Opportunities for Growth: Capitalization of Current Trends Relating to the Commercial Construction Industry
abstract: Executive Casework, Inc. is a custom commercial mill working company based in San Jose, CA. Although the company originally only focused on cabinets, it has expanded to include custom reception desks and solid surface countertops to meet demand. The company founded by David and Mark Brown has humble beginnings, originally located in Mark’s garage. Over the last two decades, the company has seen astronomical growth buoyed up by the fast increase in commercial real estate in Silicon Valley.
However, the company is currently facing considerable uncertainty like many others in the industry. These resulting overhead costs, when paired with future uncertainty of demand created by geopolitical trends, work from home, and Covid-19, create a notable problem for Executive Casework, Inc. As such, this thesis will focus on strategic steps Executive Casework, Inc. can make to capitalize on current macrocosmic trends, as well as trends within their own industry. More specifically, it will be a strategic analysis identifying the key external forces driving the fluctuating revenues in the commercial custom mill working industry, followed by an analysis of these external forces (magnitude and longevity). We will end with a framework for capitalizing on these trends by organizationally and physically placing a company like our exemplar company, Executive Casework, in the best position to realize maximum profitability. The Regenerative Confluence of Water
abstract: The intent of this study is to develop a new eco-cultural design model of development for the Salt River watershed and surrounding areas with renewed respect for the land in modern society. It includes both conceptual and practical community guides to facilitate and catalyze a new community-driven typology of planning prepared for rapid community change and climate challenges. This study includes the review of prominent existing projects, both regionally and globally, with expertise in the areas of urban development, culture and place keeping/making, ecology and water management. This study aims to exhibit the diverse components of urbanism and its effects on the Salt River corridor, surrounding urban ecosystems and climate. This thesis argues for simultaneous and codependent cultural and ecological growth and healing, and its necessity for sustainable urban development. Lastly, an urban revitalization framework is manifested in a community-oriented handbook based on key findings to produce a unified vision executed by watershed community co-design of the Phoenix metropolitan area. On the Viability of GSR As Evidence From Flies and their Pupae
abstract: In this experiment, the viability of gunshot residue (GSR) was examined. This was done through the very rarely researched intersection of forensic firearms analysis and forensic entomology. The question being resolved is if GSR can reliably be detected from secondary evidence transfer of GSR laden carrion onto flies and their larvae. While it is know that secondary and tertiary GSR evidence can be transferred by way of handshakes, no such research has been conducted on flies or their pupae. Findings indicated varying levels of detection of GSR on evidence. GSR could reliably be detected on fly bodies and their legs, but not on their pupae. This research is significant as it provides previously unknown information on this line of research and provides the groundwork for further research on this topic in the future. (abstract
Image Recognition Software Reveals Potential for Detection of Hypolith Colonization in the Namib Desert
abstract: Drylands, though one of the largest biomes, are also one of the most understudied biomes on the planet. This leaves scientists with limited understanding of unique life forms that have adapted to live in these arid environments. One such life form is the hypolithic microbial community; these are autotrophic cyanobacteria colonies that can be found on the underside of translucent rocks in deserts. With the light that filters through the rock above them, the microbes can photosynthesize and fix carbon from the atmosphere into the soil. In this study I looked at hypolith-like rock distribution in the Namib Desert by using image recognition software. I trained a Mask R-CNN network to detect quartz rock in images from the Gobabeb site. When the method was analyzed using the entire data set, the distribution of rock sizes between the manual annotations and the network predictions was not similar. When evaluating rock sizes smaller than 0.56 cm2 the method showed statistical significance in support of being a promising data collection method. With more training and corrective effort on the network, this method shows promise to be an accurate and novel way to collect data efficiently in dryland research. (abstract
WHY TO INVEST IN FRONTIER ECONOMIES IN AFRICA, AND HOW INVESTORS CAN MINIMIZE RISK AND MAXIMIZE
abstract: Frontier markets is a section of the business world where a lot of money could be made but is often overlooked for different reasons. A big reason is that there are a lot of unknowns about investing in these markets. With any business investments comes risk, but through proven years of research and following trends a lot of that risk can become hedged. With knowledge there comes power and, in this context, with taking the time to learn about underdog markets such as frontier markets comes great investment opportunities. This thesis will look to analyze three Sub-Sahara African countries of Tanzania, Kenya, and Ghana; and will answer the questions of why to invest in frontier economies in Africa, and how investors can minimize risk and maximize returns. Exploration of Lunar Contingency Devices
abstract: The Micro-g NExT 2019 challenge set out to find a new device to replace the Apollo mission lunar contingency sampler in preparation for the 2024 Artemis mission. The 2019 challenge set a series of requirements that would enable compatibility with the new xEMU suit and enable astronauts to effectively collect and secure an initial sample upon landing. The final prototype developed by the team features a sliding plate design with each plate slightly shorter than the previous. The device utilizes the majority of the xEMU suit’s front pocket volume while still allowing space for the astronaut’s hand and the bag for the sample. Considering safety concerns, the device satisfies NASA’s requirements for manual handheld devices and poses no threat to the astronaut under standard operation. In operation, the final design experiences an acceptable level stress in the primary use direction, and an even less in the lateral direction. Using assumptions such as the depth and density of lunar soil to be sampled, the working factor of safety is about 2 for elastic deformation, but the tool can still be operated and even collapsed at roughly double that stress. Unfortunately, the scope of this thesis only covers the effectiveness of resin prototypes and simulations of aluminum models, but properly manufactured aluminum prototypes are the next step for validating this design as a successor to the design used on the Apollo missions. Lighter Concrete: An In-Depth Analysis of the Effects of Recycled Plastic Aggregate in Composite Concrete
abstract: The scope of this project is a combination of material science engineering and mechanical engineering. Overall, the main goal of this project is to develop a lightweight concrete that maintains its original strength profile. Initial research has shown that a plastic-concrete composite could create a more lightweight concrete than that made using the typical gravel aggregate for concrete, while still maintaining the physical strength that concrete is known for. This will be accomplished by varying the amount of plastic in the aggregate. If successful, this project would allow concrete to be used in applications it would typically not be suitable for.
After testing the strength of the concrete specimens with varying fills of plastic aggregate it was determined that the control group experienced an average peak stress of 2089 psi, the 16.67% plastic group experienced an average peak stress of 2649 psi, the 33.3% plastic group experienced an average peak stress of 1852 psi, and the 50% plastic group experienced an average stress of 924.5 psi. The average time to reach the peak stress was found to be 12 minutes and 24 seconds in the control group, 15 minutes and 34 seconds in the 16.7% plastic group, 9 minutes and 45 seconds in the 33.3% plastic group, and 10 minutes and 58 seconds in the 50% plastic group. Taking the average of the normalized weights of the cylindrical samples it was determined that the control group weighed 14.773 oz/in, the 16.7% plastic group weighed 15 oz/in, the 33.3% plastic group weighed 14.573 oz/in, and the 50% plastic group weighed 12.959 oz/in. Based on these results it can be concluded that a small addition of plastic aggregate can be beneficial in creating a lighter, stronger concrete. The results show that a 16.7% fill ratio of plastic to rock aggregate can increase the failure time and the peak strength of a composite concrete. Overall, the experiment was successful in analyzing the effects of recycled plastic aggregate in composite concrete.
Some possible future studies related to this subject material are adding aluminum to the concrete, having better molds, looking for the right consistency in each mixture, mixing for each mold individually, and performing other tests on the samples. (abstract
Three-dimensional Supernova Models Provide New Insights into the Origins of Stardust
abstract: We present the isotope yields of two post-explosion, three-dimensional 15 M_sol core-collapse supernova models, 15S and 15A, and compare them to the carbon, nitrogen, silicon, aluminum, sulfur, calcium, titanium, iron, and nickel isotopic compositions of presolar SiC stardust. We find that material from the interior of a core-collapse supernova can form a rare subset of SiC stardust, called SiC D grains, characterized by enrichments of the isotopes 13C and 15N. The innermost material of these core-collapse supernovae is operating in the neutrino-driven regime and undergoes rapid proton capture early in the explosion, providing these isotopes which are not present in such large abundances in other stardust grains of supernova origin

abstract: Electric vehicles (EV’s) are quickly expanding in California. Improved battery technology, range, more competitive cost
compared to gas cars, incentives and legislation have all led EV’s into the mainstream car market. Recently, Governor
Newsom signed an executive order to require that all new passenger cars sold in California be zero-emission vehicles by
2035 making it the first state in the U.S. to do so. However, many cities are not ready for this massive shift to electric
vehicles yet play a crucial role in helping to expand EV infrastructure and support policies that help the transition. While
the state of California has made tremendous strides reducing CO2 from power plants with a major pivot to renewable
energy, the same can’t be said for the transportation sector which represents approximately 40% of California’s overall
emissions. California will be unable to meet its state climate and air quality goals without a major shift to zero emission
vehicles. Although deploying EV chargers can be a complex process with many different stakeholders, the Electric
Vehicle Readiness Plan (EVRP) provides California city planners with information to assist them in expanding critically
needed EV infrastructure. EVRP serves as a guide to understanding the EV market, basics of EV charging, incentives,
legislation, potential project partners, and also makes specific recommendations for cities to expand EV infrastructure to
make EV charging more accessible now and for future EV drivers in cities across California
Merger Arbitrage: Risk, Return, Replication and Simulation
abstract: This paper discusses merger arbitrage as a trading strategy, the benefits of allocating it into a diversified portfolio, and a method of replicating its returns through an alternative investment strategy (writing uncovered index put options). It discusses the approach to implementation, along with the risk and reward profile of the strategy. The paper entitled Characteristics of Risk and Return in Merger arbitrage is used as a basis for the research approach. An up-to-date time series analysis is constructed utilizing the HFRMAI index (a hedge fund index that mirrors a sizable sample of merger risk arbitrage transactions) as a benchmark for testing the effectiveness of the replication strategy (PUT index). Lastly, a live merger arbitrage strategy is executed on a current M&A transaction (the LVMH and Tiffany & Co. acquisition) to assess the acquirer and target firms’ stock volatility and profits or losses
