Geotechnical aspects of decommissioning tailings storage facilities (TSF) in mining districts of Southern Spain
Production practices in the mining industry during the last century have left numerous inactive facilities that current administrations have to deal with. In the case of tailings storage, the risk of pollution dispersion or large-scale damage caused by stability failures requires specific actions. In southern Spain, 28 abandoned tailings dams in the mining districts of Mazarrón, Cartagena and La Unión and 59 in the mining districts located in Andalucian Provinces, have been classified as hazardous for potential pollution risk, according to European regulations. In this document, we gather the experiences of 23 case studies in tailing decommission projects planned during the 2010-24 period, focusing on the most recent case of the San Cristobal-II tailings dam (SC-II). The actions conducted consist essentially of sealing, introduction of drainage elements, slope reprofiling and surface revegetation. The geotechnical characterization and monitoring conducted during decommissioning have emphasized that action must focus on pore water pressure control throughout all the phases of the project. The analysis of the actions involved in the decommissioning projects shows some positive experiences but also the need to improve in-depth geotechnical data acquisition, to ensure long-term safety while optimizing the decommissioning costs. This work is a result of the research stay 22427/ EE/24 promoted by the Fundación Séneca-Agencia de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Región de Murcia and financed by the Programa Regional de Movilidad, Colaboración e Intercambio de Conocimiento “Jiménez de la Espada”. It is also an outcome of a collaboration within the Commission on Geological and Water Resources of the Geosciences Connection, a joint initiative between the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT). We thank the technicians of the Servicio de Minas de la Dirección General de Energía y Actividad Industrial y Minera de la CARM and the Agencia de Medio Ambiente y Agua M.P. of the Junta de Andalucía for access to tailing inventory data. Beyond grammar. Can AI undestand the nuanaces of academic writing?
On July 4, 2024, the free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude were evaluated for their effectiveness in grading technical English assignments in an academic context. The study sought to determine ifthese AI platforms could serve as reliable grading tools by analyzing their responses to two sets of papers. The first set contained original student submissions written in technical English, while the second consisted of the same papers rewritten in grammatically correct but academically incoherent language. The AI models provided three grading suggestions for each assignment and were also asked to assign a final grade. These AI-generated grades were then compared with the grades given through traditional manual grading by educators. The analysis focused on the consistency of the AI's grading, its alignment with human assessments, and its ability to distinguish between technical precision and overall linguistic coherence. The findings contribute to ongoing discussions about the role of AI in education, particularly in the assessment of academic writing. This study highlights the potential benefits and limitations of using AI as a grading tool, emphasizing the need for further refinement before such systems can be reliably implemented in academic settings
Dynamic optical monitoring with an ESP32-CAM-based low-cost spectrophotometric prototype
Real-time optical monitoring of large area dynamic color systems remains a technical challenge, particularly when aiming for low-cost, portable, and scalable solutions. In this study, we present a spectrophotometric platform based on an Arduino-compatible ESP32-CAM, a modular 3D-printed prototype, and a custom Python interface capable of reconstructing visible-range transmittance spectra (400–700 nm) from RGB images based on a neural network protocol. The system enables real-time visualization of both full spectral evolution and single-wavelength transmittance during any process of color switching, offering valuable insight into optical kinetics without requiring expensive instrumentation.
To validate its performance, thin films of five electrochromic polymers covering visible gamut color transitions (orange, magenta, cyan, green, and black) were analyzed under color-changing dynamic conditions. The transmittance evolution and reconstructed spectra obtained using the Arduino system were compared against those acquired from a reference spectrophotometer and a previously validated digital camera-based method. Results showed excellent agreement across most polymers, with deviations in transmittance values remaining below 4% even in the most challenging cases. The developed interface allows users to select specific areas of interest and control time resolution, while all data can be exported for further analysis. Additionally, all captured images are stored for subsequent high-accuracy post-processing using color correction and spectral reconstruction models. This work introduces a robust, accessible tool for dynamic optical analysis that maintains competitive performance compared to conventional systems. Its versatility, portability, and real-time functionality make it particularly suited for the in-situ optical evaluation of surfaces, smart materials and devices in both laboratory and field environments. This work was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIN)through project PID2022-139191OB-C32 and grant CNS2023-144331 funded by MCIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, “ERDF A way of making Europe”, and “European Union Next Generation EU/PRTR”

[ENG] This Bachelor’s Thesis addresses the manufacturing and preliminary testing of a hybrid Darrieus–Savonius vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT), intended for potential integration in urban environments. It is a continuation of the previous TFG titled “Diseño de un aerogenerador de eje vertical de pequeña potencia para uso autónomo” and, based on the design obtained in that project, a full-scale (1:1) prototype was manufactured using a combination of manufacturing processes, with 3D printing playing a key role in the production of the blades.Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería IndustrialUniversidad Politécnica de Cartagen
