The Villas Boas Brothers and Anthropologists
This paper describes the history of the Villas Boas brothers of Brazil and their role in establishing and administering the 26,000-square-kilometer Xingu Indigenous Park in the Amazonian state of Mato Grosso. Many anthropologists came to work in the Park during the Villas Boas brothers’ decades-long residence there. The paper details some of the unique features of the Park that shaped fieldwork conditions and describes the relations between anthropologists and the brothers. Despite some skeptics, the great majority of anthropologists expressed a positive assessment of the brothers’ work. The article includes an appendix listing the anthropologists who worked in the Park and the dates of their research

The Availability of Training Opportunities in Personality Disorders in American Psychological Association- and Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System-Accredited Clinical and Counseling Psychology Doctoral Programs
Personality disorders are relatively common, especially in clinical settings. A number of evidence-based treatments are now available, especially for borderline personality disorder. However, little is known about the relevant training available to doctoral students in clinical and counseling psychology. in the current study, data were extracted from 336 clinical and counseling Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs from the Insider’s Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology (Norcross & Sayette, 2020), including the number of programs with faculty with specific interests in personality disorders and the number of programs with clinical opportunities related to personality disorders. We found that formal training in personality disorders is not widely available to most trainees in APA-accredited doctoral training programs. Only 16% of programs have faculty with interests in personality disorders, all of them clinical psychology programs. Ph.D. programs were more likely to have PD-interested faculty than Psy.D. programs, and, within clinical Ph.D. programs, PCSAS-accredited programs were more likely to have PD-interested faculty than programs without PCSAS accreditation. Similarly, only 15% of programs (all clinical psychology programs) offer practicum opportunities in psychotherapy for personality disorders. Our findings indicate that doctoral level psychology programs are not sufficiently preparing their students with personality disorder training, which serves as a substantial disservice to both trainees and the public
Constraining the Dark Matter in the Galaxy Lensing Quasar PG1115+080
I present a microlensing analysis of 9 Chandra observations of the quadruply lensed quasar PG1115+080. Determinations of the microlensing effects in the lensing galaxy are carried out by finding the X-ray flux measurements of the individual quasar images via two-dimensional image fitting and spectral fitting. The results give an estimation of the local fraction of stellar matter making up the total integrated mass along the line of sight at an impact parameter of ~6 kpc. A Bayesian analysis of microlensing maps and the measured X-ray flux of each image gives a most likely local stellar fraction of 4.64%, with the other 95.36% in a smooth, dark matter component

This paper is a digital ethnography of the discourse surrounding socialist/anarchist poetry and poetics on Twitter, with the aims of exploring ideas of social media spaces as a networked public or counterpublic (Warner 2002). I study the creation of a groupchat in late 2019 on literary Twitter devoted to anti-publishing, or a concerted critique of the ideas of editorship and publishing in print, focusing both on the role of social connections within this space, and the ways in which the public\u27s inherent stranger sociability, or the ability of various actors to participate in the discourse, eventually split up the groupchat along ideological lines
The Effect of Acute Cocaine Exposure on NMDA Receptor Subunits in Pedunculopontine Nucleus to Substantia Nigra Pars Compacta Synapses
The substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) is implicated in cocaine addiction due to increased NMDA receptor-mediated current found after acute cocaine exposure. The present study seeks to determine if this increase is driven by a subunit change that decreases magnesium blockage of the receptor and thus increases current. To test this, NMDA receptor-mediated current was isolated and recorded at holding voltages from -80 mV to +40 mV. It was found that at negative holding voltages, NMDA receptors conduct more current, potentially indicating that a subunit change occurs. However, more data collection will be needed to affirm these results. Continued support of a subunit change hypothesis would give researchers more knowledge on the cellular mechanisms of early-stage cocaine addiction, and provide guidance when investigating potential treatment options
A Modeling Study of the Mobilization and Sequestration of Trace Metals in a Crude-Oil-Contaminated Aquifer
Using a reactive transport model, I simulated the mobilization and sequestration of geogenic trace metals, nickel (Ni2+) and cobalt (Co2+), in a crude-oil-contaminated aquifer. These trace metals can pose threats to human and ecological health and are not commonly regulated or measured at oil-spill sites, making it important to characterize the geochemical mechanisms that release and attenuate potentially toxic trace metals. In the groundwater-contaminant plume, crude-oil is biodegraded coupled to iron (Fe(III)) reduction and methanogenesis. Previously collected field data1 showed concentrations of Ni2+, and Co2+ near the crude-oil source were elevated in groundwater and depleted from aquifer sediments compared to background concentrations. Roughly 80 meters downgradient, in the active Fe(III)-reducing zone, groundwater concentrations of Ni2+ and Co2+ decrease, relative to near the crude-oil body, and concentrations in sediment increase above background levels. Using a reactive transport model, I show that Ni2+ and Co2+ originally sorbed to Fe(III) are released from sediments near the oil body due to microbially mediated Fe(III)-reduction to aqueous Fe2+. Biodegradation in the active Fe(III)-reducing zone, dissolves Fe2+ and produces bicarbonate, causing groundwater supersaturation with respect to siderite (FeCO3), allowing FeCO3 to precipitate. I developed a surface complexation model for Ni2+ and Co2+ on FeCO3, to incorporate into our reactive transport model framework. Our modeling results showed that FeCO3 generates negative surface charge in the pH range measured in the contaminant plume (6.3-7.3), allowing FeCO3 to sorb Ni2+ and Co2+ and remove them from groundwater. Our modeling results were consistent with field observations. Previous sampling has shown that arsenic (As), which also is mobilized due to Fe(III) reduction, does not accumulate in Fe-reducing sediments like Ni2+ and Co2+. The negative surface charge on FeCO3 favors sorption of cations (Ni2+ and Co2+) but not the (oxy)anions of As. Our model effectively delineated mechanisms that could release and attenuate trace metals at oil-spill sites, which can aid in more comprehensive predictions of threats to human and ecological health in aquifers contaminated by crude-oil
Justifying Violence: Discourses about Homelessness in San Antonio during the COVID-19 Pandemic
In my analysis, I show that social power (proximity to policy change) is the most important determinant of how those involved in this research thought about homelessness and the resources needed to address the unhoused community’s experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic. Those closest to high levels of social power demonstrate discourses of hierarchy of trauma and control most often to justify their actions. Those with low levels of social power invoked the superhero discourse. Most notably both groups exhibit benign neglect to explain the response (or lack of response) in aiding unhoused people during the pandemic. Though the discourses are different, all roads lead to the assumption that the unhoused community is well-served and unscathed in the pandemic. As described in the data, this assumption is very likely untrue. This analysis illuminates how discourses about homelessness allowed my informants to justify the inadequate resources available to unhoused people during the pandemic, relinquishing them of their responsibility to support all community members
Numerical Simulations of Density Waves in Saturn’s A-Ring
In this work, we report on the use of a local cell N-body simulation method to model density waves in Saturn\u27s A-ring. Specifically, we focus on waves excited at the 31-30 Inner Lindblad Resonance with Prometheus. We find that the local cell qualitatively matches larger cells in the formation process but is able to run more quickly and at higher resolution. The density waves that form in the local cell return theoretical surface density predictions (σ0 = 46.51 g/cm2) within 4% of the parameter value of 45.0 g/cm2. Additional simulations run without particle self-gravity do not result in the formation of density waves, confirming that the waves are not a product of the cell or boundary conditions used. In the sudden absence of the moon, our simulations suggest that a fully formed density wave decays almost completely on the timescale of 1-2 years. However, a region of higher density appears to persist just outside the resonance location. Finally, by decreasing particle radius from 8.4m to 2.6m we were able to observe the formation of straw between wave peaks. Photometric renderings of these simulations show qualitative agreement with Cassini images
Effects of Customer Horizontal Merger on Supplier Capital Structure Decisions
We study the impact of a significant customer\u27s merger on the capital structure of suppliers using a sample of U.S. firms that merged with rivals in the same industry. The bargaining power theory of capital structure predicts that suppliers will increase debt to decrease the surplus available for negotiation when facing customers that gain buying power by increasing their size through mergers. We find that suppliers increase their financial leverage after the effective date of their customer\u27s merger. This increase is economically significant, permanent, and unrelated to supplier merger activity. We also find that greater concentration in the supplier\u27s industry and higher supplier market power are associated with lower increases in supplier\u27s leverage. Overall, the empirical evidence is consistent with suppliers increasing their financial leverage to fortify their bargaining power
