Identifying Partisan Efforts to Generate Authoritarian Legitimacy
Informed by the puzzle of differentiating between democratic and authoritarian legitimacy-generating actions, the chapter aims to propose and test a theoretical tool for measuring partisan efforts to generate a regime’s legitimacy. The study contributes theoretically to our understanding of generating a regime’s legitimacy by modifying and combining the theories of mind engineering and ideology-based education. The modification departs from normative significance-based evaluation of mind engineering consequences. This feature of mind engineering is replaced with a type of political system to capture what ideology it instills. Also, the chapter proposes sensitive criteria for differentiating between democratic and authoritarian frames. A methodological contribution lies in offering and testing a theory-based tool useful to unpack cognition- and behavior-oriented claims to democratic and authoritarian legitimacy. The new empirical approach uncovers the mechanisms of mind engineering aimed at influencing cognitive and behavioral aspects of the public’s involvement in supporting political systems. This work was supported by the National Science Centre, Poland (grant number 2021/43/B/HS5/00290)
Sold: Polish and Jewish Narratives of Women's Prostitution in Polish Lands from the Early 20th Century to 1939
The aim of my work is to analyze the literary motif of prostitution and trafficking in women in Polish and Jewish literature based on comparative research of fictional and non-fictional works of Polish and Yiddish literature in the historical and social context and in the light of feminist, anti- Semitic and gender studies discourses. I place marginalized and instrumentalized literary heroines involved in prostitution at the center of my considerations. The differences that, apart from linguistic issues, divided the two literatures (Polish and Yiddish), which developed right next to each other, can also be identified on the basis of discourse analysis. In this way, the main thesis of my work is crystallized, stating that Yiddish and Polish literature take up the ideologically charged and socially engaging topic of prostitution, joining the collective discussion among both ethnic and national groups on the most important topics and challenges related to modernity – starting with the emancipation of women and their education, through population migration, urbanization and industrialization, unemployment, and the modernization of social life. Just as complicated were the Polish-Jewish relations at that time, and thus the relations of both literatures, so tangled and entangled are the narratives about prostitution and trafficking in women.
Referring also to the Judeo-Christian religious tradition, I do not avoid pointing out the similarities and influences based on the dichotomies between the world of women and the world of men, rooted and emphasized in Jewish and Christian culture
Croatian inspirations for the writing activities of Bulgarian Catholics in the 18th and early 19th centuries
Do podstawowego korpusu analizy należą następujące dzieła: (1) Petar Bogdan Bakšić, Bogoglivbna razmiscglianya od otaystva odkupglienya csoviçanskoga, (2) Filip Stanislavov, Abagar, (3) Krsto Pejkić, Zarcalo istine med carkve istočne i zapadne, (4) Pavao Duvanlija Gajdadžijski, poezja (w tym religijna), (5) Petar Kovačev Carski, rękopisy modlitewników, (6) dzieła anonimowych autorów z końca XVIII i początku XIX wieku. W dysertacji przedstawiono biografie wszystkich autorów, a każde dzieło zostało wpisane w ramy przestrzenno-czasowe i genologiczne oraz usytuowane w kontekście historycznego rozwoju języka i literatury bułgarskiej. Przeprowadzenie ukierunkowanej analizy językowej umożliwiło wskazanie oraz szczegółowy opis elementów iliryjskich obecnych w ówczesnym języku bułgarskich katolików, uwzględniający płaszczyznę leksykalną, gramatyczną i ortograficzną. Pozwala to zauważyć, że autorzy pierwszego okresu – przedstawiciele cziprowskiej szkoły literatury paulicjan (Petar Bogdan Bakšić i Krsto Pejkić) – posługują się językiem iliryjskim lub korzystają z własnej redakcji tego języka (Filip Stanislavov), podczas gdy autorzy drugiego okresu, tj. szkoły płowdiwskiej (Pavao Duvanlija Gajdadžijski, Petar Kovačev Carski i anonimowi autorzy), tworzą język literacki na podstawie dialektu paulicjańskiego, z włączaniem mniejszej liczby iliryzmów.
The aim of the dissertation is to describe, define and analyze Croatian influences on Bulgarian Catholic writing in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Bulgarian Catholic literacture consists of the works written by Bulgarian Catholic priests since the 17th century for the needs of the Catholic faithful. The corpus of this study includes: (1.) Petar Bogdan Bakšić, Bogoglivbna razmiscglianya od otaystva odkupglienya csoviçanskoga, (2.) Filip Stanislavov, Abagar, (3.) Krsto Pejkić, Zarcalo istine med carkve istočne i zapadne, (4.) Pavao Duvanlija Gajdadžijski, spiritual and other poems, (5.) Petar Kovačev Carski, handwritten prayer books, (6.) works by anonymous authors from the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. All the authors’ biographies are presented and each of the works is defined in terms of space, time and genre, while special attention is paid to their place in the historical development of the Bulgarian language and literature. Following the focused linguistic analysis, the Illyrian elements in terms of spelling, grammar and lexis in the language of Bulgarian Catholics of the day are enumerated and described. It is evident that the authors of the first phase, that is, members of the Chiprovtsi School of Paulitian literature (Petar Bogdan Bakšić and Krsto Pejkić) use the Illyrian language or their own version of the Illyrian language (Filip Stanislavov), while the authors of the second phase, i.e., the authors of the Plovdiv School (Pavao Duvanlija Gajdadžijski, Petar Kovačev Carski and anonymous authors), create a standard language based on the vernacular with the inclusion of a small number of words derived from Illyrian
Multiscale Modelling of Biological Systems: A Computational Approach to Studying Natural Phenomena from Cellular to Ecological Levels
The study of natural phenomena gives rich opportunities for those interested in modelling and simulations. The challenge they present lies in the complexity and dynamic nature of such patterns. These processes, ranging from the cellular mechanisms to the environmental or ecological dynamics challenge our understanding and push the boundaries of traditional scientific disciplines.
This thesis shows the development and validation of several computational models that simulate complex biological processes. The goal of this dissertation is first to demonstrate that computational models can accurately replicate and predict complex biological systems across different scales; second to illustrate the necessity of diverse modelling approaches to address distinct biological phenomena; and third, to illustrate that mathematical models can be utilized to validate or challenge existing biological theories and identify areas requiring further investigation.
I present three models of specific natural phenomena validated against empirical data. These include a discrete model for vascular pattern formation in Arabidopsis thaliana, a continuous model of long-distance signalling in birch trees, and an advanced hybrid simulation of wildfires. The results supported the assumptions posed, Additionally, they allowed us to assess the applicability of modelling paradigms used in different scenarios
Left–right political orientation fails to explain environmental attitudes of Europeans outside Western Europe: exploring the moderating role of party positions and issue salience
While conventional wisdom holds that right-wing individuals tend to present more negative attitudes toward environmental protection, McCright and colleagues
(2016) find no clear relationship between political ideology and environmental attitudes in Central and Eastern Europe. The reason for this finding remains speculative. Our study expands on this phenomenon by exploring how party competition and, thereby, parties’ focus on a specific issue moderate this ideology-environment link at an individual level across 28 European countries. Using individual level-data from the European Value Study and party-level estimates from the Chapel Hill Expert Survey, our findings emphasize that respondents’ political orientation predicts their environmental attitudes more strongly when their preferred party prioritizes environmental issues. Notably, the left-right connection weakens when parties downplay environmental concerns, revealing why such issues have less impact in Central and Eastern, and Southern European political landscapes. This underscores the contextual boundaries ofNarodowe Centrum Nauki, grant no. 2020/37/B/HS6/02998
Joint Growth Trajectories of Ideal L2 Writing Self, Enjoyment, and Anxiety as Predictors of L2 Writing Achievement: Linear vs. Curvilinear Growth Curve Modeling
This study investigated the co-development of the ideal L2 writing self, writing enjoyment, and writing anxiety over time, as well as their predictive role in L2 writing achievement, using latent growth curve modeling (LGCM). A total of 145 EFL students in an IELTS writing course completed scales for these constructs across four one-month intervals. Polynomial LGCMs were applied to compare linear, piecewise, and quadratic growth models. Results revealed linear growth with increasing trends from T1 to T4 for the ideal L2 writing self and writing enjoyment, while writing anxiety followed a piecewise trajectory, with an initial decline (T1–T2) followed by stabilization (T2–T4). Significant covariances among the three constructs indicated their interconnected development over time. Initial levels of these factors were not predictive of L2 writing achievement, but their growth trajectories significantly predicted outcomes. These findings highlight the dynamic interplay of emotional and motivational factors in L2 writing development and underscore the importance of longitudinal research in capturing their evolving influence on L2 writing achievement. This work was supported by the National Science Center, Poland; project title: "Pozytywne i negatywne emocje, zaangażowanie, motywacja a poziom opanowania języka angielskiego przez uczniów polskiej szkoły średniej", number 2022/45/B/HS2/00187 (2023–2025)
"Pokój – to całkiem dobra zabawa. Może jeszcze lepsza niż wojna!". O "Bitwie o Kozi Dwór" Józefa Hena
The article attempts to interpret the novel "Bitwa o Kozi Dwór" (1955) from the perspective of space studies. Following the research of Yi-Fu Tuan and Florian Znaniecki, it analyses the experience of war playing as an important ritual for domesticating space and, at the same time, an important event in characters’ biography. Józef Hen’s novel tells the story of a group of children looking for a place to play football in pre-war Warsaw. Kozi Dwór seems to be perfect for this, but the boys from Obozowa play there most often. The two groups fight several times, but eventually join forces to form a football team and defeat boys from richer families in a match. The article proves that the ‘backyard war’ is an initiatory experience at the level of identification with a specific place, conflict resolution or interpersonal relations. Not only does Hen use a well-known theme of chil- dren’s literature, but at the same time tells an autobiographical story. The researcher posits that, as in "Nowolipie Street", the writer recalls a world that vanished during the Second World War, but does not elaborate on its end. The battle of Kozi Dwór, however, is not only a foreshadowing of the tragic fate of this generation, but also a recollection of the Arcadian landscape of childhood, when peacemaking was easier.
Korzystając z metadanych pochodzących z bazy Scopus – globalnej bibliometrycznej bazy danych publikacji i cytowań – analizujemy kariery publikacyjne 142 776 naukowców z 38 krajów OECD, którzy zaczęli publikować w 2000 r. oraz 232 843 naukowców, którzy zaczęli publikować w 2010 r. (zwanych dalej odpowiednio kohortą 2000 i kohortą 2010). Nasze badanie ogranicza się do 16 dyscyplin STEMM (nauki ścisłe, techniczne, inżynieryjne, matematyczne i medyczne) i umożliwia prześledzenie indywidualnego dorobku naukowego obu kohort naukowców do 2022 r.
NATO – between Safety and Security. NATO Summit in Washington – Findings and Concerns
Safety and security are two distinct, but related and connected issues. While often mistakenly used interchangeably, together they form an integrated safe-secur system that seeks to ensure the maximum safety/security to various entities. Safety is about establishing and maintaining resilience/capability to prevent threats/challenges of a generally unintentional nature, such as natural disasters or accidents. It constitutes a more passive dimension of safety/security, primarily concerned with non-military aspects. To some extent, safety can be likened to a more or less effective defensive shield. Security, on the other hand, is generally about actively countering threats/challenges of a deliberate nature, that is those generated or supported by humans (and in the future, perhaps by artificial intelligence). It often requires physical force or military measures (hard security) to be used in conjunction with the necessary support of soft security, including financial, legal, administrative, and other measures. This dimension of safety/security can therefore be compared to the sword. Despite the above differences, in the case of both safety and security, one can talk about the need, value and purpose of safety/security and the pursuit of interests involved. Both safety and security can be considered internally and externally (internationally), and pointing to a wide variety of related factors. However, the distinction between safety and security is not always clear-cut and different authors perceive it in different ways,1 as illustrated by Clarissa Meerts. In her opinion, safety refers to a state of being free from danger or threat, and is closely related to physical conditions, such as the absence of injury. Security, on the other hand, is more concerned with actions to prevent or respond to external threats (Meerts, 2021). Drawing from the above, certain entities, such as NATO for the purpose of this analysis, can be said to apply security to ensure maximum safety to itself and its members. This article makes the primary reference to the safe-secur (shield and sword) model as a theoretical starting point for discussing the recent NATO Summit in Washington (9-11 July, 2024) and its key outcomes. In this context, a number of research questions arise, such as: (1) To what extent are the Summit’s key outcomes actionable?; (2) Will individual NATO members have the determination, resources, and political will on the one hand, and unity and solidarity on the other to implement them?; (3) Will it be possible in the future to ensure the public support for the implementation of the agreements reached, including high financial costs, especially if the economic and social situation deteriorates or a financial crisis arises?; (4) How will this be affected, for example, by the political crisis ongoing in Germany and France at the end of 2024, the second presidency of Donald Trump starting in 2025, or the further geopolitical reorientation of the United States towards the Indo-Pacific region? These and other research questions are the starting point for the analysis in the text
Selected Polish historical museums after 1989 are a space for (re)shaping social relations. From "temple museum" to "social sculpture museum"
Wydział HistoriiPraca analizuje wyzwania współczesnych muzeów i rolę edukacji muzealnej w kształtowaniu relacji społecznych. Praca składa się z ośmiu rozdziałów, obejmujących m.in. teorię muzeum, kontekst prawny, metody badań i analizę praktyk edukacyjnych.
The dissertation analyzes the challenges contemporary museums face and the role of museum education in shaping social relations. It focuses on Polish museums after 1989, particularly their inclusive practices. The research includes a review of scholarly literature, legal documents, and museum programs, as well as field studies. The author examines how museums engage various social groups in creating the museum as a "social sculpture." The dissertation consists of eight chapters, covering museum theory, legal context, research methods, and analysis of educational practices. Crucial to its comprehensive approach are diverse sources of information, such as museum archives, scholarly literature, and legal documents. The thesis concentrates on understanding the evolution of museology and education after 1989, with particular emphasis on the role of the museum as a platform shaping social relations and promoting the participation of various social groups in cultural life
