The Role of Digital Capabilities in Enabling Improvisation Management\uef\ubcA Case Study of Thermaltake Bicycle
Since 2020, there are too many uncertainties coming from a series of events such as the new crown epidemic, de-globalization, and geopolitical conflicts. Managerial improvisation is increasingly mentioned in studies because of its effectiveness in dealing with environmental uncertainties and rapid response. Past research has identified two digital capabilities: IT infrastructure and information management capabilities that can help organizations better unleash their improvisation capabilities in the face of the unexpected.
This study takes a case study approach to analyze Thermaltake's use of digital technology to help unleash its improvisation capabilities to create a cycling business when faced with the impact of the epidemic. Based on the three different levels of managerial improvisation in different contexts, it was divided into three stages and explored how digital capabilities were used to unleash managerial improvisation capabilities. The study found that there is no universal approach to successful managerial improvisation. IT infrastructure is the foundation for successful managerial improvisation. Information management capabilities can help companies be more creative and come up with innovative solutions. In addition, organizations should develop a long-term information management strategy based on their own industry characteristics, and can prioritize the development of some of the most needed digital capabilities to deal with the unexpected situations that the company may face
Consumption Characteristics of Single People in Taiwan - An Analysis Based on the Survey of Family Income and Expenditure
Singlehood economy is a trend in today's emerging generation. Not only are people wishing to pursue a better quality of life, they also enjoy the freedom and joy that being single brings. So, what kind of impact does being single have on consumption? Recent data shows that the unmarried rate among the marriageable population aged 25 to 44 has reached 44%. According to statistics from the Household Registration Office of the Ministry of the Interior, the number of single-person households increased by 130,000 compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 3.13 million households in 2021. This indicates that the proportion of people choosing to live alone is quite large, and is even showing an increasing trend.
However, we have found that previous research on single individuals have mainly focused on the life satisfaction or adaptability of single women, while relatively lacking in the study of the impact of singlehood on consumption characteristics. Therefore, this study uses data from "The Survey of Family Income and Expenditure of the Republic of China" from 2011 to 2020 to estimate empirically the impact of singlehood on consumption characteristics.
The findings show that people who are single are not only significantly higher than other people in terms of total consumption expenditure, but also different from other people in terms of consumption characteristics, showing that their single life creates a difference in consumption characteristics. Due to the factor of living alone, paying attention to external image and sense of life ritual is valued by nearly all people who are single, so clothing and travel accommodations are all positively and significantly affected. However, singlehood has advantages and corresponding costs. Due to the lack of economies of scale and no one else to share the expenditures, people who are single have to bear alone expenses such as water and electricity rent, loan expenses, etc., which is the cost of being single despite the beautiful freedom
Corporate Financial Characteristics and ESG Performance
In recent years, with the rise of environmental protection awareness, more and more people have begun to pay attention to the issue of green sustainability. Many investors have begun to consider ESG score as one of the factors for investment targets. Therefore, this study analyzes the impact of four different financial characteristics of Taiwan listed and OTC companies on ESG score, aiming to help investors predict a company's ESG performance based on its financial features. The empirical results show that net operating income and EBIT have a significant positive impact on ESG score. This suggests that companies with higher profitability and earning capacity tend to have better ESG performance compared to other companies in the same industry. In terms of cost expenditures, research and development expenses have a positive impact on ESG score. It can be inferred that companies may improve their carbon footprint by developing new technologies, making their products more competitive. However, the increase in capital expenditures will reduce ESG score, especially causing significant negative effects on the environment. On the growth aspect, both revenue growth and net profit growth rates have a negative impact on overall ESG ratings. This suggests that companies may prioritize their core business development without sufficient focus on ESG implementation. Regarding safety aspects, free cash flow, cash holding, and dividend payout ratios all have a significant positive impact on ESG ratings. This indicates that companies with sufficient funds, under less financial constraints, tend to be more willing to disclose relevant information and achieve information transparency, resulting in better overall ESG performance
The Effects of Managerial Coaching on Team Work Engagement and Team Satisfaction: Team Psychological Capital as a Mediator
Managerial coaching is regarded as a key factor that can improve the work performance of subordinates, and has received much attention in practical management in recent years. The influence of management coaches on teams is an important key factor to be explored in this study. This study aims to explore the impact of managerial coaching on team work engagement and team satisfaction, and the mediating role played by team psychological capital. This study has two purposes. The first is to test whether managerial coaching can positively affect team psychological capital; the second is to examine and verify the mediating role of team psychological capital between managerial coaching, team work engagement, and team satisfaction. This study takes the work team of the first type of business practitioners in Taiwan as the research object. The number of each team is about three to five people, and the actual effective sample is 101 groups. The research results show that supervisors' managerial coaching skills can affect subordinates' team psychological capital, and managerial coaching can effectively improve team work engagement and team satisfaction. In addition, this study confirms that team psychological capital plays a key role in team work engagement and team satisfaction
An Investigation of Consequences and Boundary Conditions of Employee Silence
In recent years, there has been an increase number of studies that are related to silence, but most of them have been focusing on exploring the antecedents, i.e., the reasons of why silence occurs. However, the consequences of silence are seldom discussed. Therefore, there are two main purposes for my study about silence. First, to examine the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between silence and psychological distress. And second, to examine whether core self-evaluation would strengthen or weaken the impact of silence on rumination and psychological distress. This study had two stages of questionnaire survey with one-month interval between the two stages of fill out. The questionnaire respondents of this study are business workers in the financial industry, and total 310 valid samples as used. According to the results of the study, rumination had a mediating effect between silence and psychological distress. When employees are silent, the process of repeatedly recalling negative events would strengthen employees' personal psychological reactions such as anxiety and depression. On the other hand, the core self-evaluation did not have a significant moderating effect on a relationship between silence and rumination
Effect Of Empowering Leadership On Championing Behavior In Vietnamese It Service Sector:The Mediation Of Trust In Leader And Self-Efficacy
The study fills the gap in research on empowering leadership (EL) and employees\ue2 championing behavior (CB). Using social cognitive theory as a foundation, this study analyzes how EL influences CB in the Information Technology (IT) Service sector. The paper argues that the relationship between EL and CB is mediated by trust in leader (Tr) and self-efficacy (Se).
To test the hypotheses, quantitative research methodology was utilized. An online questionnaire built on existing scales were conveniently distributed to eligible participants. More than 230 respondents participated in this study. The data was subsequently processed and analyzed by using Hayes Process Macro for Dual Mediation Analysis in IBM SPSS Statistics version 28.
This study empirically demonstrated that EL was positively related to CB in the setting of IT service sector. Tr and Se partially mediated how CB was determined by EL. It means a part of effect from EL to CB is transmitted through Tr and Se. Sex and job type (IT/non-IT) are control variables that impact significantly on the model.
This study contributes to the literature by linking EL and CB. It clarifies how EL can improve CB via Tr and Se as moderators.
Keywords: Empowering leadership, Championing behavior, Trust in leader, Self-efficacy, Vietnamese IT service sector
A study of trans-parasocial relation between streamer and viewer on a live streaming platform: the mediating effect of fanship on stickiness and purchase intention
In today's world, new technology dramatically impacts how people connect and communicate with one another. Live streaming services (e.g., YouTube Live, Instagram Live, V live, Twitch, etc.) have become one of the most critical tools for streamers to build relationships with their viewers in real-time. Studies have argued that the original concept of parasocial relations is no longer just a one-sided relationship in recent years. This article aimed to test whether the trans-parasocial relation will positively affect viewers' stickiness and purchase intention on live streaming platforms. Within this context, trans-parasocial relation is defined as a synchronously interactive and two-way relationship between the streamer and viewers. Furthermore, this research investigate fanship as the mediating factor in the relationship between the trans-parasocial relation and viewers' behaviors (i.e., purchase intention and viewing time). The results of this research were collected through an online survey tool, Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Overall, 384 valid responses were analyzed for our study, and the structural equation models (SEMs) were applied to test the predicted hypothesis. Overall, the result reveals significant direct and indirect effects of trans-parasocial relation on stickiness and purchase intention. The higher trans-parasocial relation further leads to higher viewers' fanship and increases their willingness to stay longer or make purchases on the live stream platforms. These findings further understand current streamer-viewer relations and viewers' online behavior on social media platforms
International Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees\uef\ubcA Case Study of the United Nations Refugee Agency and Practice
The High Commissioner for Refugees is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the worldwide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. In its efforts to achieve this objective, the Office strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, and to return home voluntarily. By assisting refugees to return to their own country or to settle permanently in another country, UNHCR also seeks lasting solutions to their plight. There is a critical global need for more durable solutions for refugees. Complementary pathways are safe and regulated avenues for persons in need of international protection that provide for a lawful stay in a third country where the international protection needs of the beneficiaries are met. Complementary pathways are the importance of ensuring refugee resettlement programs remain focused on providing solutions to refugees with the greatest needs and in cooperation with other international protection actors, but that there are other migration solutions that can provide additional pathways or capacities to provide long-term safety to refugees. Examples of complementary pathways include labor mobility programs, education pathways, family reunion and community sponsorship programs. UNHCR and partners work closely with the local authorities to provide protection and assistance to the displaced persons. UNHCR is advocating for the social inclusion of IDPs and refugees and stressing that returns must be safe, voluntary, dignified and based on informed decision
Low-complexity Sound Event Detection System with Mean Teacher Model Training, Reparameterization Architecture, and Knowledge Distillation
This thesis proposes a low-complexity sound event detection system, which accurately predicts sound events while maintaining low computational complexity. In the model architecture, we refer to the concept of reparameterization VGG-style convolution architecture. Multi-scale convolutional branches enhance feature extraction in model training. After training, the structural reparameterization process fuses the parameters of multiple convolutional branches into a single branch structure, achieving model compression.
To improve data utilization, we incorporated knowledge distillation and the mean-teacher framework to train the proposed low-complexity model. To provide reliable pseudo-labels for the low-complexity model training, we combined a large-scale acoustic representation model with a frequency dynamic convolutional architecture to establish a model with high accuracy.
The proposed low-complexity model achieved PSDS-1 with 0.453 and PSDS-2 with 0.723 on the Domestic Environment Sound Event Detection Dataset (DESED).
It outperforms the baseline system proposed by DCASE 2023 task 4A with PSDS-1 of 0.368 and PSDS-2 of 0.574.
The proposed low-complexity model has only 0.74M parameters and 0.443G FLOPs (floating point operations), which is 67.3\% and 47.9\% of the baseline model.
In addition, we participated in DCASE 2023 task 4A with the pre-trained model.
The systems won 7th out of 16 rankings in the single systems contest, and 7th out of 13 rankings in the ensemble systems contest
Knockdown of ATG5 inhibits cell viability and promotes cell death of colorectal cancer cells
ATG5 is an autophagy-related regulatory gene involved in the formation and extension of autophagosomes during the maturation of macroautophagy. Autophagy is a cellular metabolic process aimed at maintaining cell survival and metabolism under stress or starvation conditions. Our previous research indicated that overexpression of ATG5 is associated with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer patients. As a result, ATG5 might serve as a therapeutic target for colorectal cancer. To verify whether silencing ATG5 can inhibit colorectal cancer cell viability, we designed three ATG5-ASOs to suppress ATG5 expression. We utilized antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to inhibit ATG5 expression and investigate the inhibition of autophagy on colorectal cancer cell viability. Our results first showed a significant reduction in ATG5 protein expression in CRC cells transfected with ATG5-ASO, particularly in HCT116 cells, while SW620 and LS-174T cells exhibited limited inhibitory effects. ATG5-ASO effectively and specifically inhibited the expression of autophagy-related proteins LC3 and p62. Additionally, the cell viability of colorectal cancer cells was dose-dependently suppressed, with the most significant inhibition observed in HCT116 cells, followed by DLD-1 cells, while SW620 and LS-174T cells showed limited effects under ATG5-ASO treatment, consistent with the western blot results. To determine whether the decrease in cell viability resulted from cell growth inhibition or cell death, we used flow cytometry to assess the cell cycle phases of colorectal cancer cells after ATG5-ASO treatment. The numbers of HCT116, DLD-1, and LS-174T cells in the sub-G1 phase significantly increased following treatment with low (10 nM) or high (100 nM) concentrations of ATG5-ASO, while the corresponding G1 phase cells decreased significantly. However, there was no significant effect on SW620 cells. To further confirm the cellular status after treatment, a live/dead fluorescence assay was performed to determine the exact effects of ATG5-ASO treatment on colorectal cancer cells. When HCT116, DLD-1, and LS-174T cells were exposed to low (10 nM) or high (100 nM) concentrations of ATG5-ASO. The number of viable cells was decreased, while the number of dead cells was increased. However, SW620 cells showed no change in live and dead cell counts, suggesting that specific doses of ATG5-ASO can promote cell death in certain types of colorectal cancer cells. In conclusion, ATG5-ASO may hold potential as a future therapeutic drug for the treatment of colorectal cancer
