Presentation of guilt and justice in Reginald Rose’s “Twelve Angry Men” and Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons”

    No full text
The purpose of this extended essay is to examine the ways in which the concepts of justice and guilt were portrayed on personal as well as societal levels in the plays “All My Sons” by Arthur Miller and “Twelve Angry Men” by Reginald Rose through the question “How are the themes of justice, judgment, and guilt conveyed in Reginald Rose’s ‘Twelve Angry Men’ and Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’?”. The scope of this essay covers two plays of the same era in the United States, the 1950s. After reading the two plays, the circumstances provided in them paralleled to the present world in my head leading me to think about the judicial failures and disruptions. Both works are both critical and provide insight to the era in which they were written. The scope of this essay consists of the judicial processes and their failures, crime, guilt, and punishment in All My Sons and Twelve Angry Men. The close examination of such concepts will be made through characters and their actions and choices, events, and interactions; comparisons and contrasts and parallels to the social context and background. This essay concludes that even in the absence of judicial implementations, the existence of guilt helps justice find its way – not necessarily in a legal way. Guilt is a fundamental agent in determining one’s actions, regardless of whether they committed a crime themselves or share a bloodline with a criminal. Direct or indirect guilt lead one to take actions to make inner peace and/or bring justice back in place. Evident non-legal justice in All My Sons prevails when both Joe and Larry Keller commit suicide out of guilt; while in Twelve Angry Men, through the efforts and deliberations of Juror Eight, the justice system is forced to make the right call

Death in Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne

    No full text
This extended essay examines how death is treated in selected short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The essay explores the research question in terms of literary devices, symbols, tone and mood used when portraying death and the contextual or thematic results of these portrayals. The arguments and claims in the extended essay are supported with quotes from the literary pieces or supported with evidence from the short stories. The essay investigates the reasearch question in two main aspects, namely the portrayal of death and the function of death within the context of the short stories. When discussing the portrayal of death, the literary devices used, the tone and mood created, the characterization and the foreshadowing used by the authors are determined and their relative effect on the portrayal of death are conferred. When determining the function of death, the themes related to or a result of death are explored and if any, the authors’ personal intentions are identified. In the conclusion, it is determined that with respect to the portrayal of death, Poe mainly uses the unity of effect, associating all aspects of his stories to central themes by affixing symbolic values to them, while Hawthorne displays subjective narration, symbolic elements and motifs. In comparison, Poe’s portrayal of death is more artistic when compared to Hawthorne’s realistic portrayal of death. With respect to the function of death, Poe uses death to explore the philosophical order of life and psychological state of the individual, whereas Hawthorne uses death to comment on social norms, myths, human nature and religion

    No full text
This extended essay is an investigation of the protagonist female characters in both James Joyce’s Dubliners and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio. The research question revolves around unwed young women and married women in their motherhood in terms of man-woman relationships, sociocultural views and religious concepts. In addition to the context, the purpose and explanation of the literary devices is included in the relevant sections of the essay. The arguments are fully supported by quotations from the two literary works and refuted with proper historical knowledge in appropriate places. Mainly only the characters in the chosen short stories are analyzed and explored, however for some of the stories, additional characters are taken into consideration. The purpose of this work is to investigate how women are portrayed in two diverse cultures with the aforementioned circumstances. The extended essay is composed of an introduction, main body and conclusion. In the main body, James Joyce’s Dubliners and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio is evaluated and analyzed. The two literary works are compared within their own historical and cultural context. While analyzing the short stories, a pattern of the development and growth of a woman is displayed by initially capturing a young teenage girl’s story to focusing on a married mother. Furthermore, in the comparison paragraph, the scope of the two authors and how much they depart from historical context is taken into account. In the conclusion of the essay, the roles of women in both Irish and American cultures are reflected upon and the authors’ own interpretations, thoughts and attitudes towards women are successfully revealed with their unique writing styles

Investigation of sounds produced by stringed instruments

    No full text
This extended essay is about sound produced by stringed instruments, specifi-cally guitar. There will be 2 different parts which are about two different charac-teristics of sound. One is pitch and second is timbre (quality and characteristics of sound). Pitch will be examined by changing length and timbre by changing thick-ness of string. I chose this experiment because I am interested in both sound and physics. I wanted know more about sound and audio. In this experiment, I learnt a lot about sound, especially guitar sound. On the other hand, I did not know how to analyze sound and this essay gave me a chance to learn it. At very first times of this exper-iment it was very hard to analyze because, I did not know what to look at. The procedure and most of the measurements are done by same steps only, be-cause of independent variables, the data collected is different. Also uncertainties for length, diameter of string; frequency and hold time are same for both part 1 and part 2. This is why some of the uncertainties are not mentioned in part 2. Finally yet importantly, the instruments are same for part 1 and part 2. Be-cause of this while collecting different data, the instruments are resettled for avoiding errors and measurements are done in same conditions

How does the increase in expansion/compression ratio of an internal combustion engine change its efficiency when compression ratio is kept constant?

    No full text
The main purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effect of expansion/compression ratio on efficiency of an internal combustion engine. Efficiency of internal combustion engines are affected by compression ratio, expansion/ compression ratio, internal friction and many other factors. Compression ratio is the factor affecting on the fuel combustion process mainly affects the combustion pressure, as compression ratio increases, fuel solubility therefore released energy increases. Expansion is the process of converting pressure produced by heat, into kinetic energy. With enough expansion ratio pressure inside the combustion chamber can equalized to the pressure outside pressure. With optimization of these two ratios, useful energy produced from unit amount of fuel can be increased. To conserve fuel burning efficiency and increasing expansion ratio, first I determined what expansion/compression ratio to test and then calculated the volume need to be reduced in the combustion chamber to fix compression ratio at eight and increase expansion ratio. To reduce volume, metal pieces were bolted on the cylinder head, graduated cylinder was mounted on the fuel tank. To make results closer to real life usage, 2 kilos of cylindrical mass was bolted on the crankshaft. In each test same amount of fuel was used, RPM was kept constant in each run, times were recorded for each setup. Each configuration of expansion/compression ratio is tested for four times. Four different time data for each expansion/compression ratio configuration summed and divided by four to get average time. To calculate average percentage efficiency gain, average time of running for each expansion/compression ratio configuration was divided by the average time of configuration with expansion/compression ratio of 1 and 1 was subtracted and divided by 100. Graphs show that efficiency increases as expansion/compression ratio increases

In my research, my aim has been to find out optimum amount of ammonia (NH3 solution) to raise the yield of Lens culinaris (Lentil), so that maximum amount of Lens culinaris (Lentil) can be obtained to satisfy protein demand of developing and underdeveloped countries with limited agricultural land available and minimum input costs. In my research, I found out that Nitrogen and Phosphate were critical elements for raising the quality of food crops. However, I found out that there were a great deal of studies on phosphatic fertilizer while there was few, if no, study on the effects of Nitrogen in Lens culinaris (Lentil) farming, partly because Nitrogen was deemed to have a slightly less contribution on the growth than Phosphate. So, my research would close a gap in the literature to an extent. In the study I picked ammonia (NH3 solution) which is a Nitrogen rich fertilizer. To prove my hypothesis, I set up an experiment which took me 7 months to complete. The number of Lens culinaris (seed number) was dependent variable, other independent variables, such as irrigation, sun radiation etc. were kept constant while amount of ammonia (NH3 solution), an independent variable, was changed during experiment. After germination, the seeds were separated according to the height of the each individual crop into 5 distinct groups. 25 pots with 5 different colors representing groups were used. The first group was labeled as “Control Group” which would not receive any ammonia (NH3 solution), representing a reference point. Experiment Group-1 was the group that would be treated with 5 mg. of ammonia (NH3 solution), Group-2, Group-3 and Group-4 would be treated with 10 mg., 15 mg. and 20 mg. of ammonia (NH3 solution) respectively. Counting the seed number of the crop in each pot simultaneously was conducted in every 10-day interval for 90 day period. Results I obtained supported my research question and validated my hypothesis that optimum amount of ammonia (NH3 solution) concentration has the greatest effect on the growth of Lens culinaris (Lentil)

    No full text
Research quesiton of this essay is ; ‘To what extent do the effectiveness of biogas produced from animal-sourced waste and biogas produced from plant-sourced waste, differ from each other; in terms of energy production, measured with the volume of biogas produced by same mass of animal sourced waste and plant sourced waste ?’ This essay compares the biogas production of animal sourced and plant sourced wastes. The idea came from a school trip to Mamak Landfill Gas to solve the main problem of these days ; renewable, sustainable energy. To measure the amount of biogas produced, animal and plant wastes put into bottles , balloons used as caps to bottles which means increase in the volume of balloon shows increased biogas production. To prevent heat change caused by light, a thick blanket is used like a roof to system. According to results, animal sourced wastes produce 305.92 cm3 and plant sourced wastes produce 213.89 cm3 of biogas. It also shows, amount of biogas produced is directly proportional with the amount of carbon atoms inside substance. As the t-test and standart errors show, datas were consistent. As t value is bigger than 1.734, there was obvious compelling distinction between animal and plant wastes. T-test increases the accuracy of the datas by the way. The graph also shows clearly the difference between two types of wastes and reliability of the datas. It was found that, when the amount of substance and water increased, biogas production increased. These datas scored in a constant time, 10 days and temperature stabiled for both systems. Maximum amount of biogas produced 7th day after that, the biological structure of substances started denaturation and biogas production decreases. On the other hand carrot, cucumber and chicken used as samples for individual’s daily wastes. As a conclusion, animal wastes usage would be better in biogas producing facilities
