Where Are the New Federally Qualified Health Center Sites? Uncovering FQHC Expansion and Ambulatory Care Policy Implications
So-called geographic expansion race, health care organizations expand physical facilities to different geographical locations as a way to foster growth. This study furthers knowledge on Federally Qualified Health Centers\u27 (FQHCs\u27) geographical expansion in relation to the local market\u27s payer mix. The results indicated that areas with a higher proportion of Medicaid patients with fewer uninsured are more likely to see new FQHC sites opening. The findings are consistent with previous literature on the health care organization\u27s geographical expansion and also indicated that some areas might lack proper FQHC services despite the high needs
Age Prediction by DNA Methylation in Neural Networks
Aging is traditionally thought to be caused by complex and interacting factors such as DNA methylation. The traditional formula of DNA methylation aging is based on linear models and little work has explored the effectiveness of neural networks, which can learn non-linear relationships. DNA methylation data typically consists of hundreds of thousands of feature space and a much less number of biological samples. This leads to overfitting and a poor generalization of neural networks. We propose Correlation Pre-Filtered Neural Network (CPFNN) that uses Spearman Correlation to pre-filter the input features before feeding them into neural networks. We compare CPFNN with the statistical regressions (i.e., Horvath\u27s and Hannum\u27s formulas), the neural networks with LASSO regularization and elastic net regularization, and the Dropout Neural Networks. CPFNN outperforms these models by at least 1 year in term of Mean Absolute Error (MAE), with a MAE of 2.7 years. We also test for association between the epigenetic age with Schizophrenia and Down Syndrome (p=0.024p=0.024 and p\u3c0.001
Recently Integrated \u3cem\u3eAlu\u3c/em\u3e Elements in Capuchin Monkeys: A Resource for \u3cem\u3eCebus\u3c/em\u3e/\u3cem\u3eSapajus\u3c/em\u3e Genomics
Capuchins are platyrrhines (monkeys found in the Americas) within the Cebidae fam-ily. For most of their taxonomic history, the two main morphological types of capuchins, gracile (untufted) and robust (tufted), were assigned to a single genus, Cebus. Further, all tufted capuchins were assigned to a single species, Cebus apella, despite broad geographic ranges spanning Central and northern South America. In 2012, tufted capuchins were assigned to their genus, Sapajus, with eight currently recognized species and five Cebus species, although these numbers are still under debate. Alu retrotransposons are a class of mobile element insertion (MEI) widely used to study primate phy-logenetics. However, Alu elements have rarely been used to study capuchins. Recent genome-level assemblies for capuchins (Cebus imitator; [Cebus_imitator_1.0] and Sapajus apella [GSC_monkey_1.0]) facilitated large scale ascertainment of young lineage-specific Alu insertions. There are 1607 capuchin specific and 678 Sapajus specific Alu insertions along with candidate oligonucleotides for locus-specific PCR assays for many elements. PCR analyses identified 104 genus level and 51 species level Alu insertion polymorphisms. The Alu datasets reported in this study provide a valuable resource that will assist in the classification of archival samples lacking phenotypic data and for the study of capuchin phylogenetic relationships
Perception of Narcissism in College Professors
We conducted three studies to examine perceptions of grandiose narcissism in college professors. Narcissism might appear incompatible with the profession if professors are viewed fundamentally as helpers or as introverted bookworms. Then again, people might expect professors to display big egos congruent with the prestige of their profession and their privileged public platforms. Our research indicates that professors are generally not seen as highly narcissistic according to the criteria of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory and the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire, though they are viewed as more narcissistic than elementary school teachers. More professor narcissism was expected at colleges that prioritize scholarly productivity over teaching excellence. Male professors were viewed as more narcissistic, but only for narcissism dimensions associated with interpersonal hostility and for judgments of whether professors are “narcissistic.” We discuss possible implications for narcissistic professors’ ability to exploit the gap between academic ideals and reward system realities
How Social Media Analytics Can Inform Content Strategies
Social media has become a strategic tool for businesses and nonprofit organizations to connect with audiences. However, no comprehensive framework exists to support the continued improvement of social media outcomes. This work draws on prior studies related to social media analytics and user engagement to develop an overarching, analytics-driven process for social content strategy development and improvement. The process provides firms with a set of procedures to regularly assess competitors’ and possibly their own content topic posting activities. It then outlines steps to measure the influence of content topics and post characteristics on engagement outcomes and use the garnered insights to drive future posting activities. A proof-of-concept case in the healthcare context is presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed process
Artificial Neural Networks with a Signed-Rank Objective Function and Applications
In this paper, we propose to analyze artificial neural networks using a signed-rank objective function as the error function. We prove that the variance of the gradient of the learning process is bounded as a function of the number of patterns and/or outputs, therefore preventing the gradient explosion phenomenon. Simulations show that the method is particularly efficient at reproducing chaotic behaviors from biological models such as the Logistic and Ricker models. In particular, the accuracy of the learning process is improved relatively to the least squares objective function in these cases. Applications in regression settings on two real datasets, one small and the other relatively large are also considered

From Werther and die Novelle to Hermann und Dorothea, Faust and his scientific writings, we find three categories of plant depictions: first as embodiments of green vitality that elicit emotional responses; second, as humanly-shaped cultivations or horticultural realms; and third, we find inklings of the promise of actual vegetal agency establishing the very world in which we human beings and all other animals live. The Role of Carbonate Factories and Sea Water Chemistry on Basin-Wide Ramp to High-Relief Carbonate Platform Evolution: Triassic, Nanpanjiang Basin, South China
The end-Permian extinction and its aftermath altered carbonate factories globally for millions of years, but its impact on platform geometries remains poorly understood. Here, the evolution in architecture and composition of two exceptionally exposed platforms in the Nanpanjiang Basin are constrained and compared with geochemical proxies to evaluate controls on platform geometries. Geochemical proxies indicate elevated siliciclastic and nutrient fluxes in the basal Triassic, at the Induan—Olenekian boundary and in the uppermost Olenekian. Cerium/Ce* shifts from high Ce/Ce* values and a lack of Ce anomaly indicating anoxia during the Lower Triassic to a negative Ce anomaly indicating oxygenation in the latest Olenekian and Anisian. Uranium and Mo depletion represents widespread anoxia in the world\u27s oceans in the Early Triassic with progressive oxygenation in the Anisian. Carbonate factories shifted from skeletal in the Late Permian to abiotic and microbial in the Early Triassic before returning to skeletal systems in the Middle Triassic, Anisian coincident with declining anoxia. Margin facies shifted to oolitic grainstone in the Early Triassic with development of giant ooids and extensive marine cements. Anisian margins, in contrast, are boundstone with a diverse skeletal component. The shift in platform architecture from ramp to steep, high-relief, flat-topped profiles is decoupled from carbonate compositions having occurred in the Olenekian prior to the onset of basin oxygenation and biotic stabilisation of the margins. A basin-wide synchronous shift from ramp to high-relief platforms points to a combination of high subsidence rate and basin starvation coupled with high rates of abiotic and microbial carbonate accumulation and marine cement stabilisation of oolitic margins as the primary causes for margin up-building. High sea water carbonate saturation resulting from a lack of skeletal sinks for precipitation, and basin anoxia promoting an expanded depth of carbonate supersaturation, probably contributed to marine cement stabilisation of margins that stimulated the shift from ramp to high-relief platform architecture
Trust-Based Social Behaviour in Role-Playing Games
Although previous artificial intelligence research has done much to advance video games, not as much has been done to integrate that research into commercially viable titles. In this study, the game Barrel Smasher was developed, demonstrating a socially aware model of Non-Player Characters based on internal trust scores of other characters. The game allows the player to interact with these characters through dialogue, and it provides elements of Role-Playing Games like quests, items, and combat. The result is a game that combines social interactions and other forms of gameplay into a single, connected system. In doing so, the game creates interactive quest progression with more variation than is found in traditional quest systems
