Mathematik lernen mit Augmented Reality:Beiträge aus Forschung und Praxis

    No full text

Nonrigid motion is a fundamental yet understudied aspect of vision. Unlike rigid objects, fluids, fire, smoke, clouds, fabrics, and flocks deform and exchange parts over time, violating many assumptions of classic motion-perception models. For this dissertation, a stimulus was developed that isolates one cue that is reliable for nonrigid motion, the movement of a motion pattern. Using this tool, three studies examined perception, mechanism, and oculomotor interaction, and investigated distinctions from self-motion, biological, and rigid motion. Results indicate that nonrigid motion perception relies on moving motion patterns as the dominant cue, the underlying mechanism is based on the curl of the optic flow, and the distinct neuronal pathway of nonrigid motion perception excludes many brain areas involved in motion processing, gaze control, and visual stability

On the historicity of the Assyrian royal family in Classical and Byzantine historiography

This note examines the membership and configuration Assyrian royal family according to Classical tradition, contrasting it with that of later Byzantine historiography. It is demonstrated that there are more and clearer resonances with historical reality than has previously been thought. Most notably, the king "Thouras" noted by loannes Malalas can be neatly identified with Pulu (i.e. Tukulti-apil-Esarra IV* of Assyria). This suggests that the spurious Membronios/Semeronios of Babylon was a genuine Syriac source upon which Malalas drew. On the strength of these findings, traditions about the Assyrian royal family in Classical historiography must be re-investigated in detail, to establish better their inspiration and respective veracity

Promoting Argumentative Writing in Adolescent EFL Students: A Randomized Controlled Intervention Study on the Effects of Formative Feedback

    No full text

RalGAP complexes control secretion and primary cilia in pancreatic disease

κB-Ras/RalGAP complexes limit the activity of Ral GTPases, which function in EGFR/Ras signaling. RalGAP expression is down-regulated in pancreatic cancer; however, the role of RalGAP and Ral GTPases in tumor development in vivo remained unclear. Here, we show that pancreatic RalGAPβ deficiency alone is sufficient to induce inflammation and neoplasia in vivo. We identify that this phenotype is triggered by disturbance of the secretory pathway and polarized exocytosis in acinar cells, demonstrating that RalGAP complexes uphold spatial control of Ral activity. We furthermore show that RALGAPβ deficiency results in defective primary cilium assembly, a process required for efficient acinar regeneration upon inflammation. Only primary cilium formation depends on κB-Ras proteins, suggesting that κB-Ras proteins are not essential for all RalGAP complex-controlled processes. In combination with an oncogenic KRASG12D mutation, RalGAPβ deficiency leads to a dramatic shortening of tumor latency and median survival. Our results highlight an important role of RalGAP/Ral signaling in upholding acinar cell identity and preventing pancreatic cancer development

Regulations on Sex Toy Industry in Europe

    No full text
The European sex toy market is witnessing a strategic sales growth. The lockdown to contain the Corona Pandemic situation is boosting the market scenario. Countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain are key growing countries driving the demand for sex toys in Europe. Against this background, this article explores the sex toy industry in Europe and the few laws that govern it. It discusses that a lack of regulation of these products has allowed manufacturers to exploit the inexpensive but highly toxic materials used in the making of sex toys to the detriment of consumers, and the implications inclined towards improving the protection of consumers in Europe

The wrong horse was bet on: the effects of argument structure versus argument adjacency on the processing of idiomatic sentences

Introduction: Psycholinguistic research remains puzzled about the circumstances under which syntactically transformed idioms keep their figurative meaning. There is an abundance of linguistic and psycholinguistic studies that have examined which factors may determine why some idioms are more syntactically fixed than others, including transparency, compositionality, and syntactic frozenness; however, they have returned inconclusive, sometimes even conflicting, results. This is the first study to examine argument structure (i.e., the number of arguments a verb takes) and argument adjacency (i.e., the position of the critical arguments relative to the verb) and their effects on the processing of idiomatic and literal sentences in German. Our results suggest that neither the traditional models of idiom processing (according to which idioms are stored as fixed entries) nor more recent hybrid theories (which concede some compositional handling in addition to a fixed entry) adequately account for the effects of argument structure or argument adjacency. Therefore, this study challenges existing models of idiom processing. Methods: In two sentence-completion experiments, participants listened to idiomatic and literal sentences in both active and passive voice without the sentence-final verb. They indicated which of three visually-presented verbs best completed the sentence. We manipulated the factor argument structure within experiments and argument adjacency across experiments. In Experiment 1, passivized three-argument sentences had the critical argument adjacent to the verb while two-argument sentences had the critical argument non-adjacent to the verb, and vice versa in Experiment 2. Results: In both experiments, voice interacted with argument structure. Active sentences—both literal and idiomatic—showed equivalent processing of two- and three-argument sentences. However, passive sentences returned contrasting effects. In Experiment 1, three-argument sentences were processed faster than two-argument sentences and vice versa in Experiment 2. This pattern corresponds to faster processing when critical arguments are adjacent than non-adjacent. Discussion: The results point to the dominant role of argument adjacency over the number of arguments in the processing of syntactically transformed sentences. Regarding idiom processing, we conclude that the adjacency of the verb to its critical arguments determines whether passivized idioms keep their figurative meaning and present the implications of this finding for relevant models of idiom processing

What Is the Survivorship of Megaprosthetic Reconstruction Following the Resection of Renal Cell Carcinoma Long Bone Metastases and What Are the Potential Risk Factors for a Prosthetic Complication?

    No full text
Background: Long bone metastases are common in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). One potential surgical treatment option is resection and megaprosthetic reconstruction. However, implant complications and survival are poorly understood. This study analyzes patient and implant survival as well as associated risk factors. Methods: This is a retrospective study from a single academic center, analyzing 86 patients that underwent resection and megaprosthetic reconstruction performed between 1993 and 2017. The most common location of megaprosthetic reconstruction was the proximal femur (PFR) in 38% (33 of 86) of patients. We calculated overall patient survival and associated risk factors using the Kaplan–Meier method and implant survivorship using a competing risk analysis. Results: A total of 73% (63/86) of patients died of their disease after a median of 19 (IQR 9–37) months following surgery, and a median of 71 (IQR 31–132) months after the initial diagnosis of RCC. The overall survival probability was 29% (95% CI 18–40%) five years after surgery. The five-year risk of revision surgery (within a competing risk framework) was 18% (95% CI 11–28). A total of 8% (7 of 86) of patients underwent an exchange of the implant itself. Patients with total bone replacements had a higher revision risk (SHR 19.46 (95% CI 6.9–54.9), p < 0.01). Furthermore, the revision risk was higher with increasing reconstruction length per mm (SHR 1.01 (95% CI 1.01–1.02), p = 0.03) and prolonged surgical time per minute (SHR: 1.01 (95% CI 1.0–1.02), p < 0.01). Local postoperative radiation treatment (RTX) was associated with an increased risk for revisions (SHR 2.59 (95% CI 0.96–6.95), p = 0.06). Conclusions: Modular megaprostheses demonstrated a fairly low risk of implant revision although postoperative radiation therapy and total bone replacements are associated with an increased risk
