    Ang polyeto na ito ay inihanda at isinulat ng GlobalSeaweedSTAR Philippine Team sa payak na lengwahe matapos ang apat na taong pananaliksik sa industriya ng pag-aalaga ng mga halamang-dagat sa Pilipinas. Nais nito na maipaunawa sa iba’t ibang mga stakeholder ng industriyang panghalamang-dagat (seaweed industry) ang mga bagay na may kinalaman sa pag-aalaga ng mga halamang-dagat mula sa punto de vista ng 'bio-eco-physiology' at akwakultura, hanggang sa pag aanalisa ng ‘social network’ na sumasaklaw din sa risgo at mga peligro at mga stratehiya sa pangagasiwa nito. Bukod dito, nirerekomenda sa pamamagitan ng polyetong ito ang pagsasagawa ng mga mambabatas ng mga patakaran na may kinalaman sa pagsakatuparan ng mga pang bayo-sekyuridad na alituntunin upang maiwasan o mabawasan ang pagkakaroon ng mga sakit sa mga halamang-dagat, sa pagbawas ng mga hamon o risgo sa produksyon, antas ng pagbebenta, at pagproseso sa pag-iisip ng mga stratehiya sa pangangasiwa sa risgo at peligro. Ang mga patakaran na ito na base sa siyensiya ay magdudulot ng mas matatag, mapapanatiling maganda ang kapaligiran at mas likas-kayang akwakultura ng halamang-dagat sa Pilipinas.Filipin

    Improved survival and growth of silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus early juveniles through co‐feeding with Artemia and commercial feeds

    This study examined the effects of co-feeding Artemia and commercial feeds on survival, growth and fatty acid composition of silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus early juveniles. Triplicate groups of 36 days post hatch (DPH) early juveniles (17.09 ± 1.69 mm; 0.07 ± 0.02 g) were stocked in nine glass aquaria at 25 individuals per aquarium and reared for 60 days on three feeding regimes: (A) Artemia + powdered commercial tilapia feed (35% crude protein (CP)); (B) Artemia + powdered commercial prawn feed (38% CP); and (C) Artemia nauplii only as the control group. Early juveniles co-fed Artemia and commercial feeds had significantly higher survival (97%) than those fed Artemia alone (86%). Except for the condition factors that were similar to the control group, higher mean total length (30.2 ± 1.3 mm and 27.6 ± 1.2 mm), body weight (401 ± 64 mg and 339 ± 46 mg), length- (SGRL; 0.95 ± 0.07%/day and 0.80 ± 0.07%/day) and weight-specific growth rates (SGRW; 2.85 ± 0.27%/day and 2.58 ± 0.22%/day) were also observed in the co-feeding groups, independent of protein, fat and other nutrient levels in commercial feeds. Higher levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids were reflected in early juveniles co-fed Artemia and commercial feeds than those fed exclusively on Artemia contributing, in part, to the higher growth and survival observed in the co-feeding groups. Together, these results suggest that co-feeding strategy showed best results in terms of growth and survival, and that commercial feed with 35% protein and 6% crude fat levels may be beneficial in supplementing live feed with essential nutrients to optimize production of silver therapon fry during nursery culture.This study was funded by the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department (Nr-01-F2013B) and the Natural Sciences Research Institute of the University of the Philippines (Diliman) (BIO-16-1-07)

    Effect of a non-native freshwater goby invasion on spawning habitat use of two native freshwater gobies

    We tracked the spawning habitat use of two native stream gobies (Rhinogobius fluviatilis and Rhinogobius nagoyae) before and during the invasion of a non-native goby (Rhinogobius sp. OR) and after its disappearance in the Tani River, Japan. Throughout the three phases, the majority of the two native gobies showed high preference and use for the habitat with medium-fast current velocity and coarse substrates as spawning sites. When the non-native Rhinogobius sp. OR invaded, the majority of them also preferred and used the same habitat as spawning sites, and the spawning habitat use of the three Rhinogobius species substantially overlapped. These results suggest that the invasion by the non-native goby did not significantly change the spawning habitat use of the two native gobies. However, the similar habitat requirement among the three Rhinogobius species may cause competition for the spawning habitat when the availability of their favorite habitat is greatly restricted. The non-native Rhinogobius sp. OR could utilize the spawning space on the undersurface of nest stones more efficiently than the two native gobies. Therefore, in the non-native Rhinogobius sp. OR, the size of nest stones is unlikely to be a limiting factor for reproductive success. Such ecological characteristics on nest stone use may enable Rhinogobius sp. OR to easily acquire nest stones with less competition in the spawning habitat where they coexist, which have also helped Rhinogobius sp.     On the relationship between aquaculture and food security: Why does aquaculture contribute more in some developing countries than it does in others?

    As much as 78% of fish production is subject to international trade competition. While this may be positive for economic growth, it may be at odds with achieving food security. The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship between aquaculture and food security, focussing on trade and markets in some developing countries that account for more than 90% of aquaculture output. The international trade in fish products largely involves the movement of high value species from developing to developed countries and the opposite in reverse, which can contribute to food security. Countries where food security is not improving tend to rely on small-scale aquaculture production of species that are not desired in the main markets, themselves relying on imported fish to meet domestic demand. This suggests that an aquacultural revolution in these countries may contribute to food security, as well as economic growth.This paper has received funding from the EU 7th Framework Programme Project under grant agreement number 289760

    Enriched Ulva pertusa as partial replacement of the combined fish and soybean meals in juvenile abalone Haliotis asinina (Linnaeus) diet

    The potential of enriched Ulva pertusa meal as feed ingredient in abalone juveniles, Haliotis asinina was evaluated. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated which contain 27% protein and 5% lipid. Enriched U. pertusa meal replaced 0% (control), 10%, 20%, and 30% of protein from fish and soybean meals in the formulated diets. Thirty randomly selected abalone juveniles with average weight and shell length of 0.45 g ± 0.01 and 12.71 mm ± 0.01, respectively, were placed in each of the twelve 60-L oval fiberglass tanks equipped with a flow-through seawater system. Abalone were given diets at 3–5% body weight daily for 120 days in three replicate samples. Results showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) in percent weight gain, shell length, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, and protein efficiency ratio even up to 30% replacement level. Apparent dry matter digestibility of U. pertusa meal in abalone diet was 92%. Crude protein content of the abalone fed diets 1 (10% enriched U. pertusa meal) and 3 (30% enriched U. pertusa meal) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those fed on basal diet.     First histopathological description of parasites and shell conditions of the donkey's ear abalone Haliotis asinina (Linnaeus, 1758) cultured in marine cages and land-based tanks in the Philippines

    This study is the first attempt to assess parasitic infestations in grow-out cage culture and land-based grow-out tanks of the donkey's ear abalone Haliotis asinina in the Philippines. This histopathological study of the parasites was conducted from 2010 to 2013. Using 30 samples of abalones collected monthly from two sites, samples were measured and fixed in 10% formaldehyde in seawater, and routine histological techniques were used to identify the parasites. Water temperatures of the grow-out floating sea cages and the abalone hatchery facilities whose abalones were collected measured 27.5°C–32.5°C and 26°C–29°C, respectively; salinity in the area of the sea cages was 32–34 ppt, whereas salinity of the abalone hatchery was 32–35 ppt. Examination of the shell from cage-cultured abalones revealed the presence of burrowing polychaetes belonging to the families Serpulidae (prevalence, 32.5%) and Dorvilleidae (prevalence, 30%); on the other hand, only Dorvilleidae (prevalence of 28.5%) was detected in abalones from the hatchery. Histological examination revealed the presence of unknown ciliates (prevalence, 37.5%), Nematopsis sp. (prevalence, 17%), and metacestode Tylocephalum sp. (prevalence, 8.5%) from the grow-out cage-cultured abalones, whereas unidentified ciliates (prevalence, 32.5%) and Nematopsis sp. (prevalence, 10.5%) were detected from hatchery stock. The data collected showed that there was low-intensity infection and prevalence of parasites in abalones from grow-out cages and hatchery.     Lipids and fatty acid composition in the crustacean model organism Artemia sp. as influenced by poly‐β‐hydroxybutyrate (PHB) supplementation

    The effects of dietary poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) on the lipid and fatty acids (FA) in crustaceans were investigated using Artemia as model species. Supplying PHB either in crystalline or amorphous form significantly increased the whole-body lipid contents of starved Artemia. Co-supplying dietary PHB with bacterial PHB degrader Comamonas testosteroni at 106 cells ml−1 for 24 hr also significantly increased this parameter. These findings have important implications on the lipid-saving effects of PHB in crustacean tissues. Dietary PHB, however, did not contribute to the increase in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) of the naturally DHA-deprived Artemia. Alternative strategy of co-supplying dietary PHB with highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-rich emulsion for 24 hr effectively improved the nutritional contents of Artemia and at the same time assured efficient delivery of PHB to the larval predator. According to a 13C stable isotope tracer study, the significantly higher δ13C levels measured in Artemia 2 hr postfeeding with 13C-labelled R. eutropha DSM545 indicate that PHB offered in natural matrix is rapidly assimilated. Overall, this study demonstrated the lipid-saving effects of PHB in Artemia. PHB assimilation following gastrointestinal degradation could attribute to its reported beneficial effects in various aquatic farmed species
