Cardiac Performance with Chronic Hypoxia: Mechanisms regulating stroke volume
When humans are exposed to high altitude hypoxia for a sustained period, the cardiac stroke volume is reduced. The changes in cardiac performance seen at high altitude are a result of complex and concomitant changes in preload, afterload and contractility, although the precise mechanisms underpinning the decrease in stroke volume are not known despite being of scientific interest for over fifty years. In this review, we briefly revisit the seminal work performed in the area before focusing on recent developments that have applied mechanistic experimental models and novel imaging technologies to further understand why stroke volume is decreased in chronic hypoxia. The role of early experience and continued language use in bilingual speech production: A study of Galician and Spanish mid vowels by Galician-Spanish bilinguals
This paper examines the vowel productions of three groups of adult Galician-Spanish bilinguals: Spanish-dominant (SD) bilinguals, Galician-dominant (GD) bilinguals, and Dual Switch (DS) bilinguals who had early experience with Galician in the home, predominantly used Spanish upon school entry, but in adolescence/adulthood switched to Galician for ideological reasons.
To examine how linguistic experience with Galician and Spanish affected the participants’ speech, a cued picture-naming task, conducted in unilingual and code switched conditions, was used to elicit the Galician mid vowel contrasts /e-ɛ/ and /o-ɔ/ and the Spanish mid vowels /e/ and /o/.
The results revealed no difference in either condition in normalised F1 and F2 across the front and back vowels in the two languages. These patterns not only held for the SD bilinguals, for whom vowel mergers were expected, but also the DS and GD bilinguals. As such, the study is the first to document widespread mergers of Galician mid-vowels in bilinguals with extensive early Galician language experience and regular use, and to demonstrate overlap with Spanish mid-vowel categories. The findings suggest that psycholinguistic factors, such as age of acquisition or language use, can only partially explain the data and that input-related and socio-indexical factors are equally critical in understanding the acquisition and maintenance of language-specific speech patterns
Maintenance of behaviour change following a community-wide gamification based physical activity intervention
Gamification refers to the use of game mechanics (e.g. competition, point scoring, progress visualisation and task setting) to engage and motivate people to achieve an end goal. Public health programs that incorporate gamification-based approaches which aim to improve the public's health have grown in popularity, however most commonplace are individualistic, smartphone-based applications and few studies have been conducted on community-wide interventions. Furthermore, the few studies which have been conducted have relied on small sample sizes with short-term follow-up. In view of this gap in current understanding, this study explored the impact of a community-wide gamified intervention, called ‘Beat the Street’ (in Reading UK) on levels of physical activity at 1 and 2-years post-intervention (between 2014 and 2016). Data were available for N = 1567 participants at one-year post-intervention and N = 723 participants at 2-years post-intervention. A Pretest-Posttest analysis revealed a 11% and 13% decrease in levels of inactivity at 1 and 2-years post-intervention respectively. Furthermore, participants who were inactive at baseline reported undertaking 3.4 and 3.8 days of activity at 1 and 2-years post-intervention, respectively. These findings provide promising preliminary evidence that gamification may be effective for decreasing physical inactivity and game-design mechanisms which may support behaviour change are discussed
Prolonged systemic inflammation and damage to the vascular endothelium following intratracheal instillation of air pollution nanoparticles in rats
BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution is associated with cardiovascular disease, including increased morbidity and mortality rates.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to assess the effect, in rats, of intratracheal instillation of particulate air pollution on biomarkers of leucocyte activation and vascular endothelial damage.
METHODS: Air pollution particles (PM10) were instilled into rats, and blood samples were taken three days and six weeks post instillation. Plasma neutrophil elastase and VonWillebrand factor were measured by ELISA.
RESULTS: Plasma neutrophil elastase increased from 175±44 ng/ml at baseline to 288±26 ng/ml 3 days post instillation (p=0.038). vWF increased from 0.160±0.015 IU/ml at baseline to 0.224±0.015 IU/ml at 3 days post and 0.208±0.01 IU/ml at 6 weeks post (p=0.006, ANOVA). sICAM-1 increased from 17.75±0.70 ng/ml at baseline to 19.03±0.33 ng/ml at 3 days post and 21.72±1.16 ng/ml at 6 weeks post (p=0.009, ANOVA).
CONCLUSION: Instillation caused prolonged systemic inflammation, activation of blood leucocytes and damage to the vascular endothelium
A Novel, Fast, Reliable, and Data-Driven Method for Simultaneous Single-Trial Mining and Amplitude—Latency Estimation Based on Proximity Graphs and Network Analysis
Both amplitude and latency of single-trial EEG/MEG recordings provide valuable information regarding functionality of the human brain. In this article, we provided a data-driven graph and network-based framework for mining information from multi-trial event-related brain recordings. In the first part, we provide the general outline of the proposed methodological approach. In the second part, we provide a more detailed illustration, and present the obtained results on every step of the algorithmic procedure. To justify the proposed framework instead of presenting the analytic data mining and graph-based steps, we address the problem of response variability, a prerequisite to reliable estimates for both the amplitude and latency on specific N/P components linked to the nature of the stimuli. The major question addressed in this study is the selection of representative single-trials with the aim of uncovering a less noisey averaged waveform elicited from the stimuli. This graph and network-based algorithmic procedure increases the signal-to-noise (SNR) of the brain response, a key pre-processing step to reveal significant and reliable amplitude and latency at a specific time after the onset of the stimulus and with the right polarity (N or P). We demonstrated the whole approach using electroencephalography (EEG) auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) recordings from 42 young healthy controls. The method is novel, fast and data-driven succeeding first to reveal the true waveform elicited by MMN on different conditions (frequency, intensity, duration, etc.). The proposed graph-oriented algorithmic pipeline increased the SNR of the characteristic waveforms and the reliability of amplitude and latency within the adopted cohort. We also demonstrated how different EEG reference schemes (REST vs. average) can influence amplitude-latency estimation. Simulation results revealed robust amplitude-latency estimations under different SNR and amplitude-latency variations with the proposed algorithm
Report Card Grades on the Physical Activity of Children and Youth Comparing 30 Very High Human Development Index Countries
Background: To better understand the childhood physical inactivity crisis, Report Cards on physical activity of children and youth were prepared concurrently in 30 very high Human Development Index countries. The aim of this article was to present, describe, and compare the findings from these Report Cards. Methods: The Report Cards were developed using a harmonized process for data gathering, assessing, and assigning grades to 10 common physical activity indicators. Descriptive statistics were calculated after converting letter grades to interval variables, and correlational analyses between the 10 common indicators were performed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients. Results: A matrix of 300 grades was obtained with substantial variations within and between countries. Low grades were observed for behavioral indicators, and higher grades were observed for sources of influence indicators, indicating a disconnect between supports and desired behaviors. Conclusion: This analysis summarizes the level and context of the physical activity of children and youth among very high Human Development Index countries, and provides additional evidence that the situation regarding physical activity in children and youth is very concerning. Unless a major shift to a more active lifestyle happens soon, a high rate of noncommunicable diseases can be anticipated when this generation of children reaches adulthood
The suit maketh the man: Masculinity and social class in Kingsman: The Secret Service (Vaughn, 2014)
This article outlines the ways in which suits are synonymous with masculinity examining the, sometimes paradoxical, nature of suits worn by men of all social classes, and for different reasons. For example, hegemonic men wear suits in a bid to convey power, arguably, by rendering the wearers uniform in appearance so that the focus is on what hegemonic men might say and do, rather than how they might look. Moreover, the uniformity of suits is a means by which men of a lower social class demonstrate aspiration to a higher social class and might affect hegemonic power through wearing them. While much has been written about masculinity and suits, with many authors agreeing that the bespoke suit is at the pinnacle of the hierarchy of men’s clothing, yet there is a little attention paid to the way in which the bespoke suit is represented in media or popular culture. This article examines the role of clothing of the main characters in the film Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) with a particular focus on the contribution that the bespoke suit makes to the masculinity of the bodies of the individuals within the film. Principally, the bespoke suit elevates the body of the wearer from quotidian to tailored, the fitting of which allows for better representation of a man’s body
Video observation of hand-hygiene compliance in a manufacturer of ready-to-eat pie and pastry products
Food-handler hand-hygiene can be a contributory factor for food-borne illness. Cognitive data (knowledge/attitudes/self-reported practices), while informative, are not indicative of behaviour, and are subject to biases. Consequently, observation of behaviour is superior to survey data. However, researcher presence in direct observation increases reactivity, whereas video observation gives comprehensive analysis over a longer period, furthermore, familiarity reduces reactivity. Although video observation has been used to assess food safety at retail/foodservice, this valuable method is under-utilized in food-manufacturing environments. For the study, footage (24 h) was reviewed to assess compliance in a food-manufacturing site with company protocol. Video observation of food-handlers entering production (n = 674) was assessed; upon 70 occasions no attempt to implement hand-hygiene was observed. Of attempted hand-hygiene practices (n = 604), only 2% implemented compliant practices. Although 78% of attempts utilized soap, only 42% included sanitizer. Duration ranged from 1 to 69 s (Median 17 s). The study provides hand-hygiene data in an area that observational data is seldom captured
Two-dimensional frontal plane projection angle can identify subgroups of patellofemoral pain patients who demonstrate dynamic knee valgus
Background
Identifying individuals with patellofemoral pain who demonstrate similar modifiable factors including dynamic knee valgus may be useful in establishing subgroups of patients that can undergo individualised management strategies. However, a lack of objective assessment criteria means that the findings are of limited value to clinicians aiming to distinguish between patients with and without altered frontal plane knee kinematics. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate dynamic knee valgus in individuals with and without patellofemoral pain by determining frontal plane knee alignment during functional activity.
Methods
Thirty recreationally active individuals with patellofemoral pain and 30 non-injured individuals had frontal plane knee alignment assessed via two-dimensional analysis of the frontal plane projection angle during single limb stance and single limb squats to 60° of knee flexion.
Findings
Individuals with patellofemoral pain demonstrated excessive frontal plane knee alignment (P = .003; ES = 0.68) compared to uninjured participants during single limb squats. In addition, assessing frontal plane knee alignment using two-dimensional analysis had fair specificity and sensitivity of discriminating patellofemoral pain injury.
Interpretation
Clinical quantification of two-dimensional frontal plane knee alignment may be utilised to subgroup patients with patellofemoral pain that display dynamic knee valgus during single limb squats. Furthermore, this may be a useful clinical tool to determine individuals that may be at risk of developing pain in the future
