Suspense and surprise: the role of bookmakers' spreads
No full textUncertainty in a competition's final result can affect the event's demand via suspenseand surprise. Based on a sample of more than 50,000 professional tennis matches, thispaper shows how information from bookmaker prices, implied probabilities, and pricespreads contain relevant information that explains the uncertainty in the final results of the matches. There is a negative relation between the implied probability for the favorite and the different measures of match result uncertainty proposed and a positive rela-tionship between the spread and these measures when the bookmaker sets prices based on information. This second relation disappears when the bookmaker setsprices based on betting volumes. Using pledges to improve the effectiveness of environmental information campaigns: the case of biowaste recycling
No full textThrough a field study (N = 1,519) that uses a technology to record real-time data on waste sorting, we find that offering the opportunity to sign a pledge increases the effectiveness of an environmental campaign. With a timespan of over four years, the pledge increased waste sorting participation by 4.55 to 5.10 percentage points (SD = 0.1997). The effect is greater immediately after the campaign (around 9 to 10 pp during the first 15 wk), but it remains sizable and statistically significant 150 to 210 wk after signing (3.11 to 4.45 pp).

No full textLos servicios sociales han llegado a identificarse como sistema de protección social diferenciado más tarde que otros aparatos del Estado de Bienestar, como pueden ser el sistema educativo o el sanitario. Especialmente en nuestro país, donde todo ese proceso fue más tardío que en otros países europeos, los servicios sociales han tenido poco tiempo para asentarse como tal sistema desde lo que podríamos identificar como su “nacimiento” simbólico con las leyes autonómicas de servicios sociales de los años 80, sin minusvalorar los antecedentes previos, como recordábamos en la introducción. Quizás por ello, su déficit de articulación interna, de clarificación sobre sus contenidos y objetivos estratégicos, así como la indefinición de sus límites, parecen problemas más presentes en nuestro contexto que en otros países
La revocación de las donaciones por razón del matrimonio en las crisis matrimoniales
No full textEste trabajo analiza las donaciones en el ámbito matrimonial exponiendo la problemática de su revocación en la actualidad, especialmente, a raíz de las crisis matrimoniales. La desactualización de la legislación del Código Civil español, al mantener la culpabilidad en la crisis matrimonial como causa de revocación de las donaciones, resulta incongruente con el actual sistema de divorcio acausal, generando inseguridad jurídica; problema similar al que plantea la revocación de estas donaciones en el ordenamiento navarro, a pesar de su actualización, al precisar que se declare judicialmente el incumplimiento de deberes conyugales o familiares por el donatario. Surge así la necesidad de una revisión de la figura, en ambos ordenamientos, para salvaguardar la seguridad jurídica y los derechos de las partes en situaciones de crisis matrimonial.This dissertation addresses donations within the marital sphere, analyzing the problematic of their revocation in the present day, especially in the wake of marital crises. The outdated nature of the Spanish Civil Code legislation, which maintains culpability in marital crises as grounds for the revocation of donations, is inconsistent with the current no-fault divorce system, creating legal uncertainty. A similar problem arises in the revocation of these donations under Navarrese law, as it requires a judicial declaration of the donee's breach of marital or family duties. Basque sermons from Luisena in Redin (18th-19th c.): presentation, catalogation and first research results
No full textEn este trabajo presento una colección de sermones antiguos en euskera, hallados en el valle de Lizoain (Navarra). Es, por ahora, el único testimonio documental extenso del euskera de la zona. Explico cómo se hizo el hallazgo, describo, dato y catalogo el corpus, y, tras identificar a los autores, indago en sus biografías. Además, describo algunos rasgos lingüísticos, documento las fuentes y trato sobre los hábitos de traducción. Concluyo que el uso del vasco en la predicación empezaba ya a decaer allí.Lan honetan, Lizoainibarren (Nafarroa) agertutako euskal sermoi zaharren sorta bat aur-keztu dut. Gainera, hizkuntz ezaugarri zenbait deskribatu, iturriak dokumentatu eta itzulpen ohiturez aritu naiz, eta, orobat, euskara predikaziorako herrian bazter gelditzen ari zela ondorioztatu dut.In this work I present a collection of old sermons in Basque discovered in Lizoain valley (Navarre). It is so far the sole extensive documentary testimony in the Basque language of that area. I explain how the discovery was made, I describe, date and catalogue the corpus and, after identifying the authors, I collect biographic data. Then, I describe some linguistic features, document the sources and talk about translation habits. Fast calculation methods for the magnetic field of particle lattices
No full textWith the rise of 3D printing and composite materials, components comprising dispersed magnetic particles have become more interesting due to the possibility to design magnetic elements of any shape with varying amounts of the actual magnetic material. However, quick and easy calculation methods are needed to design these components enabling the selection of the optimum required percentage of magnetic particles (millimeter parts contain billions of micro-sized particles). This work proposes a semi-analytical iterative method for the estimation of the magnetic field generated by magnetic composites formed by embedded magnetic particles. The model is compared in terms of accuracy and calculation speed with finite element analysis and the average magnetization model of the magnetic composite. Fuzzy dissimilarities and the fuzzy choquet integral of triangular fuzzy numbers on [0,1]
No full textHaving in mind the huge amount of data daily registered in the world, it is becoming increasingly important to summarize the information included in a data set. In Statistics and Computer Science, this task is successfully carried out by aggregation functions. One of the most widely applied methodologies of aggregating data is the Choquet integral. The main aim of this paper is to introduce an appropriate notion of Choquet integral in the context of fuzzy numbers. To do this, we face three challenges: the underlying uncertainty when handling fuzzy numbers, the way to order fuzzy numbers by appropriate binary relations and the way to compute the dissimilarity among fuzzy numbers. Illustrative examples are given by involving the α-order on the family of all triangular fuzzy numbers with support on [0,1].The authors acknowledge with thanks to their universities. A.F. Mejora de la experiencia de usuario en entornos virtuales inmersivos: avances en selección multiobjeto e interacción afectiva
No full textLos Entornos Virtuales Inmersivos (EVI) se utilizan para el entretenimiento, la educación,
la atención sanitaria y la colaboración remota. Los EVI permiten a los
usuarios participar e interactuar con contenido digital tridimensional de manera segura,
consistente y controlada. Tres aspectos relevantes para lograr interacciones
adecuadas entre los usuarios y los EVI son: 1) diseñar técnicas de interacción semejantes
a las acciones del mundo real; 2) integrar tanto capacidades técnicas como
emocionales; y 3) realizar evaluaciones exhaustivas de la experiencia de usuario para
permitir una mejora constante de las capacidades de los EVI.
Esta tesis doctoral ofrece una introducción detallada a los tres aspectos mencionados
anteriormente: las técnicas de interacción (con un enfoque en la selección); el campo
de la Computación Afectiva y cómo puede mejorar la experiencia de usuario en los
EVIs; y los métodos implícitos y explícitos para evaluar tanto necesidades técnicas
como emocionales con el fin de lograr una experiencia de usuario completa. Esta tesis
también destaca las actuales limitaciones en la implementación de estos aspectos en
los entornos virtuales y propone una nueva técnica de selección multiobjeto para los
EVIs, así como un marco de diseño para guiar el desarrollo de EVIs con capacidades
emocionales.Immersive Virtual Environments (IVE) are applied in entertainment, education,
healthcare and remote collaboration. IVEs permit users to engage and interact with
three-dimensional digital content in a safe, consistent and controlled manner. Three
relevant aspects to achieve valuable interactions between users and IVEs are: 1) designing
interaction techniques that resemble real-world actions; 2) integrating both
technical and emotional capabilities; and 3) conducting exhaustive evaluations of the
user experience to enable constant improvement of IVEs’ capabilities.
This Ph.D. dissertation provides a comprehensive introduction to the three aforementioned
aspects: interaction techniques (focusing on selection); the field of Affective
Computing and how it can enhance user experience in IVEs; and implicit and explicit
methods to evaluate both technical and emotional necessities to achieve a complete
user experience. This thesis also highlights current shortcomings in the implementation
of these aspects in virtual environments and proposes a new multiple object
selection technique for IVEs and a design framework to guide the development of

No full textA la hora de entrenar un modelo de clasificación de aprendizaje automático, en
muchas ocasiones, nos encontramos con conjuntos de datos desbalanceados,
que son problemas donde una clase, la mayoritaria, tiene muchos más ejemplos
que la otra, la minoritaria. Esta disparidad de los datos ocasiona que los modelos
tiendan a aprender la clase mayoritaria creando un sesgo hacia esa clase. Por ello,
clasifican pocas veces los ejemplos en la clase minoritaria, que además suele ser
la de interés.
Para solucionar este problema, una de las metodologías más populares es el
sobremuestreo u oversampling, que consiste en generar ejemplos sintéticos de la
clase minoritaria hasta lograr un balance.
FSDR-SMOTE (Feature Standard Deviation Random SMOTE) es una técnica reciente
para abordar los problemas no balanceados mediante la eliminación de ruido,
clustering, la creación del conjunto de ejemplos de bordes y aplicando Random
SMOTE.
El objetivo principal del trabajo fin de grado es entender, implementar y comparar
los resultados de FSDR-SMOTE frente a los resultados proporcionados en el
artículo original. Otro objetivo es realizar una contribución a la librería inbalancedlearn, de forma que el método FSDR-SMOTE pueda ser utilizado por cualquier
interesado.
Además de esto, se pretende crear un nuevo método, basado en FSDR-SMOTE, que
