    Increasing Globalisation in Accounting Publications

    The globalisation movement has greatly affected accounting practice but also academic accounting. Authors at the US universities have historically been major contributors to accounting academic research. An increasing percentage of contributors now come from other countries, such as Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and others. This study examines representation of the US and non-US universities in six very highly ranked accounting journals over a 26-year period. Findings show that the average percentages of articles with non-US university representation vary across journals from the lowest, 15.34%, in The Accounting Review (TAR) to the highest, 64.12%, in Accounting, Organizations and Society (AOS). This study reveals that the force of globalisation is affecting accounting research and the publication landscape. These changes could help broaden perspectives and enrich understanding of accounting issues and accounting knowledge, thereby benefiting both scholarship and practice

    Consideration for Scaffolding Open-Ended Engineering Problems: Instructor Reflections After Three Years

    This full research-to-practice paper is a collaboration between researchers and instructors to examine the scaffolding of open-ended problems. Most assigned homework problems are closed-ended with one correct answer and are unlike the ill-defined problems practicing engineers solve in the workplace. To begin bridging this gap, our research team of engineering education researchers and instructors have been designing and implementing ill-defined, open-ended homework problems for the past three years. This study presents instructor reflections on considerations for scaffolding open-ended problems, made after examining survey data from their own students. We present the results in six practices of scaffolding that better support students in their solving of the problems

    Transcending Ball and Ballin\u27: Connecting the Jordan Brand and College Football Fans

    Michael Jordan is considered by many to be not only the greatest basketball player, but also the greatest athlete of all time. Fans, sports analysts, and former and current players profess feelings of awe when recollecting his elite performance on the basketball court and when discussing his mystique off the court. Air Jordan, the brand bearing Jordan’s name, image, and likeness, is one of Nike’s most successful business units, and yet has received very little attention in the existing literature. Recently, the athletic departments of four large Division I universities have attempted to leverage the connection between Air Jordan and fans’ emotional responses to Jordan the athlete by branding their athletic apparel with Jordan Brand’s Jumpman logo. The present research evaluates this partnership in an attempt to determine the extent to which the emotional responses elicited by the brand of a storied athlete can influence the behavior of stakeholders of other organizations, such as fans of university athletic programs. We collect data from attendees of football games at two partner universities, gauging the strength of their emotional response to the Jordan Brand-university partnership and their propensity to engage in behaviors such as purchasing merchandise, attending games in the future, and donating to the university as a result of the partnership. The findings support the notion that the Jordan Brand partnership elicits strong emotional responses from fans and can influence their behavior in both purchasing and non-purchasing contexts. This supports the expansion of similar partnerships between large organizations and powerful brands

    Creativity as a Reflective Learning Exercise: Informing Strategic Marketing Decisions Through Digital Storytelling

    As educators we strive to facilitate knowledge and ways of learning that serve students throughout their lives, but we also recognize their sometimes short retention span. The innovation we present in this article consists of the use of digital storytelling as a conduit for students to construct a narrative of their experience in a marketing simulation throughout the semester. We explain the innovation’s implementation as well as the results observed throughout the years in the digital stories developed by students. Finally, we discuss further applications of this innovation in other courses and future research avenues

    The Dual Axis Contingency Continuum: A Framework for Understanding Crisis Communication in Context with Digital Social Justice Advocacy

    In the summer of 2020, the intersection between crisis communication and social justice activism grew as companies responded to the murder of George Floyd, and the call for support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The goal of this project was to understand the new and unique role social media has played in the relationship between public relations and social justice, and how that presented itself in the Black Lives Matter Movement of June 2020. The contingency theory of public relations was the most applicable model to understand and represent the public relations response to the Black Lives Matter movement. To judge the model and see if the contingency continuum was still the best model for analyzing companies’ crisis communication plans, responses were collected from major American corporations, categorized by trends in the responses to the BLM protests, and then compared to the existing framework, the contingency continuum, in order to look for discrepancies. While some aspects of the original model seemed accurate, it did not fully describe the behavior presented in the data collected on company responses. The new dual-axis contingency continuum was created to both mitigate the problems with the continuum and better represent the communication environment and strategies present in the time period studied. Examples of company responses used in the project are highlighted at the end of the paper to exemplify how the new model categorizes them as compared to the old model

    Does Testosterone Facilitate Dynamic Relationships in Lizard Behavior, Morphology, and Physiology?

    Testosterone regulates a wide variety of sexual and social behaviors, but the extent to which variation in muscle physiology facilitates these behaviors is not clear. We investigated the effects of testosterone on the morphology, physiology, and behavioral use of two muscles in green anole (Anolis carolinensis) and brown anole (A. sagrei) lizards. We examined the ceratohyoid (CH), the muscle that moves the throat fan called the dewlap in social display, and the retractor penis magnus (RPM), a muscle that moves the hemipenes during copulation. We assigned males of each species to one of three treatment groups: high T males were gonadectomied and received a testosterone implant; low T males were gonadectomied and received a blank implant; and control males underwent sham surgery, where their testes were left intact, and they received a blank implant. We found that testosterone regulates behaviors and the muscles underlying them in a complex manner. Before surgery, males assigned to these groups did not differ in morphology or behavior. Six weeks after hormone manipulation, high T males displayed their dewlaps more frequently than low T males, but testosterone did not affect dewlap or CH morphology. However, testosterone did increase the size of both the copulatory hemipenes and RPM. We also found that testosterone regulates dewlap and push-bob behaviors in a context-specific fashion (aggressive male-male contexts vs. sexual male-female contexts), and this pattern was similar across the green and brown anole. Overall, the role of testosterone in mechanisms underlying social behaviors appears to vary among muscles, yet remains consistent between species

    Mabee Waste Solution Final Project Report

    Food waste is typically sent to landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane into the environment, causing a serious pollution issue. Mabee Dining Hall’s previous solution to this problem, the Earth Tub Composting Tank, became inoperative after 11 years of service. The team was tasked with developing an alternative solution. Based on the constraints imposed by the location and the project sponsor’s stipulations, such as low odor emission and ease of use, the team decided that the solution would consist of an in-vessel composting system. The container, a 6-gallon HDPE tank, is set up in a horizontal configuration suspended by two A-frames and an internal rod with aeration spikes. These aeration spikes prevent the process from going anaerobic and thus minimizing the odor produced in the composting process. During the development of the prototype, the team conducted a series of empirical tests to determine, (1) the ideal amount and type of bulking agents that would allow the pre-consumer food waste to compost within a four to six week time frame, and (2) to identify the degree to which aeration affects overall composting time and the odor produced by the pile. All tests were performed under a controlled environment in two fume hoods provided by Dr. Hunsicker-Wang and Dr. Uddin. The results suggested that, among the tested food waste to bulking agents, the most effective ratio with regards to fastest composting time and least odor production is 4:1:2 (food waste:hay:wood shavings). Additionally, the aeration test demonstrated that when the pile is properly aerated, the smell of the compost pile is negligible. Throughout the duration of the project, the team was able to suggest a composting method based on the limiting factors of Trinity University campus, recommend the type and amount of bulking agents that would satisfy ideal conditions of the composting process, create a CAD drawing and an instruction manual, and construct a physical prototype. However, due to delays caused by COVID-19 and the winter storm, several aspects of the project had to be modified. As a result, the team developed a smaller-scale prototype than initially stipulated, and did not get to test it after its completion. However, several recommendations and improvements have been determined using the empirical tests presented in this report. During the empirical tests, the team failed to obtain suitable compost within the predicted four to six week time frame. The reason for this could be that the sizes of the piles were small (3.5 total pounds of food waste and bulking agents), which affects the ability of the microbes to retain heat. To accommodate this realization, the team added insulation around the pails mid-test. However, the team suspects that too much time had already passed and the majority of the microbes had died. Thus, one of the team’s proposals is that the Composting Time Test and the Aeration Test be repeated with insulation added on day one to ensure that the piles are able to complete the composting process without heat loss. Additionally, testing the actual prototype to analyze the results and make the pertaining modifications would be an important improvement

    Discrete Dynamics of Dynamic Neural Fields

    Large and small cortexes of the brain are known to contain vast amounts of neurons that interact with one another. They thus form a continuum of active neural networks whose dynamics are yet to be fully understood. One way to model these activities is to use dynamic neural fields which are mathematical models that approximately describe the behavior of these congregations of neurons. These models have been used in neuroinformatics, neuroscience, robotics, and network analysis to understand not only brain functions or brain diseases, but also learning and brain plasticity. In their theoretical forms, they are given as ordinary or partial differential equations with or without diffusion. Many of their mathematical properties are still under-studied. In this paper, we propose to analyze discrete versions dynamic neural fields based on nearly exact discretization schemes techniques. In particular, we will discuss conditions for the stability of nontrivial solutions of these models, based on various types of kernels and corresponding parameters. Monte Carlo simulations are given for illustration
