Die Präsenz des Internationalen Controller Vereins in der Hochschullehre

    No full text

Backscattering-Based Radiation Mode Analysis for Angle Estimation of a CRLH Leaky Wave Antenna

    No full text
Abstract. This study explores the extraction of the radiation mode field from backscattering field components of a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) leaky wave antenna (LWA) to estimate the relative angle to the radiation mode field within its frequency band of operation. Two methods, transmission line delay (TLD) and impedance loading (IL), for extracting the radiation mode from backscattering field components, are employed to isolate the radiation mode field of a CRLH LWA. In the IL method, backscattered fields are measured by terminating the CRLH LWA with short and open load impedances to express the radiation mode and structure mode field components. The TLD method uses a coaxial transmission line to connect the CRLH LWA to a high-gain X-band horn antenna, enabling isolation of the radiation mode field component from the backscattered field components, using time gating. This analysis employs two measurement setups for TLD, one in which both the CRLH LWA and the horn antenna rotate along the azimuth and the other in which only the CRLH LWA rotates. The analysis shows the frequency-angle relationship of the CRLH LWA radiation mode field, which reveals the frequency-dependent features of the CRLH LWA. Additionally, an evaluation of frequency ambiguity is done to provide more insights into the effectiveness of each approach for angle estimation of CRLH LWA relative to the incident wave

    Degrees-of-freedom penalized piecewise regression

Many popular piecewise regression models rely on minimizing a cost function on the model fit with a linear penalty on the number of segments. However, this penalty does not take into account varying complexities of the model functions on the segments potentially leading to overfitting when models with varying complexities, such as polynomials of different degrees, are used. In this work, we enhance on this approach by instead using a penalty on the sum of the degrees of freedom over all segments, called degrees-of-freedom penalized piecewise regression. We show that the solutions of the resulting minimization problem are unique for almost all input data in a least squares setting. We develop a fast algorithm that does not only compute a minimizer but also determines an optimal hyperparameter—in the sense of rolling cross validation with the one standard error rule—exactly. This eliminates manual hyperparameter selection. Our method supports optional user parameters for incorporating domain knowledge. We provide an open-source Python/Rust code for the piecewise polynomial least squares case which can be extended to further models. We demonstrate the practical utility through a simulation study and by applications to real data. A constrained variant of the proposed method gives state-of-the-art results in the Turing benchmark for unsupervised changepoint detection

Agency in Crisis - How Losing a Sense of Agency Contributed to the Development of Aggressive Attitudes and Behaviors in Refugee Hosting Communities on the Island of Lesvos

When the local communities of the Greek island of Lesvos first attracted media attention in 2015, locals displayed remarkable hospitality, engaged in acts of globally commended solidarity, and demonstrated unwavering compassion towards anyone arriving on their shores. However, the island underwent a profound transition when so called "refugee crisis" unfolded, and local communities increasingly resorted to aggression and acts of violence. This article puts forward the argument that one central contributing factor in the development of aggressive attitudes and behaviors in the local population of Lesvos, was losing a sense of agency, which occurred when international humanitarian actors arrived on the island to provide much needed relief. Combining conceptual frameworks with personal observations made on Lesvos between 2020 and 2021, the article examines the evolving situation on the island through three interconnected sections. Section 2 begins by exploring how local residents initially asserted their agency, drawing on historical migration patterns and highlighting a longstanding link between local identity and solidarity. Building on this foundation, section 3 then applies the frustration-aggression theory to analyze how this sense of agency began to diminish over time, and how its loss contributed to the emergence of increasingly aggressive attitudes and behaviors. This trajectory subsequently leads into section 4, which further describes the consequences of lacking agency, and examines the functions that the acts of violence occurring on the island may have served for those involved. Lastly, the implications of this analysis for actors in the humanitarian fi eld are discussed, and suggestions for further research are made

Quarterly on Refugee Problems (4, 2)

The editorial in this issue by Roßkopf recalls the neglected displacement crises around the world and invites submissions on these topics. Siraj examines the impact of declining humanitarian funding on the economic and food security of the Rohingya refugee group in Bangladesh. Mansour shows how the preservation of the Palestinian dialect in Lebanese exile over eight decades can be seen as an identity-forming response to marginalization. Kim & Sherry explore the dampening effect of hope and optimism on the otherwise expected reinforcing effect of self-efficacy on emotional exhaustion among employees and volunteers in the field of resettlement. Finally, the concrete implementation of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees is the subject of consideration by Mężykowska & Młynarska-Sobaczewska for Poland and Friedery for Hungary
