Bachelor Sketches Invisible Women in Irving’s Domestic Writings
This essay examines Washington Irving’s domestic writings of the 1820s, and it argues that Irving devised the sketch as the literary genre of bachelorhood. In lavish, detailed sketches of numerous homes, Irving created a literary counterpart of the still life, but the effect of these sketches depended on the excision of women’s domestic labor and the portrayal of the home in a state of static readiness, with all housework already completed. Irving’s tales, however, often depict women’s hidden domestic activities and show the invisible labors that underlie his sketches. These tales, however, portray women’s housework as a source of terror, and they provide an implicit explanation for his sketches’ omissions. The home in Irving’s writings is an appealing aesthetic spectacle, but it poses grave danger to the unwitting bachelor, and Irving suggests that it is better to remain detached and unsettled than to risk the perils of heterosexual intimacy
Do Patient Engagement IT Functionalities Influence Patient Safety Outcomes? A Study of US Hospitals
OBJECTIVE: Patient engagement using health information technology (IT) functionalities can be a powerful tool in managing their own care for better health outcomes. Therefore, this study explores whether patient engagement IT functionalities and electronic health record (EHR) can affect patient safety outcomes.
DESIGN: Using longitudinal study design for general acute care hospitals within the United States, we examine the interaction effects of EHR and patient engagement IT functionalities on patient safety outcomes (adverse incident rate) using a generalized estimating equation.
SETTING: Our national sample consisted of 9759 hospital-year observations from 2014 to 2018. Overall, we found a significant association between adverse incident rate and patient engagement level and EHR adoption level.
RESULTS: On average, as the combined effects of patient engagement level and EHR adoption level increases, the adverse incident rate decreases by approximately 0.49 (P \u3c .01). Incorporating patient engagement functionalities is becoming an essential tool to improve health outcomes and will play an instrumental role in meeting meaningful use standards.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides insights into the potential synergy between a hospital\u27s existing EHR maturity and patient engagement health IT functionalities in affecting organizational performance. Organizational culture and capabilities pertinent to adopting patient engagement health IT functionalities infrastructure should be established first to provide the impetus for this synergy
The Trends and Determinants of Board Gender and Age Diversities
We investigate trends and determinants of board gender and age diversities using a sample of 8,590 firms for 20 years. Gender diversity and the average age of boards increased, while age diversity decreased in this period. We find that larger, older firms tend to have more gender diversity but less age diversity. More board independence is related to higher gender diversity, while more firm complexity is associated with less age diversity. For younger (older) boards, more female directors are associated with less (more) age diversity. We also find that female directors in older boards generate value for the firm
Adam Smith and Economic Development in Theory and Practice: A Rejection of the Stadial Model?
Adam Smith allegedly offers a model of economic development in both his Lectures on Jurisprudence and the Wealth of Nations - the so-called four stages of development model. The model presents a linear unfolding view of economic development from primitive to advanced stages. But Smith\u27s own historical examples systematically contradict this model. I thus question whether Adam Smith actually endorses and uses the four stages model of development to illustrate development and suggest that if he does, he does it to discredit it instead. For Smith, history teaches that development is more accidental than fitting deterministic models
Solar Panel Sun-Tracking System for Home Use Final Project Report
Team 2 of the Sun-Tracking Solar Panels for Home Use seeks to design a residential solar panel system that has the ability to track the sun. The main objectives of this project are to design and construct a sun-tracking solar panel system that is able to maximize the amount of sunlight captured throughout a day. The following report covers the features of our complete design and its three subsystems that combine to accomplish the requirements of the sun-tracking system. The primary functions of the three subsystems are as follows: the sun-tracking sensor will read photoresistor values that determine whether the solar panel’s angle should be adjusted, the mechanical movement device will adjust the angle of the solar panel, and the electric circuit and control system will make the determination as to whether the solar panel should be shifted and by how much. Following the design overview is an evaluation of the final design through the scope of project requirements and constraints, as well as the associated tests used in assessing the overall system’s performance.
Based on discussions with the Project Sponsor, two primary constraints were identified by the Sun-Tracking Solar Panel Team. The cost of designing, prototyping, testing, and building the product is limited to a $1200 budget provided by Trinity University. The time allotted for designing, prototyping, testing, and building of the product is limited to Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters.
The final design is held to certain project requirements that will be discussed in future sections. The requirement that the solar panel system should be water-resistant through hurricane caliber rains was met with an IP-55 rated box. The requirement that the solar panel system should be windproof up to 60 mph was tested and partially met using a Fusion 360 wind simulation. When the actuators were fully extended, the system was unable to withstand 60 mph winds, though it was able to while flat and half extended. The requirement that the solar panel should be able to rest on a slanted residential roof with roof pitch ranging up to 9/12 (36.9) was met by building a makeshift roof and performing the weight test. The solar panel system was then rested on this roof. The requirement that the solar panel system should be more energy-efficient than a stationary solar panel was met. The financial requirement that the additional cost of the final product to the residential unit should be recovered within ten years of installation, however, was not met.
Looking forward, we would like to resolve the current issues preventing us from meeting our design requirements. For the wind simulation, the most likely way to resolve this would be to add a wind sensor to our design. When the wind sensor is reading above a certain value, the panel will retract to its flat state, as it is the most windproof of any tilt setting. In order to combat the financial issue we ran into, we must either harvest more energy, or lower the production cost of our system. We think harvesting more energy is the more viable option, and thus think that adding a second axis of tilt to our solar panel would be our best option
Do Different Data Analytics Impact Auditors\u27 Decisions?
Global stakeholders have expressed interest in increasing the use of data analytics throughout the audit process. While data analytics offer great promise in identifying auditrelevant information, auditors may not use this information to its full potential, resulting in a missed opportunity for possible improvements to audit quality. This article summarizes a study by Koreff (2022) that examines whether conclusions from different types of data analytical models (anomaly vs. predictive) and data analyzed (financial vs. non-financial), result in different auditor decisions. Findings suggest that when predictive models are used and identify a risk of misstatement, auditors increase budgeted audit hours more when financial data is analyzed than when non-financial data is analyzed. However, when anomaly models are used and identify a risk of misstatement, auditors’ budgeted hours do not differ based on the type of data analyzed. These findings provide evidence that different data analytics do not uniformly impact auditors’ decisions
Investigating Novel Interactions of Fig4 Toward Insights into Neurodegenerative Diseases
The goal of this study is to identify and investigate a candidate protein partner mediating complex independent Fig4 functions in yeast cells. The results presented here begin with the discovery that Fig4 disease related mutants in yeast: 1) bind poorly to Vac14 and, therefore, the Fab1-Vac14-Fig4 complex thereby failing to influence both the synthesis and turnover of PI3,5P2; and 2) these same mutants exhibit elevated growth rates when exposed to rapamycin, a growth inhibitor that potently inhibits TORC1 signaling, and mild heat stress. The data presented here suggests that this growth advantage is related to non-catalytic functions of Fig4 that occur when separated from its known protein complex. Additionally, the data indicates that this novel function is likely mediated or directly involves Ste20 under certain stress conditions. Discovering the physiological role of the relationship between Ste20, TORC1 signaling, and Fig4 in response to specific stresses stands to expand our area of inquiry into demyelinating diseases in humans
Thioester Synthesis By a Designed Nickel Enzyme Models Prebiotic Energy Conversion
The formation of carbon-carbon bonds from prebiotic precursors such as carbon dioxide represents the foundation of all primordial life processes. In extant organisms, this reaction is carried out by the carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH)/acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS) enzyme, which performs the cornerstone reaction in the ancient Wood-Ljungdahl metabolic pathway to synthesize the key biological metabolite, acetylCoA. Despite its significance, a fundamental understanding of this transformation is lacking, hampering efforts to harness analogous chemistry. To address these knowledge gaps, we have designed an artificial metalloenzyme within the azurin protein scaffold as a structural, functional, and mechanistic model of ACS. We demonstrate the intermediacy of the NiI species and requirement for ordered substrate binding in the bioorganometallic carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction from the one-carbon ACS substrates. The electronic and geometric structures of the nickel-acetyl intermediate have been characterized using time-resolved optical, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Moreover, we demonstrate that the nickel-acetyl species is chemically competent for selective acyl transfer upon thiol addition to biosynthesize an activated thioester. Drawing an analogy to the native enzyme, a mechanism for thioester generation by this ACS model has been proposed. The fundamental insight into the enzymatic process provided by this rudimentary ACS model has implications for the evolution of primitive ACS-like proteins. Ultimately, these findings offer strategies for development of highly active catalysts for sustainable generation of liquid fuels from one-carbon substrates, with potential for broad applications across diverse fields ranging from energy storage to environmental remediation
That She Shall Be Forever Banished From This Country : Alcohol, Sovereignty, and Social Segregation in New Netherland
Alcohol was a subject of deep concern for Indigenous nations and settler governments in early America, but, though all agreed that the alcohol trade was dangerous, they did not assess the problem or its remedies in the same ways. This essay disaggregates seventeenth-century alcohol ordinances from their enforcement by examining laws and diplomacy as separate from court records. In considering prohibitions and prosecutions as distinct yet interrelated, it uncovers the differences between Indigenous and Dutch interpretations of alcohol\u27s destructive effects to community and sovereignty. In the context of New Netherland diplomacy, Indigenous and settler authorities could reach consensus over alcohol trade prohibitions, but decisions about how to prosecute the laws fell to Dutch magistrates, who used alcohol cases to impose their particular visions of colonial communities upon ordinary settlers, especially women. Historians have long understood that ordinances regulating the alcohol trade were ineffective but have generally pointed to lax enforcement as the source of the laws\u27 shortcomings. This essay focuses instead on examples of when the laws were strictly enforced, revealing how prosecutorial decision-making became a gendered method of enforcing segregation between settler and Indigenous populations, demarcating settler homes as off-limits to Indigenous people
