Behavioural evidence for colour vision determined by conditioning in the purple mud crab Scylla tranquebarica
Crabs and shrimps (order Decapoda) use colours in various tasks such as foraging and mate choice. Colour vision requires at least two types of photoreceptors with different spectral sensitivities. Previous physiological studies revealed that most crabs including Scylla mud crabs have a single visual receptor system, i.e. they are colour blind. We determined colour vision by means of a behavioural experiment on hatchery-produced and wild-captured purple mud crab Scylla tranquebarica in a roofed hatchery. Adult crabs (8-10 cm carapace width) were subjected to classical conditioning to associate a food reward with a blue or a green stimulus placed among seven shades of grey. The hatchery-produced crabs learnt this task after 14 days of reward training, and thereafter distinguished blue in 27 non-reward trials, and green in 39 non-reward trials. The wild-captured crabs did so after 25 days of reward training, and distinguished green in 49 non-reward trials. These results indicated colour vision in S. tranquebarica. However, the crabs were unable to distinguish blue or green in dim light of 4.4 cd/m2 (which is slightly brighter than full moon light). The high colour vision threshold was attributed to the small optic parameters of the apposition compound eyes of S. tranquebarica
Impeding the outbreaks of transboundary aquatic animal diseases in Southeast Asian aquaculture: The aquatic emergency preparedness and response system guidelines
As aquaculture in Southeast Asia rapidly grows, it is being confronted with incidences of aquatic animal diseases threatening its sustainability. In early 2013, the SEAFDEC Member Countries raised concerns regarding the outbreaks of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), one of the causative agents of early mortality syndrome (EMS), that affected the shrimp industry of the region, specifically in Viet Nam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines that led to low production and significant economic losses. In addressing such concerns, the SEAFDEC Council of Directors during its Meeting in 2014, suggested that health management, particularly the control and prevention of transboundary aquatic animal diseases, should be included in the future programs of the Aquaculture Department (AQD) of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC). The pressing situation on AHPND in cultured shrimp in the region prompted SEAFDEC/AQD to seek financial support to fund a consultative meeting that would assess the occurrence of EMS/AHPND and other emerging diseases in farmed shrimps in the ASEAN Member States (AMSs). In response, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) of the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) collaborated with SEAFDEC/AQD and agreed to co-host the said consultative meeting, while the Government of Japan committed to fund the meeting through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). Thus, the Regional Technical Consultation (RTC) on EMS/AHPND and Other Transboundary Diseases for Improved Aquatic Animal Health in Southeast Asia was organized on 22-24 February 2016 in Makati City, Philippines. While assessing the status of EMS/AHPND and other emerging diseases in farmed shrimps, the RTC identified the gaps and priority areas for R&D and potential collaboration, and formulated the regional policy recommendations that centered on emergency preparedness and response systems (EPRS) through early warning, detection and response, for effective management of aquatic animal disease outbreaks in the region. The recommended EPRS comprises contingency planning arrangements that minimize the impacts of serious aquatic animal disease outbreaks through containment, i.e. prevention of further spread or eradication of the diseases whether at regional, national, or farm levels. Thus, establishing a harmonized aquatic EPRS among the AMSs was recognized as a top priority warranting a solid platform for effective and expeditious decision-making with clearly defined responsibilities and authority

Stock enhancement of abalone, Haliotis asinina, in multi-use buffer zone of Sagay Marine Reserve in the Philippines
Donkey's ear abalone (Haliotis asinina) is a gourmet seafood export of the Philippines but its wild stock is at risk due to high fishing pressure. This paper aims to show evidences that abalone seeds produced in hatcheries can be used to rehabilitate its fisheries in multi-use buffer zones of marine reserves. This study released hatchery-reared abalone juveniles in a community-based resource enhancement site located in multi-use reef surrounding Molocaboc. This island is populated by fisherfolks who participated in protecting the 4000 m2 coralline release site. Molocaboc Reef comprise the buffer zone of Sagay Marine Reserve in Negros Occidental province in central Philippines. Data obtained during monthly monitoring of the release site from 2011 to 2016 showed that hatchery-reared abalone established together with its wild counterparts. Baseline wild abalone catch per unit effort (CPUE = 3 divers 1 h fishing) is 0.005/100 m2 in 2011. Mean monthly CPUE after release increased to 53 hatchery-reared and wild individuals combined. The mean shell length, body weight and body mass index of the hatchery-reared individuals (6.4 cm, 70.9 g, 10.5 g/cm) is not significantly different from those of the recovered wild stocks (6.9 cm, 85.0 g, 12.0 g/cm). The stocks recovered in the midst of undisrupted fishing activities in areas immediately outside and beyond the release site. Thus, mass production of seeds of overfished species is advised to repopulate degraded fisheries, improve catch of fisherfolks living within buffer areas of marine reserves and contribute to production and trade of high-value species
Biology and hatchery rearing of the silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus
Known for its tasty flesh, silver therapon, locally known as ayungin, has been regarded to be one of the most valuable edible native freshwater species in the Philippines. Demands for this fish species remain high which caused the wild stock supply to decline. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, catch for this fish has deteriorated from 4,765 metric tons in 2002 to only 1,408 metric tons in 2018.
Due to this growing concern, a hatchery technique was devised by an AQD scientist to aid the deteriorating population of the species in the Philippine waters. This protocol, just like other technologies developed by SEAFDEC/AQD, will be for free and open to fish farmers interested to venture into ayungin culture. This new system of growing ayungin larvae in captivity was granted a patent by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) in 2019, published in Volume 22, Number 124 of the office’s official gazette.
This manual contains the patented technique which will provide current knowledge on the biology, breeding, and seed production of ayungin. It aims to serve as a useful reference for students, aquaculturists, researchers, government fishery agency personnel who are interested in the breeding and culture of the native fish species.
Refinements on the technology for seed production and rearing of this specific species are still being continued. SEAFDEC/AQD is aiming to conduct more research in the development of nursery and grow-out technology. The Department is also gearing towards developing techniques for bigger culture systems which will be fit for commercial production. This is to help stakeholders and the industry boosts the economy through the production of this endemic species
Value chain analysis of the horse mussel Modiolus metcalfei (Hanley, 1843) fishery in Iloilo, Philippines
The exploitation of horse mussels Modiolus metcalfei (Hanley, 1843) in Dumangas, Iloilo has been going on for decades, yet effective fisheries management remains hindered by the poor understanding of the fishery. A value chain analysis was conducted to provide a better understanding of the horse mussel fishery in the area and identify upgrading strategies. Mapping of the value chain used data gathered through fisherfolk interviews, key informant interviews, and field observations. The collectors, processors, retailers, and ambulant vendors are the key players in the fishery. It is a sphere of both men and women who create value additions along the chain. While both men and women may engage in marketing, the majority of men are involved in the collection while women do the processing. The collector-cum-ambulant vendor benefits the most with a monthly income of PHP10,892.78 (USD217.86) with value addition of PHP8.30 kg-1 (USD0.17), followed by the collector with a monthly income of PHP9,597.46 (USD191.95) with a value addition of PHP4.00 kg-1 (USD0.08) and retailer with a monthly income of PHP5,000.00 (USD100.00) with value addition of PHP4.55 kg-1 (USD0.09). The actor who benefits the least in this value chain is the processor with a monthly income of PHP4,185.10 (USD83.70) with value addition of PHP2.30 kg-1 (USD0.05). Upgrading strategies at every node of the value chain along with its enabling strategies were proposed to improve the income of key actors and maximise the economic benefits from the horse mussel fishery
Poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and infection reduction in farmed aquatic animals
There is a continuous effort in finding effective and sustainable strategies to control diseases in farmed animals, and in recent years, the application of the bacterial storage compound poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) was identified as a new disease control agent for aquaculture. The idea of using PHB as a biocontrol agent was conceived based on the knowledge that this biopolymer can be degraded into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and SCFAs are known compounds with antimicrobial properties. At the beginning of this chapter, an overview about the PHB granule, its detection, quantification, production, and recovery in microorganisms is presented. The main topic focuses on the application and beneficial effects of PHB in farmed aquatic animals. The mechanisms by which PHB provides beneficial effects to the host are discussed

When searching for information in response to a query, their own library’s online public access catalog (OPAC) and databases remain the most preferred resource for most aquatic science librarians. This preference does not vary regardless of age, gender, educational degree, position or designation, country classification, or type of library. While the Internet acts as a supplement to the library collection, whenever the requested information is not available at the library, librarians prefer Googling instead of looking at other sources. Other than aquatic science-specific open access repositories and databases, some of the librarians have identified Google Scholar, DOAJ, ResearchGate, and Academia, among many others as valuable resources that help them fulfill their clientele’s query
