performance, communication structure and media choice for swift teams (STs) formed with the purpose of recovering from operational emergencies in manufacturing. The problem-solving process associated with these ad hoc teams include an early stage, where the main goal is to restore the process to working conditions, and a later stage, longer in duration, where the root cause of the problem is found and eliminated.
Design/methodology/approach: Based on field data from an industrial manufacturing operation, the authors test hypotheses by means of regression models.
Findings: It was found that in the evolution from early to later stage, media usage shifts from highly synchronous to asynchronous and the structural characteristics of the teams\u27 collaboration networks mutate as well. These effects are different when comparing high- vs low-performing teams.
Research limitations/implications: The study contains data for only one company, limiting the external validity of the conclusions. The sample was predominantly male. Participant attrition and other potential covariates not included in the study can be additional limitations.
Practical implications: More successful teams adapt their communication patterns more rapidly, going from an initially decentralized organization to a more centralized one. These changes in network patterns open a new view of ST’s success, based on network characteristics rather than on aggregate measures. The conclusions yield insights for interventions that may increase the success rates of these teams and reduce production line downtime.
Originality/value: The two stages in the operational emergency problem-solving process have to the authors’ knowledge not been addressed simultaneously in previous research, which is attempted in this paper as its main theoretical contribution. Moreover, previous studies dealing with ST’s success have only looked at aggregated measures impacting effectiveness and never to how their communication networks evolve along the path to problem resolution. The network view of the evolution of the ST from a relatively disorganized impromptu agglomeration of individuals to an effective problem-solving organization is to the authors’ knowledge first presented
Mind the Gap: Teaching Archival Silences in Digital Collections
This engaging case study describes a library instruction session held virtually for undergraduate students in an upper-level history course on US foreign relations. Working collaboratively, the special collections librarian and instruction librarian for history presented students with strategies for finding and evaluating digital primary sources for their research papers. Students were introduced to the role the curatorial process plays in the creation of digital collections. The instructors highlighted that such collections frequently contain only a portion of the materials in a full archival collection as well as the role of curatorial bias: digital collections often reflect the prejudices and interests of the person who selected the materials to be digitized. In some cases, this can mean less material in digital collections from underrepresented groups, hence the need to mind the gap
Plant Scale and the Anthropocene
In this chapter, I study narratives making visible in startling and subversive ways the life-producing photosynthetic vegetal power that has always fed us and our companion species, provided all land-based breathers with oxygen and altered the planet\u27s climate and ecosystems. Plants have enabled our current ecological circumstances, and we are dismantling them experimentally, blindly even. While human actions are changing the world\u27s biosphere, we gain insights (and horror) when we understand these actions in terms of a multispecies-justice agenda from within the florosphere, to coin a term describing the systems of water, air, weather and life created and altered by plants from the depths of the oceans to the atmosphere\u27s gases. This critical plant studies chapter, guided by Robin Wall Kimmerer\u27s Braiding Sweetgrass, presents the florosphere with studies of the burned Linden trees in Goethe\u27s Faust, who is blinded at the end of the play, and of Sue Burke\u27s 2018 science-fiction novel Semiosis that takes place on a distant, vegetal-dominated planet. Learning to see plants is the challenge let us here consider a vegetal scale as the base reference point for all other scales of the Anthropocene
Scaffold-Based [Fe]-Hydrogenase Model: H\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e Activation Initiates Fe(0)-Hydride Extrusion and Non-Biomimetic Hydride Transfer
We report the synthesis and reactivity of a model of [Fe]-hydrogenase derived from an anthracene-based scaffold that includes the endogenous, organometallic acyl(methylene) donor. In comparison to other non-scaffolded acyl-containing complexes, the complex described herein retains molecularly well-defined chemistry upon addition of multiple equivalents of exogenous base. Clean deprotonation of the acyl(methylene) C-H bond with a phenolate base results in the formation of a dimeric motif that contains a new Fe-C(methine) bond resulting from coordination of the deprotonated methylene unit to an adjacent iron center. This effective second carbanion in the ligand framework was demonstrated to drive heterolytic H2 activation across the Fe(ii) center. However, this process results in reductive elimination and liberation of the ligand to extrude a lower-valent Fe-carbonyl complex. Through a series of isotopic labelling experiments, structural characterization (XRD, XAS), and spectroscopic characterization (IR, NMR, EXAFS), a mechanistic pathway is presented for H2/hydride-induced loss of the organometallic acyl unit (i.e. pyCH2-CO → pyCH3+CO). The known reduced hydride species [HFe(CO)4]– and [HFe3(CO)11]– have been observed as products by 1H/2H NMR and IR spectroscopies, as well as independent syntheses of PNP[HFe(CO)4]. The former species (i.e. [HFe(CO)4]–) is deduced to be the actual hydride transfer agent in the hydride transfer reaction (nominally catalyzed by the title compound) to a biomimetic substrate ([TolIm](BArF) = fluorinated imidazolium as hydride acceptor). This work provides mechanistic insight into the reasons for lack of functional biomimetic behavior (hydride transfer) in acyl(methylene)pyridine based mimics of [Fe]-hydrogenase

Biogeography and Comparative Phylogeography of New-World Crocodylians
Biogeography is an area of study dedicated to understanding the evolutionary processes that resulted in current organismal distribution patterns. In general, exclusively terrestrial and exclusively aquatic vertebrates have well-studied and defined biogeographic patterns in the New World, but the biogeography of semiaquatic organisms is still poorly understood. In this chapter we discuss the biogeographic patterns and processes of New-World crocodylians. Although dispersal was probably an important process for the diversification of the ancestors of this group, the species/lineages—especially those of the South Americans—have their geographic distributions delimited by natural geographical barriers such as watershed divides, waterfalls and rapids, and captured watersheds, but also ecological specialization and competitive exclusions. The species/lineages occupying these areas show nearly identical divergence times, pointing to common historical processes that drove the evolution and divergence of these species/lineages. Recent studies have shown that widely distributed species have diversified into a significant number of independent evolutionary lineages. Knowing the biogeographic patterns of this group is of fundamental importance for conservation, since in the Anthropocene the effects of changes caused by man are devastating, destroying in a short period of time what nature took thousands/millions of years to build
Protein Models on Demand in Virtual Reality
Protein visualization is a valuable tool that aids in both scientific research and education. A protein’s structure determines its function, so a model of the physical structure of a protein is useful to fully understand its purpose. Many fields rely on understanding protein function, from drug discovery to generating electricity out of ambient humidity. Most protein modeling software such as Jmol, UCSF Chimera, and Foldit are used on two-dimensional monitors. Two-dimensional displays of three-dimensional objects have several limitations, the major of which is that they lack information on model depth. To get accurate insight into the shape of proteins, and therefore to their function, a three-dimensional display is necessary. Virtual reality (VR) provides an interface where this is possible. VR can provide a three-dimensional view of models, offering researchers and students something they could not achieve before: a holistic view of protein models. With VR technologies becoming more prevalent in research and education, VR viewing and manipulating of protein models is a natural next step in understanding proteins. Identifying Incident Casual Factors to Improve Aviation Transportation Safety: Proposing a Deep Learning Approach
Aviation is a complicated transportation system, and safety is of paramount importance because aircraft failure often involves casualties. Prevention is clearly the best strategy for aviation transportation safety. Learning from past incident data to prevent potential accidents from happening has proved to be a successful approach. To prevent potential safety hazards and make effective prevention plans, aviation safety experts identify primary and contributing factors from incident reports. However, safety experts’ review processes have become prohibitively expensive nowadays. The number of incident reports is increasing rapidly due to the acceleration of advances in information technologies and the growth of the commercial and private aviation transportation industries. Consequently, advanced text mining algorithms should be applied to help aviation safety experts facilitate the process of incident data extraction. This paper focuses on constructing deep-learning-based models to identify causal factors from incident reports. First, we prepare the data sets used for training, validation, and testing with approximately 200,000 qualified incident reports from the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS). Then, we take an open-source natural language model, which is well trained with a large corpus of Wikipedia texts, as the baseline and fine-tune it with the texts in incident reports to make it more suited to our specific research task. Finally, we build and train an attention-based long short-term memory (LSTM) model to identify primary and contributing factors in each incident report. The solution we propose has multilabel capability and is automated and customizable, and it is more accurate and adaptable than traditional machine learning methods in extant research.
