A Mathematical Analysis of a Model of Adderall Abuse
abstract: Adderall remains to be one of the most commonly abused drug among college campuses. Although it is a prescription drug that is primarily used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it has become one of the many "study drugs" due to its usage among college students during stressful school times, such as exams, where increased concentration and energy levels are thought to improve work efficiency. However, Adderall is notable for having a high potential for abuse and a risk of psychological and physical side effects. In this paper, we conducted a mathematical analysis on an existing epidemiological model of Adderall abuse. We started by verifying the positivity of solutions using techniques from dynamical systems because this is a population model dealing with people. Then, we found and investigated different equilibrium solutions to analyze their stability using both analytical and graphical approaches. Finally, the results were tied back into the Adderall model and conclusions were drawn. (abstract

Sustaining Culture: Interiors Heritage Conservation In Adaptive Reuse Projects
abstract: Heritage conservation of built environments through adaptive reuse is an integral part of preserving and regenerating a community's cultural memory and identity. The buildings we inherit become the visual storytellers of our communities' histories and traditions; how we design tells the story of how we lived. It is that treasure that is passed down through generations that morphs the characteristics of collective cultural identity. However, zeitgeist architecture which is adaptively reused, often focuses on preservation, restoration, or conservation of the architecture or the shell. Simultaneously, the heritage interiors are transformed, losing the spirit of place to the new use and program. This thesis argues for the importance of preserving heritage interiors as a vital component of a building's story in adaptive reuse projects, referencing literature about the history of adaptive reuse and heritage conservation in built environments, as well as different approaches, tools, and strategies for heritage conservation in various projects and precedents. The thesis explores multiple case studies of varying typologies in Jordan, the Middle East, which successfully address the challenge of heritage interiors conservation. The study examines the different ways in which the spirit of the interior space is preserved and included as part of the design strategy while transforming the programming of the space and the new functions it serves. Examples of such strategies include materials and textiles, furniture, fixtures, use of original materials and architectural features, and the degree of intervention in the preservation, restoration, and conservation of the interiors. The thesis is grounded in the question of how adaptive reuse can approach heritage interiors in a way that conserves the experience of the architecture and the interiors while transforming the programming of the space. Victorian Anthropomorphization of Dogs, Birds, and Primates and the Dehumanization of Undisciplined Peoples
abstract: Across modern literature focusing on Victorian views of animals, scholars have observed that Victorians compare non-European people, women, and children to animals via anthropomorphization or the attribution of human characteristics to an animal. It is crucial to look at non-Europeans, women, and children because they represent a Populus that Victorians perceived as needing to be civilized. During this time period, colonization by Britain was rampant, women were questioning the validity of their societal roles, and children needed to be a successful generation for the future of Britain. The Victorian novels, Heart and Science and The Island of Doctor Moreau both provide fascinating examples of anthropomorphization in entirely different ways. Heart and Science takes place in the British metropole and merely fantasizes about anthropomorphization while The Island of Doctor realizes that fantasy on a remote island controlled by a French scientist who turns animals into humanized Beast People. Analysis of these novels allows readers to see how Victorians fantasized about anthropomorphization and how that connects back to their need for control and dominance. Furthermore, the various scholars brought up in this thesis discuss how non-Europeans, women, and children were all alike compared to canines, birds, and primates across Victorian literature and art. These scholars begin to point out the anthropomorphization that occurred in Victorian society and literature, but they either downplay the role of anthropomorphization or fail to address it. This failure leads to an inability to see the full subtly of British dominance over people regarded as undisciplined and could lead to ignorance of how long anthropomorphization has existed. Procedural Content Generation Using Noise
abstract: Procedural content generation refers to the creation of data algorithmically using controlled randomness. These algorithms can be used to generate complex environments and geological formations as opposed to manually creating environments, using photogrammetry, or other means. Geological formations and the surrounding terrain can be created using noise based algorithms such as Perlin noise. However, interpreting noise in this manner has a number of challenges due to the pseudo-random nature of noise. We will discuss how to generate noise, how to render noise, and the challenges in interpreting noise. (abstract

Exploring Frameworks and Best Practices of Current Experience Marketing Efforts
abstract: Experience Marketing philosophy revolves around brand interaction with consumers’ physical senses in order to provide an exceptional experience that has value and creates affinity towards the brand (Datta, 2017).
Experience Marketing and its various subcategories have been defined through a multitude of academic journals and publications (e.g., Experience v. experiential). However, there is a lack of consensus in academic literature over best practices regarding experiential marketing efforts. This thesis conducted primary research in the form of in-depth interviews to understand how current experiential marketers utilize academic models and understandings of experiential marketing. Interview data suggests that most brands stage experiences strategically based on their brand elements. In-depth interviews revealed that brands use academic frameworks as a reference point rather than a guide. Accurately measuring relevant metrics remains the largest challenge of Experience Marketing. An Examination of Communication Practices of Successful Entrepreneur Business Women in the Masculine Business/Corporate Environment
abstract: As young women merge into the business world, the business environment structure often asks them to adjust or change their identity to be accepted by their male peers. Such identity changes include adopting masculine forms of professional dress, building relationships in the workplace, and dealing with personal life. Through a qualitative research methodology, the study explores the communication practices that women engage in to succeed in the masculine business/corporate environment. Research indicates various types of limitations in masculine environments in connection with the flexibility of schedule, equal pay, and balance between professional and family life, leading to emotional and psychological impacts. Moreover, findings indicate the use of resistance tools to assist women in the corporate/business environment in leadership mentoring, education, and information found on apps and social media. I highlight practical implications, discuss limitations, and provide recommendations for future directions. (abstract
Pandemic Nursing School from the Student Perspective
abstract: COVID-19 has drastically impacted the student learning experience this past year. Arizona State University nursing students have had to learn fundamental nursing education, clinical experience, and simulation skills virtually. Research has shown that the educational experience during the COVID-19 pandemic has caused psychological and emotional stress on students adjusting to new university protocols and virtual learning. Two Term 8 nursing students questioned how these changes affected nursing students who are in their final semester of nursing school. The Term 8 nursing cohort was invited to participate in an anonymous online survey to provide feedback about their learning experience and recommendations for program leadership. The qualitative data was analyzed through content analysis to underline themes that portrayed the nursing students’ learning experience. The following themes were illuminated: an overall negative impact on virtual learning experiences, self-developed efforts to promote success, the aversion of using an online learning platform, and the desire for academic accommodation and faculty support during this time. Student recommendations for program leadership include requesting more hands-on experience when possible along with increased faculty lenience and understanding with course workload. Students had the opportunity to participate in a study where feedback is taken seriously and will be supplied to leadership to make changes to the ongoing academic dilemmas during the pandemic. Exploring Synthesis Strategies Towards Spherical Cr2GaC
abstract: MAX phases are layered hexagonal early transition metal carbides, sometimes nitrides, where M is an early transition metal, A is an A group element, most prominently groups 13 or 14, and X is either carbon or nitrogen.1 They are gaining a lot of attention because of their unusual properties. Particularly, their hardness, chemical stability at room temperature, and high melting points. These properties provide a material that is viable for a wide range of demanding applications.2,3 MAX phases display a combination of both ceramic and metallic characteristics. Furthermore, they also serve as a precursor for two-dimensional MXenes.4,5
Generally, bulk synthesis of MAX phases is done through traditional solid state synthesis techniques. For example, three solid state synthesis techniques include solid state method, hot pressing and arc melting and annealing. During solid state method, the powder precursors are preheated between 350 and 400°C, allowing for decomposition of starting reagents and removal of volatile products leaving only the oxides. At this point the germination phase has completed, and the crystal growth phase begins. Under the effect of a concentration gradient and very high temperatures, cations migrate, forming well-ordered layers. Slow cooling rates are used in order to ensure crystallinity of the product.6 The second method, hot pressing, involves the mixing of powder precursors thoroughly and then cold pressed into a green body – a ceramic body powder pre-sintering. They are then heated under vacuum and often high pressure in order to form the product. Two variants of hot-pressing exits: reactive hot pressing, where the pressure during the reaction will vary throughout the reaction, and isostatic hot pressing, where the pressure is held constant throughout the entire reaction.7 Another solid-state technique is arc melting and annealing. During arc melting, alternating current is applied to the electrode inside an inert reactor, which is arranged as to generate an arc discharge. The heat produced by arcing causes rapid melting of the samples.8 While these methods are most common, they are not always viable due to the specialized equipment required in order to achieve the high temperature and pressure conditions. Furthermore, these specific techniques don’t allow for high control over particle size and morphology.
Because of this, alternative, non-conventional synthesis techniques have been developed involving more readily available tube furnaces and microwaves, which lack the extreme pressures instead opting for ambient conditions.9 Sol-gel techniques have been developed by the group of Christina Birkel, and have successfully produced MAX phases through calcination of homogeneous citric acid-based gel-precursors. Some advantages of using these gel-precursors include shorter diffusion paths, and faster mass transport, thus, resulting in lower reaction temperatures and shorter reaction times. Ultimately, this allows for control over particle morphology and size.10
The focus of this work is to discover optimal synthesis conditions to create spherical Cr2GaC. Spherical MAX phases have been briefly explored in existing literature using polymer-based hollow microsphere templates.10 These polymer microspheres have been used to synthesize spherical metal oxides. This is achieved by heating the metal oxide precursors which adhere to the spheres, then by thermal treatment, the template is then removed.11
Two different microsphere templates will be explored to study the advantages and disadvantages of different size distributions and surface conditions of the spheres. Furthermore, reaction temperature, reaction time, citric acid equivalents, and gel to microsphere ratio will be altered to determine optimal synthesis parameters for depositing Cr2GaC onto spherical templates. Cr2GaC serves as a model compound because it has been successfully synthesized through sol-gel chemistry in the past.10 This phase will be prepared through non-conventional sol-gel chemistry, with various heating profiles, both furnace and microwave, and will be characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Rietveld refinement. Further, the morphology and atomic composition will be analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). (abstract
