Wearable Device Activity Classification With Machine Learning and a Custom Web Application
abstract: Human activity recognition is the task of identifying a person’s movement from sensors in a wearable device, such as a smartphone, smartwatch, or a medical-grade device. A great method for this task is machine learning, which is the study of algorithms that learn and improve on their own with the help of massive amounts of useful data. These classification models can accurately classify activities with the time-series data from accelerometers and gyroscopes. A significant way to improve the accuracy of these machine learning models is preprocessing the data, essentially augmenting data to make the identification of each activity, or class, easier for the model.
On this topic, this paper explains the design of SigNorm, a new web application which lets users conveniently transform time-series data and view the effects of those transformations in a code-free, browser-based user interface. The second and final section explains my take on a human activity recognition problem, which involves comparing a preprocessed dataset to an un-augmented one, and comparing the differences in accuracy using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network to make classifications. A Cross-Cultural Study of Parental Leave on Quality of Life between Finland, Japan, and The United States
abstract: Managing a work-home balance is a daunting task for any parent. It is often difficult to take leave from work to care for one’s family due to financial barriers, which simultaneously poses a threat to family development. Although many countries have parental leave policies in place to account for this, effectiveness of these policies vary by country. This study aims to find to what extent parental leave has an impact on the quality of life. In this study, quality of life was investigated by the rank of the country on the Happiness Index and through the lens of achieving sustainable family development, which was subsequently described to be reflected by a country’s governmental resources provided during parental leave, as well as the country’s Gender Inequality Index. Through a cross-cultural review of literature, it was found that there seems to be an indirect, complex correlation of parental leave to the quality of life, and external factors such as sociocultural ideals, gender inequality, and varying workplace practices have greater significance on quality of life. Investigating Current and Future Opportunities of Voluntary Carbon Offsets
abstract: Voluntary carbon offsets have become a key strategy of climate action efforts in the wake of worldwide anthropogenic climate change. The voluntary carbon market has grown rapidly as more institutions gain interest in contributing to decarbonization efforts to reach emissions reduction goals. The voluntary carbon offset market has introduced decarbonization solutions through various carbon removal, reduction, and avoidance projects that provide accessibility to climate solutions and credit affordability. However, the variability of projects and verification systems has led to some criticisms of the validity and accuracy of these solutions. This thesis assesses the current state of the voluntary carbon market policies and future opportunities and trajectories for this market. (abstract
An Assessment of Arizona College Students’ Knowledge, Preventive Strategies, Preparedness, and Risk Perception during Covid-19
abstract: The SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) virus has had severe impacts on college students' ways of life. To examine how students were coping and perceiving the Covid-19 pandemic, a secondary analysis of an online survey across the three Arizona public universities investigated students’ knowledge about Covid-19, engagement with preventive strategies, pandemic preparedness and gauged their risk-perception. Results from our analysis indicate that the students were knowledgeable about Covid-19 and were changing their habits and engaging with preventive measures. Results further suggest that students were prepared for the pandemic in terms of resources and were exhibiting high-risk perceptions. The data also revealed that students who were being cautious and engaging with preventive behaviors had a higher risk-perception than individuals who were not. As for individuals who were prepared for the pandemic in terms of supplies, their risk perception was similar to those who did not have supplies. Individuals who were prepared and capable of providing a single caretaker to tend to their sick household members and isolate them in a separate room had a higher risk perception than those who could not. These results can help describe how college students will react to a future significant event, what resources students may be in need of, and how universities can take additional steps to keep their students safe and healthy. The results from this study and recommendations will provide for a stronger and more understanding campus community during times of distress and can improve upon already established university protocols for health crises and even natural disasters. Advancing the Implementation of Medication-Assisted Treatment in Residential Treatment
abstract: Abstract
Objective: To assess the attitudes and knowledge of behavioral health technicians (BHTs)
towards opioid overdose management and to assess the effect of online training on opioid
overdose response on BHTs’ attitudes and knowledge, and the confidence to identify and
respond to opioid overdose situations.
Design/Methods: Pre-intervention Opioid Overdose Knowledge Scale (OOKS) and Opioid
Overdose Attitude Scale (OOAS) surveys were administered electronically to five BHTs in
2020. Data obtained were de-identified. Comparisons between responses to pre-and post-surveys
questions were carried out using the standardized Wilcoxon signed-rank statistical test(z). This
study was conducted in a residential treatment center (RTC) with the institutional review board's
approval from Arizona State University. BHTs aged 18 years and above, working at this RTC
were included in the study.
Interventions: An online training was provided on opioid overdose response (OOR) and
naloxone administration and on when to refer patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) for
medication-assisted treatment.
Results: Compared to the pre-intervention surveys, the BHTs showed significant improvements
in attitudes on the overall score on the OOAS (mean= 26.4 ± 13.1; 95% CI = 10.1 - 42.7; z =
2.02; p = 0.043) and significant improvement in knowledge on the OOKS (mean= 10.6 ± 6.5;
95% CI = 2.5 – 18.7; z =2.02, p = 0.043).
Conclusions and Relevance: Training BHTs working in an RTC on opioid overdose response is
effective in increasing attitudes and knowledge related to opioid overdose management. opioid
overdose reversal in RTCs.

Preschool Teacher Training on Trauma and Resilience
abstract: Childhood traumatic experiences are a prevalent public health issue. Children exposed to trauma
often exhibit behaviors that make educating them challenging. Preschool teachers at a
southwestern United States preschool receive no training related to childhood trauma and
resilience. The purpose of this project was to educate preschool teachers on trauma and
resilience to improve attitude related to educating children with trauma. Following Arizona State
University Internal Review Board approval, preschool teachers were recruited from a non-profit
metropolitan preschool. Project included two pre-training questionnaires (Adult Resilience
Measure-Revised [ARM-R] and Attitudes Related to Trauma Informed Care scale [ARTIC]),
one two-hour training via Zoom on childhood trauma and resilience, and post-training ARTIC
questionnaire at two and six weeks. Seven teachers (n=7) participated in pre-training
questionnaires, and three of these teachers (n=3) participated in both post-training
questionnaires. All participating teachers were female and Caucasian. Average age of
participants was 49.43 years (SD=8.40, range 36-60), and experience average was 17.17 years
(SD=10.15, range 3-30). AMR-R average score was 72.29 (SD=8.28, range 61-83). Pre-training
ARTIC score average was 3.87 (SD=0.16). Post-training ARTIC scores at two weeks and six
weeks post-training were 3.65 (SD=0.22) and 3.86 (SD=0.25). Clinical significance included
improved teacher awareness of childhood trauma and improved ability to interact with children
exposed to trauma. Teachers exhibited high resilience scores. Additional research needed
related to further address educating preschool teachers related to trauma informed care, related to
building resilience in children, and related to the impact of teacher resilience on trauma informed
care.

Pool Level Monitor and Autofill System: A Smart Home Device
abstract: As smart home devices become more common in households across the globe, it is surprising that companies who specialize in IoT devices have not exploited the world of swimming pools. As a pool owner and avid IoT user, it has become increasingly obvious to me that such devices are necessary. Thus, I have developed an embedded system – connected to a web-based reporting system – that accurately reports common chemical levels of a swimming pool. In addition, this system includes an autofill function with information about the amount of water dispensed. This system gives pool owners access to an all-in-one device that can be used on any pool, new or old. Future implementations include a personalized application to display the pool levels and user-defined suggestions when certain levels become too high or low. (abstract
Branching Worlds: Quantum Mechanics and Hugh Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation
abstract: This thesis attempts to explain Everettian quantum mechanics from the ground up, such that those with little to no experience in quantum physics can understand it. First, we introduce the history of quantum theory, and some concepts that make up the framework of quantum physics. Through these concepts, we reveal why interpretations are necessary to map the quantum world onto our classical world. We then introduce the Copenhagen interpretation, and how many-worlds differs from it. From there, we dive into the concepts of entanglement and decoherence, explaining how worlds branch in an Everettian universe, and how an Everettian universe can appear as our classical observed world. From there, we attempt to answer common questions about many-worlds and discuss whether there are philosophical ramifications to believing such a theory. Finally, we look at whether the many-worlds interpretation can be proven, and why one might choose to believe it. (abstract
