Research investigating the relationship between firm performance and gender diversity has so far reported conflicting evidence: Some studies find firm performance to benefit from gender diversity, others find negative results or no effect at all. Taking this inconclusive evidence as a sign for moderators influencing the effect of gender diversity on firm performance, we investigate the moderating influence of institutions on this relationship. Using data on 7,661 firms in 71 countries, we employ a multilevel linear regression with fixed effects to examine the moderating effect of formal as well as informal institutional characteristics. We find that institutions indeed moderate the relationship between gender diversity and firm performance. In particular, informal institutions seem to moderate the effect of diversity on market valuation (Tobin’s Q), while formal institutions moderate the effect of gender diversity on firm financial performance (ROA). These results have important theoretical implications for the academic debate on gender diversity and firm performance as well as practical implications for both businesses and lawmakers.
Net Present Value with Zero and Negative Interest Rates
Even with zero and negative interest rates, the net present value can be easily calculated, at least over finite periods of time, and used for investment decisions by companies. Economically, it is relevant why there are interest rates of and below zero at all and whether higher consumption would then not be better than resource-consuming investments
Increase in Income through Studies as an Important Measure
The academic quality of university teaching is difficult to measure. In comparison, it is easy to determine the later income growth through studying. This is important for both private and state allocation decisions, for example whether someone should study for financial reasons, what and where, while given state funds for study places can be used efficiently and additional funds justified if they bring more than they cost
Drawing Lots Instead of Losing Votes Below Electoral Thresholds and With Fractions of Seats
Percentage hurdles are intended to prevent fragmentation in parliaments and only allow parties of the minimum size of parliamentary groups into parliament. So far, the votes for parties below the hurdle are not taken into account. This inequality of votes and discrimination against small parties could be avoided by drawing lots from the smaller parties below the threshold such that one receives the mandates for the votes of all these small parties. Alternatively, each smaller party could move into parliament with the minimum size of a parliamentary group with a probability that is proportional to its share of the vote, or the voluntary formation of lottery groups could be allowed. Finally, drawing lots can also be used as an alternative to the current electoral procedures, in order to allocate fractions of mandates or to replace a runoff for a position
DOG1 controls dormancy independently of ABA core signaling kinases regulation by preventing AFP dephosphorylation through AHG1
Seed dormancy determines germination timing, influencing seed plant adaptation and overall fitness. DELAY OF GERMINATION 1 (DOG1) is a conserved central regulator of dormancy cooperating with the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) through negative regulation of ABA HYPERSENSITIVE GERMINATION (AHG) 1 and AHG3 phosphatases. The current molecular mechanism of DOG1 signaling proposes it regulates the activation of central ABA-related SnRK2 kinases. Here, we unveil DOG1's functional autonomy from the regulation of ABA core signaling components and unravel its pivotal control over the activation of ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE FIVE BINDING PROTEINs (AFPs). Our data revealed a molecular relay in which AFPs' genuine activation by AHG1 is contained by DOG1 to prevent the breakdown of maturation-imposed ABA responses independently of ABA-related kinase activation status. This work offers a molecular understanding of how plants fine-tune germination timing, while preserving seed responsiveness to adverse environmental cues, and thus represents a milestone in the realm of conservation and breeding programs
Utilizing a tablet-based artificial intelligence system to assess movement disorders in a prospective study
Spiral drawings on paper are used as routine measures in hospitals to assess Parkinson’s Disease motor deficiencies. In the age of emerging mobile health tools and Artificial Intelligence a comprehensive digital setup enables granular biomarker analyses and improved differential diagnoses in movement disorders. This study aims to evaluate on discriminatory features among Parkison’s Disease patients, healthy subjects and diverse movement disorders. Overall, 24 Parkinson’s Disease patients, 27 healthy controls and 26 patients with similar differential diagnoses were assessed with a novel tablet-based system. It utilizes an integrative assessment by combining a structured symptoms questionnaire—the Parkinson’s Disease Non-Motor Scale—and 2-handed spiral drawing captured on a tablet device. Three different classification tasks were evaluated: Parkinson’s Disease patients versus healthy control group (Task 1), all Movement disorders versus healthy control group (Task 2) and Parkinson’s Disease patients versus diverse other movement disorder patients (Task 3). To systematically study feature importances of digital biomarkers a Machine Learning classifier is cross-validated and interpreted with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values. The number of non-motor symptoms differed significantly for Tasks 1 and 2 but not for Task 3. The proposed drawing features partially differed significantly for all three tasks. The diagnostic accuracy was on average 94.0% in Task 1, 89.4% in Task 2, and 72% in Task 3. While the accuracy in Task 3 only using the symptom questionnaire was close to the baseline, it greatly improved when including the tablet-based features from 60 to 72%. The accuracies for all three tasks were significantly improved by integrating the two modalities. These results show that tablet-based drawing features can not only be captured by consumer grade devices, but also capture specific features to Parkinson’s Disease that significantly improve the diagnostic accuracy compared to the symptom questionnaire. Therefore, the proposed system provides an objective type of disease characterization of movement disorders, which could be utilized for home-based assessments as well

Homogeneous Ricci flows and the Dynamical Alekseevskii Conjecture
verbessern, was wiederum unser Verständnis des allgemeinen Falls erweitern könnte.
This dissertation deals with the Ricci flow equation in Riemannian geometry. The main goal
is to deepen our understanding of the long-time behavior of Ricci flow solutions with
homogeneous initial metrics. Specifically, it addresses the Dynamical Alekseevskii
Conjecture, which states that the universal covering of an immortal homogeneous Ricci flow
solution is contractible. First, we establish a general structural result for the isometry group
of a homogeneous manifold admitting an immortal Ricci flow solution, namely that it does
not contain a simple normal compact subgroup. We then show that the conjecture holds for
two special sets of homogeneous initial metrics: the awesome metrics and the awesome
polar metrics. Testing the conjecture in these cases is of interest because they include
metrics with negative Ricci curvature and therefore require more involved arguments to
improve the initial curvature estimates, which in turn could expand our understanding of the
general case. In the case of awesome metrics, the obtained geometric estimates lead to a
more accurate description of the asymptotic geometries of the solutions, both in the
immortal and non-immortal cases
