This article covers the issues connected with the early medieval stronghold in Grzybowo, which was built in the years 919 to 923 (dendrochronological dating). Its second construction phase took place in the years 929 to 935 and another at the beginning of the next decade of the 10 th century. This complex belongs to the ‘major settlements of the early Piast state’ and has been systematically excavated since the end of the 1980s. The research conducted over the last few years (2018 to 2020), implemented within project No. UMO-2017/25/B/HS3/00016 and financed by the National Science Centre, has provided plentiful new results, but also has confirmed several older hypotheses concerning early medieval Grzybowo. Thanks to the results of this works, it was possible to demonstrate that the stronghold in the form known today (Site 1) primarily consisted of two parts, which in the 10 th century comprised one of the largest settlement complexes in the Greater Poland at that time. An important element supplementing this settlement picture is a craft settlement (Site 6), traces of which were recorded to the south and east of the stronghold. In the course of this research, both in relation to the stronghold and the craft settlement, further excavations and non-invasive research methods were implemented, including ALS LiDAR (Airborne Laser Scanning and Light Detection and Ranging), Aerial Archaeology, magnetic prospection, GPR (Ground- Penetrating Radar), ERS (Electrical Resistivity Survey) and ERT (Electrical Resistivity Tomog- raphy). When necessary and possible, the results of these analyses were verified through excavation. As a result of this combined research, the stronghold complex in Grzybowo is becoming a better understood archaeological site.354369Treasures of Time: Research of the Faculty of Archaeology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna

The European Union a community of values. A look from the perspective of the language of protest and new means of expression in Poland

    Get PDF
Taka forma wolności prowadzi do wulgaryzacji życia publicznego. The article refers in its analysis to the perception of the values of the European Union from the human perspective as the highest good in the context of media changes and women’s protests in Poland at the end of 2020 and social activity demonstrating Poles’ attachment to the EU. At the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century, the important values emphasized in the public space are: the good of individuals, freedom of expression, political, social and economic equality concerning everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, political sympathies. They are the basis for the functioning of the human community in this EU. New media, including extremely important social media, have become a space to defend these values. The aim of this article is a practical analysis of the intersection of values with a traditional humanistic meaning, such as the culture of speech and public debate, with the struggle for the freedom to express one’s views and defend values using new media. Contrary to appearances, it is not contradictory. The language of protest of the young generation is not correct, it reaches to profanity, because very often it is not only a generational change, but a response to the language of politics and politicians. The field for analysis is the political and ideological dispute sparked on the Polish political scene. Analysis based on political science research and media science was based on researching the sources of both scientific literatures, the Internet and social media. The case studies are related to the women’s protest in Poland and other protests against government policy. Due to the nature of social media, there is no censorship, no control of forms of expression and content. It is a practical realization of the freedom and the right to express one’s views and protest. This form of freedom leads to a vulgarization of public life. Often, vulgarity, verbal, gestures, symbols and their use have their source in the observation of political life. According to the authors, this form of expressing thoughts, including the one serving to defend basic social values, requires redefining and understanding cultural contexts

Belarus and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Practice and Reality

    No full text
The article’s aim is to present the approaches of the authorities of the Republic of Belarus toward the COVID-19 pandemic. The main research hypothesis is that Belarus decided to consciously ignore the emerging epidemiological threat from the beginning of the pandemic by adopting a strategy of appeasing the society and downplaying the global danger. Based on the data analysis, it has been proved that most Belarusians during the COVID-19 pandemic completely lost their trust in the state and its authorities, which in their opinion turned out to be unable to protect their citizens against the negative (health, economic) effects of the pandemic

Gender relations and female agency in Claire Keegan’s "Antarctica"

    Get PDF
Claire Keegan is one of the most prominent voices within the contemporary Irish short story panorama. Internationally acclaimed, her prose has been praised for its frank and bitter portrayal of a rural world, whose outdated values, no matter how anchored in the past they might be, still prevail in a modern milieu. Keegan’s unsympathetic views on society, mainly on the Catholic Church and the family, are the main targets of her harsh criticism. Issues like gender and sexuality, two social constructs with which to validate an uneven distribution of power, constitute the pillars of most of her plots. Bearing these aspects in mind, my proposal focuses on the analysis of Keegan’s first collection of short stories, Antarctica (1999), in light of gender relations and female agency, in an attempt to find patterns of – often thwarted – female emancipation in the context of the rapid changes of a society that is still adjusting to a globalised world. This article will also engage in the discussion of her second collection, Walk the Blue Fields (2007), and her long short story Foster (2010).The research carried out for the writing of this article has been financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitivity, research project FFI2017-84619-P AEI/FEDER, UE

Strength and weakness of the Old English adjective

    Get PDF
As regards Old English, the inflectional strength and weakness are characterised by a kind of inconsistency. In the case of Old English adjectives these two inflectional properties appear to be different from those associated with nouns and verbs. In the case of the latter the two properties seem to be lexically determined while in the case of adjectives they appear to be determined by syntactic conditions. The traditional accounts of the Old English grammar attribute two paradigms to one adjectival lexical item. The analysis presented in this article postulates that one can actually speak about one adjectival inflection and what is traditionally presented as strong and weak adjectival inflections is actually the result of two different syntactic derivations

Ælfric’s expressions for shame and guilt: A study in intra-writer conceptual variation

    Get PDF
This research focuses on the analysis of onomasiological variation in Old English texts written by Ælfric; more specifically, I am interested in the study of the different motifs that shape the linguistic expressions of shame and guilt used by this Anglo-Saxon monk across different textual genres. Through the fine-grained analysis of the whole set of shame and guilt expressions recorded in the entire corpus of Ælfrician texts, a network of literal and figurative conceptualizations for each emotion is proposed here. Based on this network, I have reconstructed and analysed patterns of conceptual variation in Ælfric’s English in order to show the existing tension between literal, metonymic and metaphoric expressions for these two emotions. As shall be seen here, the introduction in Anglo-Saxon England of Augustinian psychology by Ælfric and other highly educated authors favoured (i) the progressive neglect of the Germanic concept of shame and guilt as instruments of social control, (ii) the dissemination of new shame-related values, and (iii) the growing use of a new set of embodied conceptualizations for the two emotions under scrutiny here, most of which have become common figurative expressions of shame and guilt in later varieties of English. The new expressions (e.g., SHAME IS SOMETHING COVERING A PERSON, GUILT IS A BURDEN) illustrate the shift towards a progressive embodiment of the new emotional standards brought by Christianization. According to these standards, rather than an external judgment or reproach, shame and guilt involve a negative evaluation of oneself. The present study has been supported by the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha (SBPLY/17/180501/000267)

Synthesis and physicochemical studies of novel resorc[4]arene derivatives with diverse molecular architecture, conformational equilibria and chirality

    Get PDF
Wyznaczono strukturę krystaliczną jednej z pochodnych, diastereoselektywność reakcji cykloaddycji w zależności od zastosowanej pochodnej rezorc[4]arenu, używanej do generowania o-chinometinowego produktu pośredniego. Wykazano, że w przypadku pochodnych kumaryny, selektywnie tworzą się cyklochiralne konformery koronowe typu „in” lub „out”.Resorc[4]arenes, despite many years since their discovery, are still important elements of supramolecular chemistry, on the basis of which new supramolecules can be designed, including chiral ones. This work focuses on studies of the synthesis and physicochemical properties of new resorc[4]arene derivatives. For this purpose, thermally generated o-quinomethine derivatives of resorc[4]arene and their reactions with selected dienophiles (Diels-Alder reaction) and CH-acids (Michael reaction) were used, yielding new derivatives with enlarged cavity, diverse conformational structure and chirality, and interesting spectroscopic properties. Examples of cycloaddition reactions involving the o-quinomethine derivative of resorc[4]arene are unit examples, so it seemed appropriate to study this reaction on a wider group of compounds. The conditions of synthesis and the yield of cycloaddition reactions involving them are described. The crystal structure of one of the derivatives, the diastereoselectivity of the cycloaddition reaction depending on the resorc[4]arene derivative used to generate the o-quinomethine intermediate, has been determined. In spite of the dipolarophilic nature of CH-acids such as substituted coumarins and enaminones, their reactions with o-quinomethine resorc[4]arene derivatives occur through the interaction of an electrophilic agent, i.e., the carbon atom of the methine group of the o-quinomethine resorc[4]arene derivative with the electron-enriched C3 carbon atom of the coumarin derivative or the C2 carbon atom of the enaminone. The coumarin derivatives are shown to selectively form cyclochiral "in" or "out" corona conformers
