Intergroup discrimination in positive and negative outcome-allocations: Impact of stimulus valence, relative group status, and relative group size. Personality and Social Psychology
Three studies investigated the determination of social discrimination by the valence of stimuli that are allocated between groups. The studies were based on either the minimal group paradigm or a more reality-based laboratory intergroup setting, with stimulus valence, group status, and group size as factors and with pull scores on Taifel matrices as dependent variables. In general, the results showed that group members did not discriminate against the out-group when allocating negative stimuli, where as for positive stimuli the typical in-group bias was found. However, those participants whose positive social identity was threatened by assigning them to inferior or minority groups showed an increased willingness to favor the in-group over the out-group in the allocation of both positive and negative stimuli

Scenarios for the decarbonization of district heating: the case of Leipzig
This study derives the levelized cost of heat (LCOH) for exemplary post-fossil district heating (DH) scenarios. The DH system of Leipzig in 2040 under the assumption of a completely climate-neutral heat supply is considered. Accordingly, four generation scenarios (GS) are proposed based on different energy carriers that are characterized as follows: (1) natural gas with carbon capture and storage, (2) hydrogen, (3) diversified mix of biomass, waste heat and solar, and (4) electricity. In addition, the scenarios’ robustness toward commodity prices is investigated using a sensitivity analysis. A modeling environment was used to optimize the hourly economic dispatch. Based on this, levelized costs are determined. For the reference case, the LCOH of the GS 1 and 2 exceeds the LCOH of GS 3 and 4. Furthermore, the results indicate that relying on singular energy carriers as opposed to diversified generation portfolios leads to less robust LCOH regarding price sensitivities

Zugleich können wir mit neuen Technologien multiperspektivische und multisensorische Metabilder erzeugen, die unseren bisherigen Bildbegriff sprengen und uns modellhaft Wahrscheinlichkeiten über die Welt vermitteln.
Von prähistorischen Handabdrücken über Passbildportraits bis hin zu KI-generierten Bildern, die wie Fotos erscheinen, spannt Marcus Kaiser einen Bogen durch unsere Kultur des Lebens mit Bildern. Im Gespräch mit dem Kommunikationswissenschaftler Mario Donick zeigt der Autor anhand eigener experimentell forschender Arbeiten mit Fotografie, wie wechselseitig der Blick ist. Es wird deutlich, wie Bilder und besonders Fotografien auch aufgrund ihrer technischen Grundlagen Weltanschauungen implizieren und auf uns projizieren.
Leser*innen erfahren neben verschiedenen Konzepten der Bildgebung, wie wir analytisch und kritisch reflektierend mit Bildern umgehen und forschend mit dem Ziel des Erkenntnisgewinns Bilder herstellen können. Das wird angesichts der Möglichkeiten der KI-gesteuerten Bildgenerierung künftig eine wichtige Fähigkeit sein

Quantification of sulfur distribution on rubber surfaces by means of μ-X-ray fluorescence analysis
A homogeneous distribution of sulfur in a rubber compound is often desired. Spatially resolved imaging techniques are useful for evaluating the distribution of this crosslinking chemical. Typical measurement methods such as SEM (scanning electron microscopy) or TEM (transmission electron microscopy) have very high resolutions. However, the sample size or the maximum area to be investigated is limited, which makes it difficult to obtain a statistically reliable determination of sulfur homogeneity across the component or sample.
In this work, an alternative measurement technique is therefore presented: the μ-XRF (μ-X-ray fluorescence analysis). With the help of this method, it is possible to scan surfaces of several cm2 and to show the distribution of different chemical elements. Its measuring principle has been known for decades but has hardly been used in the rubber industry so far.
The main reason for this is that its quantification process for polymeric samples is more complex than for geologic or metallic samples, which are typically been investigated with μ-XRF to date. In this paper, this issue is addressed and a solution is presented: With the help of the fundamental parameter method, the determination of sulfur homogeneity and distribution on rubber surfaces becomes possible. This opens up a variety of further possibilities for the use of μ-XRF in the rubber industry: For example, it could be used in areas of tire production, recycling of end-of-life rubber, and beyond
