International observatory and comparative evaluations on urban and architectural heritage integrated methodologies for a knowledge of the Brescia station
[ENG] As part of the scientific agreements between University of Rome Sapienza and the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, studies have been developed to deepen the knowledge of the Italian-Argentine architectural heritage through drawing and surveying activities, including the research and teaching experience about the Lombard heritage here reported. In the activity of Visiting Professor, carried out remotely at the University of Brescia in 2020, seminars were organized to clarify the relationships between buildings and architects. Those interactions attest the richness of the Italy/Argentina migration phenomenon. The same experience, repeated in 2024, triggered a reflection on the effectiveness of the inperson activity carried out in Brescia Station Square. In the workshop the students experimented the use of life-drawing as a tool for understanding and researching a common lexicon, which testifies to the existence of a cultural bridge between those countries. They experienced a direct and immersive knowledge experience where the dialogue between observer and urban heritage stimulates and suggests valorization proposals. The results of the study of the city, the urban context and the building, presented in two boards, made it possible to verify through drawing the relationship between the two countries under consideration. Many focus were displayed: historical and socio-cultural moments, argentine references, building qualities and sensorial aspects. Communicative research, conceptual investigation, personal reflections and a global reading were evaluated. Drawing, an important tool for perception, critical analysis and autonomy with respect to computer programs, has a very important role for developing the skills necessary for the training of architects. Psychosocial risks in the construction sector
[ENG] Psychosocial risks refer to aspects of working conditions that can negatively impact workers’ health, leading to issues such as stress, physical, verbal, or psychological violence, or burnout among employees. These problems often are the result of poor management or organizational practices within a company. This project aims to carry out a general analysis of the construction sector, identifying and assessing these risks, while also providing guidance to employers on how to reduce them. Effect of the partial replacement of inorganic fertilizers by biofertilizers on greenhouse gas emissions from an agricultural soil
[ENG] The Region of Murcia, characterised by its semiarid climate and its high sensitivity to climate change, has increasingly degraded soils due to decades of intensive agricultural management. Agriculture acts as one of the main sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) depending on the type of crop, tillage or fertilisers used. Partial substitution of mineral fertilisers by biofertilisers can be a sustainable alternative to maintain agricultural production while reducing GHG emissions. In this context, this Master Thesis evaluates the effect of the use of biofertilisers as a partial alternative to inorganic fertilisers in a potato crop, through the analysis of emissions of CO2, N2O and CH4. For this purpose, a potato crop was established with four treatments: i) 100% inorganic fertilization (F100); ii) 50% inorganic fertilization (F50); iii) 50% inorganic fertilisation + biofertiliser (bacteria) and iv) 50% inorganic fertilisation + biofertiliser (bacteria + fungi). The results showed that crop yield was not affected by the different fertilization treatments. However, the mean tuber weight and firmness were significantly higher under the bacteria + fungi treatment, indicating an improvement in product quality. CO₂ emission rates decreased by 25%, 34%, and 42% with the F50, bacteria + fungi, and bacteria treatments, respectively, compared to F100. N₂O and CH₄ emissions were not affected by the treatments. Therefore, the partial replacement of mineral fertilizers with microorganism-based formulations appears to be a sustainable strategy to maintain high yields while simultaneously reducing soil CO₂ emissions.Escuela Técnica superior de Ingeniería AgronómicaUniversidad Politécnica de Cartagen
The oval shape in cloister design: the case study of the Church of Sant Antoni de Viana in Palma de Mallorca
[ENG] This contribution forms part of the ongoing research on the use of the oval form in cloisters, first initiated with the study of the cloister of Santa Maria della Sanità in Naples and now extended to the broader European architectural context. Within this framework, the paper presents investigations on the cloister of Sant Antoni de Viana in Palma de Mallorca, a remarkable example of Baroque architecture, though currently inaccessible to the public. By employing methods and tools of Architectural Drawing, the study fosters renewed “accessibility” to the knowledge of the site, in synergy with the PRIN 2022 project EX-IN_AccessiBILITY, which aims to develop new models for the enjoyment and dissemination of religious heritage. The research adopted integrated digital surveying methodologies, relying on well-established photogrammetric practices. This approach ensured the documentation of the site through conventional graphic representations, while also enabling in-depth geometric analyses of its polycentric planimetric matrix, thereby facilitating comparisons with the cloister of Santa Maria della Sanità. Furthermore, the use of advanced modeling techniques constitutes a key asset for future initiatives of dissemination and virtual accessibility, harnessing the potential of contemporary ICT technologies. In addition to expanding studies on the complex of Santa Maria della Sanità, the investigation contributes to the understanding of a heritage asset that has so far received limited attention within the scientific community. It also inaugurates a line of research aimed at classifying cloister typologies based on non-traditional planimetric matrices. In this perspective, by developing an interconnected network of studies through the comparison of distinct examples, the research broadens the understanding of the diffusion and transformations of such typologies within both the European and extra-European architectural panorama.
Beyond the screen: hand-drawn life representation in the age of metaverse
[ENG] This study explores the significance of hand-drawn life drawing in architectural education within a context increasingly dominated by digital tools. It aims to emphasize the cognitive and transcendental potential of drawing as an immersive and analytical learning practice. The research is based on the course Methods for the Representation and Modelling of the City and Territory at the University of Bologna. Students engage in on-site hand-drawing exercises across urban spaces, focusing on public areas and natural elements. The methodology prioritizes direct observation and includes exercises in proportionality, light and shadow, and the depiction of figures, architecture, and landscapes. Students demonstrated improved technical and perceptual skills. Their drawings showed greater accuracy in representing spatial relationships, proportions, and natural and human forms. They developed stronger visual analysis capabilities, learning to balance detail with thematic hierarchy and improving their overall architectural representation. As a case study based on a single academic course, findings may not be universally generalizable. However, they offer valuable insights into pedagogical approaches combining analog and digital tools. The findings support integrating hand-drawing practices into curricula to cultivate spatial awareness, observational accuracy, and critical thinking. Encouraging on-site drawing fosters a deeper connection between students and the urban environments they study, enhancing sensitivity to social and spatial dynamics. The study reinforces the value of hand-drawing as an irreplaceable tool for critical analysis and spatial understanding. It argues that the manual act of drawing nurtures a deeper connection between observer and subject, making it essential to architectural education even in the digital. La ricerca si basa sul corso Methods for the Representation and Modelling of the City and Territory dell’Università di Bologna.
Evolution of employment in Spain in the period 2014-2024 according to educational level
The purpose of this final degree project is to analyze the relationship between academic studies and employability in Spain during the period between 2014 and 2024. The study will address how the weight of different educational levels such as secondary education, technical training and university studies, among others, in the active population has evolved, and how each of them has been associated with different rates of employment, unemployment and underemployment. The aim is to identify which levels of training have experienced the greatest improvement in terms of analyses show a growth in employment with an increasing presence of women in the labour market in absolute and proportional terms. On the other hand, the increase in the number of people with university or technical education in the labour market is confirmed, to the detriment of those with lower levels of education. The obvious relationship between the evolution of employment and that of economic activity represented by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) can be qualified by pointing out a greater association with the share of GDP associated with services. The wage gap established by the educational level is obvious, and it can serve as a stimulus for the population to set educational objectives in their life projects.Facultad de Ciencias de la EmpresaUniversidad Politécnica de Cartagen
GIS and BIM in urbanistic management process
[ENG] Reparcelling is an urban planning operation aimed at the equitable distribution of benefits and burdens within an Action Unit. This study proposes a methodology to replace traditional CAD tools in the Reparcelling Project with more advanced, reliable, precise and efficient technologies. To achieve this, two key technologies were proposed: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM). First, GIS software was employed to analyze cadastral data, the current state of the area, and applicable regulations, establishing an initial workflow for the reparcelling process. In the second phase, BIM technology was utilized to develop the Reparcelling Project and manage the Action Unit in detail. BIM enabled precise calculations, such as determining the percentage of land allocated to each owner, as well as urbanization aspects, including road networks, administrative transfers, or infrastructure planning. Finally, the efficiency of GIS and BIM was compared in terms of data input and processing. The results highlight the advantages of the proposed methodologies over traditional methods, demonstrating its potential to enhance accuracy, streamline workflows, and improve decision-making in Reparcelling Projects.
Calculation of flexibility in a desalination plant piping system
[ENG] The analysis of flexibility in a piping system focuses on evaluating the behavior of the respective pipes in response to stresses and deformations that may arise when transporting fluids at high temperatures or when the pipes are of considerable length. In this way, the efficiency, safety, and durability of the infrastructure are ensured. Its main advantages include reducing stresses, optimizing the design, increasing the system’s lifespan, improving pipe safety, minimizing maintenance costs, and ensuring compliance with the required regulations. This analysis assesses how pressure changes and external forces affect the system’s structure, as structural flexibility not only prevents fractures but also reduces the risk of leaks and collapses.Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería IndustrialUniversidad Politécnica de Cartagen
Reconstruction, subdivision and multiresolution algorithms in several dimensions
• Extensión a mallados no uniformes del artículo” Interpolation and approximation of piecewise smooth functions”. [ENG] Introduction. This thesis presents advances in nonlinear reconstructions, subdivision, and multiresolution schemes, with applications including numerical integration. Objectives. The thesis addresses the following objectives: • Develop a theory for multiresolution algorithms with error control strategies and implement the necessary codes. • Extend the technique for singularity detection and approximation of functions with disconti-nuities in the first derivative to non-uniform meshes, based on the work by F. Ar`andiga, A. Cohen, R. Donat, and N. Dyn. • Define and study a reconstruction technique of any desired order using Hermite segmentary interpolation combined with a discontinuity detection algorithm. • Analyze the error formula of the closed Newton-Cotes rules for numerical integration and study the Peano Kernel versus other techniques unsuitable for high-order approximation methods. Methodology. The methodologies follow standard scientific practices. Initially, a review of state-of-the-art techniques is conducted to establish the research landscape, analyzing existing methods and identifying their strengths and limitations. The new idea is then introduced and analyzed in-depth, with theoretical proofs provided to substantiate the main properties of the proposed numerical method. Numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the practical applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method, comparing results with existing techniques to illustrate improvements and advantages. Main Results and Conclusions. The thesis introduces and analyzes four numerical techniques: • N-dimensional multiresolution algorithms for point value discretization, with and without error control strategies, deriving explicit stability error bounds in the l1, l2, and l∞ norms. Error control algorithms allow specifying the quality of reconstructed data and enable the use of otherwise unstable nonlinear schemes. Implementation instructions highlight that nonlinear stable reconstructions perform better with discontinuities. Experiments show that while error control algorithms require more computational effort, the increase is not significantly high. • Extension of a corner detection mechanism to σ quasi-uniform grids, with theoretical approximation orders confirmed through numerical experiments. • Definition of a combined reconstruction algorithm involving corner detection and piecewise Hermite reconstruction, maintaining the same approximation order as the original method, with numerical experiments confirming theoretical results. • Examination of the incompleteness in the extended proof of closed Newton-Cotes error formulas for numerical integration, emphasizing the importance of rigorous logical arguments.Escuela Internacional de Doctorado de la Universidad Politécnica de CartagenaUniversidad Politécnica de CartagenaPrograma de Doctorado en Tecnologías Industriale
