    Desire and the Work it Does: Alterity and Exogamy in a Kotiria Origin Myth from the Northwest Amazon of Brazil

    In terms of the pan-Amazonian social paradigm that transforms affines into kin and assimilates them into the consanguineal unit, Eastern Tukanoans must be regarded as exceptional. This paper explores a foundation myth that allows us to better understand relations of self and Other, incest and exogamy, and violence and amity among the Eastern Tukanoan-speaking Kotiria. The narrative provides a heretofore-absent foundation for Tukanoan affinity, revealing complications and nuance in Kotiria notions of alterity and the generative role of Desire in its transformation. It is a synthesis not from nature, but from poesis; not from trust, but from theft; not from consensual amity, but from violence

    Summer Study Abroad in Japan: Maximizing Intercultural Competency Development Through Self-Guided Cultural Exploration and Reflection Tasks

    This study analyzes how self-guided cultural exploration and reflection (SCER) tasks affect the development of intercultural competency (ICC) of students participating in a study abroad program. The Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) was used to measure students\u27 ICC development before and after a 6-week faculty-led study abroad program in Japan. The SCER tasks encouraged students to examine Japanese history, cuisine, politics, architecture, economy, communication style, and behaviors, and gain a sophisticated understanding of the Japanese culture through the lens of unique Japanese perspectives. The results reveal significant gains in overall IES scales, in particular, student\u27s continuous learning and interpersonal engagement saw the most change. Analysis of student reflections further demonstrates the positive impact of culturally bridging experiences on self-awareness and cultural exploration. We argue that the impact of perspective-shifting practices, combined with students\u27 first-hand intercultural experience improves student\u27s level of hardiness. Finally, student reflections reveal the important role that the SCER tasks have on initiating a meaningful dialogue with their host families

    Shakespeare, Universality, and High-Profile Legal Proceedings: The Case of \u3cem\u3eOthello\u3c/em\u3e and O.J. Simpson

    There is a strange phenomenon within the legal world where high-profile legal proceedings are often placed in comparison to Shakespeare’s works. This phenomenon, though present within many legal events, is exemplified in the analogy made between the O.J. Simpson trial and Othello. Be they sparked by attorneys, the media, or civilian onlookers, the comparisons made between O.J. and Othello’s experiences are plentiful. Many individuals who bridge connections between the two, however, are quick to deny anything racial about them. Rather, they instead suggest that the experiences of the character and former athlete are indicative of universal themes such as jealousy. Though both the play and the trial involve a variety of factors, to suggest that race is not one of them is startling and prompts many questions. What does “universality” truly mean, and who benefits from it? How is Shakespeare’s status as a cultural figurehead harmful when he is introduced into the courtroom? Who does it marginalize? What does denying the importance of race in Othello and the Simpson trial do, and what does it suggest? Through unpacking the famous connection, this article aims to both critique this comparison and to make sense of it so that the implications of bringing Shakespeare into the legal realm can be understood

    Ablation of Tight Junction ZO-1 in Epithelial Cells

    The goal of this study was to create, isolate, and analyze a cell line of epithelial cells lacking the tight junction protein, ZO-1. The central hypothesis was that ZO-1 plays notable roles in permeability and proliferation and ZO-1 interaction with the actin cytoskeleton has a role in the regulation of cell membrane tension. The study developed ZO-1 null MDCK cell lines using CRISPR/Cas9 ribonucleoprotein complex. Additionally, the study examined phenotypic differences in wildtype (WT) and knockout (KO) cell lines by measuring protein expression as well as protein localization. Barrier properties were analyzed in WT and KO cell lines. Nuclear density in ZO-1 ablated cells was compared to WT using immunofluorescent staining and ImageJ macros. To study the relationship between altered cytoskeleton and loss of ZO-1 the study measured membrane tension using a fluorescent probe and FLIM analysis to evaluate mechanical properties in WT and KO cells. Cells lacking ZO-1 appear to be more nuclear dense, accumulate apical actin, have an increased cell height, and exhibit a higher membrane tension than their wild type counterparts. Notably, the increased membrane tension cause has not yet been determined but could have relation to the increased cell density or the increased apical actin noted in our knockout studies. The creation and isolation of a ZO-1 knockout line provides a basis for further studies into the specific functions of various domains and residues of ZO-1

    Ultracold Akali Collisions

    The nature of the interaction between ultracold atoms is sensitive to their internuclear separation distance r. When the collision partners are far apart, they are regarded as non-interacting and the state of the system is characterized by the internal degrees of the freedom of the individual atoms, namely their respective electronic and nuclear spins. However, as r begins to diminish, the atoms start to feel a weak attractive force represented by a sum of van der Waals terms with interaction energies on the order of 10−6 Hartree. This attractive force grows stronger as the particles continue to move towards each other, with associated interaction energies approaching ∼ 10−2 Hartree, until r reaches a point re, beyond which the atoms experience a strong repulsive force because the two cannot physically be on top of each other. Quantum defect theory (QDT) lends itself to calculations involving such systems because it exploits the natural separation of length and energy scales outlined above. In the simplest QDT approximation, two constants with respect to both field and energy, the singlet and triplet quantum defects, fully describe the short-range properties of the collision. These parameters are used to approximate the short-range reaction matrix Ksr with a frame transformation (FT) formula. In the long-range region, a collection of quantities that are smooth in energy and field characterize the physics. Moreover, at low collision energies, these long-range parameters behave as simple, analytic functions of energy to a good approximation. With the long-range parameters and Ksr in hand, the real properties of the atomic system, such as elastic cross sections, can be tabulated in a relatively few easy steps. We used this FT approximation to describe elastic s-wave collisions of 6Li, 7Li, 23Na, 39K and 87Rb atoms in which the particles enter and exit the lowest-lying interaction channel. For each, we calculated the elastic cross section as a function of magnetic field, finding that our FT method is able to reproduce the resonance features of a full coupled channels (FCC) calculation for systems where the hyperfine/Zeeman splitting of the collision channels is negligible in the area where the short- and long-range regions overlap

    Female Directors: Why are Some Less Informed Than Others?

    We find the limited supply of female directors, rather than gender differences or boardroom biases, can create an informational disadvantage for some female independent directors, as measured by their open market trading profits. The information disparity is largely isolated to firms with abnormally low representation by female directors. Female independent directors who are located further away from the company\u27s headquarters, have less industry experience or have shorter tenure exhibit the most limited information access. Accounting for these obstacles reduces the gender disparity in information. We further find that this information disparity among female independent directors contributes to the variation in their influence on board monitoring. More informed female independent directors are associated with fewer restatements, lower abnormal CEO compensation and higher Tobin\u27s Q. Our results have several policy implications

    Variability in Groundwater Flow and Chemistry in the Mekong River Alluvial Aquifer (Thailand): Implications for Arsenic and Manganese Occurrence

    Arsenic (As) is widespread in alluvial aquifers along rivers draining the Himalayas but has received little attention along the Mekong River upstream of its delta. This study investigates linkages among groundwater recharge, flow, chemistry, and river stage at two sites along the Mekong River in northeast Thailand. Hydraulic head and chemistry were monitored in January and June 2014. In addition, hydraulic head and electrical conductivity were continuously logged at one site from January 2014 to March 2015. During the dry season, groundwater tends to flow toward the river, and saline water from shallow evaporites can intrude the alluvial aquifer. As stage rises, hydraulic-gradient reversals can result in groundwater-river water mixing, thereby promoting geochemical disequilibrium. Groundwater chemistry reflects silicate, carbonate, and evaporite weathering; multiple redox reactions; and spatial and temporal variability in recharge. Concentrations of As and manganese (Mn) in groundwater exceeded drinking-water guidelines by as much as an order of magnitude. Results suggest As is mobilized in groundwater by reduction of ferric (oxyhydr)oxides, consistent with the findings elsewhere in South and Southeast Asia. Upwelling of saline water can increase the solubility of (oxyhydr)oxide phases that sequester Mn and As, can complex Mn and can mobilize adsorbed As oxyanions. Conversely, influxes of oxic river water could promote (oxyhydr)oxide precipitation
