Modern Threats to American Democracy: A Study of 21st-Century Declines in Civic Engagement
abstract: This project offers an argument that isolates several major forces that it contends pose a critical threat to the endurance of modern American democracy. It evaluates modern and classic political philosophy to identify the prerequisites for a stable democracy, identifying and defining voter education and participation as necessary contributors to civic engagement. It provides a socio-legal framework for evaluating four phenomena that have shifted in their impact on politics over the past 20 years: the roles of money and media in politics, as well as disenfranchisement by gerrymandering and by felon voting restrictions. It demonstrates how each has a new and worsening impact on voter education and/or participation, thus threatening the continued existence of modern American democracy. (abstract
How Pharmaceutical Patents Affect Pharmaceutical Pricing in Developed Nations
abstract: Patent protection creates an encouraging environment for innovation, but it can be a hindrance to the availability of new medications. There are many countries that still harbor this competition while ensuring that all citizens have access to these medications. There are downsides to certain patent systems, but with a few modifications they can be remedied to achieve the highest level of access, quality of care, and best cost for the insured. In most of the countries reviewed, the patent system is thoroughly regulated with the consumers in mind. There are opportunities for manufacturers to create generic and cost effective medications within the typical patent protection timeline to ensure access to new medications. The systems that are in place encourage innovation with medical devices and medication by providing incentives for the researchers. (abstract
American Logistics Aid Network Process Improvement and Optimization Project
abstract: American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) is a non-profit logistics aid firm that provides supply chain assistance to non-profit organizations in times of crisis. It acts somewhat as a non-profit 3PL, connecting nonprofits seeking humanitarian aid goods, materials handling equipment, warehousing, logistics transportation, and expertise to an outstanding network of partner companies and organizations who help to deliver on their requests. In June of 2020, our team began an internship to identify and implement key process improvements for ALAN’s internal and external processes. This thesis is a summary of our findings, our solutions proposal, and their applicability to other non-profit organizations
