    THE EVOLVING ROLE OF UTILITY-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE IN SOUTH CAROLINA

    Decarbonization of the electric power sector in South Carolina will change the composition of generation and energy storage resources, how the system is operated, and how adequate levels of reliability are maintained by transmission system operators in the state. In an effort to reduce statewide carbon dioxide emissions, legacy coal-fired thermal generation plants will be retired and replaced with new lower emitting resources, renewable energy generation resources and energy storage resources comprised primarily of batteries and pumped storage hydropower. The three major electric utilities that own and operate utility-scale generation resources in the state, Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, and Santee Cooper, have all filed Integrated Resource Plans outlining pathways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while concurrently generating more energy in the future to meet growing customer demand. This increased demand will result from population growth, expanding industries, data centers, artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency computing, electric vehicles, and general end-use electrification such as conversions of furnaces to heat pumps. To see what the future role of energy storage may look like in South Carolina, other states that have higher penetrations of renewable energy resources were examined. The research concluded that the need for new energy storage resources will vary by utility company. A large percentage of the energy generated by Duke Energy is derived from nuclear power, which is operated as a baseload resource and has a high capacity factor. In addition, Duke Energy relies heavily on pumped storage hydropower, so Duke Energy’s need for utility-scale batteries is not as great as Dominion Energy and Santee Cooper which both operate in the central and eastern portions of the state where the future penetration of utility-scale solar PV resources is forecast to expand greatly

    What’s in a Name? Digital Repatriation Across Disciplines

    As the role of museums have changed, as well as the cultures that founded them, former morals have come into question. Any institution whose collections include Native material acquired by unethical means must now determine the best way to return this material back to the source community, physically or digitally. The term "digital repatriation” is itself contentious due to its connotations with physical repatriation, sole ownership of artifacts and, in the U.S., return of grave goods and ancestor remains. The confusion and preliminary distrust this creates necessitates a closer look at the term and its proposed alternatives to find something that more accurately describes this process in a succinct way. Through a meta-analysis of the available literature and a series of interviews with professionals working in this growing area, this paper illuminates the current state of understanding of digital repatriation across the fields as well as gaps where further study is needed, particularly on post-repatriation processes, in order to assist in the establishment of guidance to promote future success in these endeavors for all parties

    THE ANALYSIS OF TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS: THROUGH EXAMINING “FLESH AND BLOOD: MASTERPIECES FROM THE CAPODIMONTE MUSEUM”

    Traveling exhibitions are unique as they bring thoughtfully curated narratives to far-away visitors. Through the displays, visitors can physically immerse themselves in exhibitions to experience and absorb various cultures and histories without being in an academic setting. While there is benefit such as the spread of cultures, there is also the need to recognize how traveling exhibitions are communicated to the visitors and community of the location of the destination. This research will begin by exploring the significance of exhibitions from a wide perspective by examining materials such as exhibition catalogs and journal articles, using a historical studies approach to answer two research questions: how exhibitions in general served the community over time, and what or if any are the theories and models used for exhibition design. Then the research will be narrowed down to examine a specific traveling exhibition with minimum language barrier and analyze using the document analysis approach to answer two research questions: what differences are there in the way an exhibition is communicated in each location, and whether the location and the community in each location affect how the exhibition is communicated. The traveling exhibition, “Flesh and Blood: Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum,” is selected as it comprised of artworks from the Capodimonte Museum in Italy and made its way to the Seattle Art Museum and to the Kimbell Art Museum in the United States. This study concludes that there is a strong relationship between the community and the exhibition that is presented in the community, as it offers a unique experience for visitors, such as a space to satisfy curiosities, to learn, and to socialize. Additionally, examining the traveling exhibition “Flesh and Blood” reveals the differences in how the traveling exhibition is presented in each location and recommends that when organizing a traveling exhibition, there are benefits in researching the location that the exhibition will tour such as the local traditions. The findings from this study contribute to the academic research field of traveling exhibitions and may also help guide future studies when examining the relationship between traveling exhibitions and their local visitor

    BELIEF, MEANING, AND RESILIENCE: TOWARD INTEGRATIVE POLICY MAKING IN A CHANGING CLIMATE

    Climate resilience of place-based communities — often those most vulnerable and least culpable in the climate crisis — is strengthened by involving local ecological knowledge (LEK) in the development of new climate policies. Western policy making often utilizes a ‘top down’ schematic that is ill-equipped to integrate community knowledge and adaptations into the decision-making process. These top down decisions are predominantly informed by western empirical and quantitative research methods, and decision makers will benefit from a more inclusive and holistic methodology that allows for greater input from the grassroots level. This paper examines the relationship between LEK and climate resilience to see how western climate decision making benefits from these perspectives

    Identification and Function of a C3hi IL-33+ Fibroblast Population in the Lungs

    Allergic airway diseases are steadily rising despite increasing scientific inquiry into the underlying mechanisms. They are characterized by uncontrolled type 2 immune responses in the lung, and it is believed that dysregulated innate immune mediators are central to eliciting such Th2 responses. Further, it has been established that the complement system, mainly the complement component C3, is a major effector of type 2 responses in the pulmonary environment. While the role of the immune cell populations involved in lung immune responses has been outlined consistently, the role of the pulmonary stroma in participating in type 2 immunity remains unclear. Conventionally, lung fibroblasts, a part of the lung mesenchyme, are thought to primarily participate in maintaining lung homeostasis and driving wound repair via regulating collagen composition in the extracellular matrix. However, recent studies have highlighted that mesenchymal cells such as fibroblasts are extrahepatic non-immune sources of complement component C3. This proposes a dynamic research question regarding the possible role of C3 in maintaining fibroblast biology and its potential implications in driving Th2 immunity in the lung. We show that fibroblasts high for C3 maintain a matrix phenotype by driving collagen production. Further, these C3hi fibroblasts are not only enriched for IL-33, a central type 2-driving innate cytokine, but C3 is necessary for IL-33 production. Using confocal imaging and scRNA-seq analyses, we found that these cells exist as a subset of adventitial fibroblasts. Functionally, using a murine model of airway allergy, we demonstrate that these fibroblasts expand significantly upon exposure to allergens such as house dust mite. Thus, we have identified a C3hiIL-33+ adventitial fibroblast population that will be important to maintain Th2 tone in the pulmonary environment

    Transformations: The Master JG, Printmaking, and Intellectual Culture in Lyon, 1500-1550

    Dividing the city center neatly in half, the rue Mercière was the unofficial headquarters of sixteenth-century Lyon’s artistic, scientific, and literary communities. There painters lived side-by-side with goldsmiths and natural philosophers; the laboratories of scientists and alchemists abutted the workshops of printmakers and the private rooms of poets. Home to the artist at the heart of my dissertation, the Master JG (active 1517-1547), this short street was the gravitational center of intellectual life in Lyon. Within its cultural ecosystem the Master JG produced his most compelling works. Art historians have tended to describe the art of the French Renaissance as backwards or derivative. Its protagonists, they argue, imported culture from northern and southern neighbors while contributing little innovation of their own. Such accounts overlook, however, how much local communities of artists contributed to the vibrant intellectual environments of so many of France’s leading cities. A printing center and a trading hub that operated in direct opposition to Paris’ conservatism, Lyon’s eccentricities gave rise to an artistic culture that was distinct in its ambitions and unique in its complexity. It was there that early humanism and natural philosophy were closely intertwined in the propagation of a set of distinct pictorial and intellectual conceits, expressed not in written treatises but in the very images local artists produced. In Lyon, paintings and prints were each a medium for thought and for exploring ideas about creativity and creation. By recuperating a specifically Lyonnaise practice of art and situating it within a local intellectual culture, this dissertation shows that many of the prints produced in early sixteenth century Lyon were complex images for thought and must be analyzed historically
