Recycling bovine ear tags for phase change material encapsulation via electrospinning
In this study, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from waste bovine ear tags has been processed and recycled as shell material to encapsulate phase change materials (PCMs), enabling the fabrication of thermoregulating core-shell nanofibers via coaxial electrospinning. Notably, this process was achieved in few steps and without the need for heating equipment to melt the injected materials, enhancing its simplicity. Two PCMs were selected based on their melting points; octadecane (OCTA) near room temperature and eicosane (EICO) near body temperature. Composite fibers were prepared at different core solution concentrations (10, 20, 40 and 80 % w/v), with the highest encapsulation efficiency and thermal properties obtained for samples with 80 % (w/v). TPU/PCM electrospun nanofibers were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with average diameters between 400 and 700 nm. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) suggested no further chemical reactions during the fabrication process. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated good thermal stability, with latent heats of 62.9 2 J/g and 81.4 J/g for TPU/OCTA80 and TPU/EICO80 membranes, respectively. Thermal cycling tests were conducted for 150 cycles, showing a 5 % enthalpy reduction in TPU/OCTA80 due to crystalline phase degradation, while TPU/EICO80 exhibited a 2 % increase, likely due to PCM restructuring; however, long-term trends suggest a potential decline. This simple, cost-effective and environmentally friendly fabrication process highlights the potential of upcycling TPU waste and offers a scalable approach for developing TPU/PCM membranes with promising applications in textile thermal management systems. The SEM images were taken by UCTAI service at the Universidad Pública de Navarra. AI-driven predictive modeling of homogeneous bead geometry for WAAM processes
With the increasing number of applications employing additive manufacturing solutions, these deposition processes must become more autonomous, which can be helped by the application of machine learning monitoring. This study presents a fully online, low-cost framework for real-time quality control in Invar wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Synchronized current and voltage signals are transformed into spatial heatmaps and temporal Markov transition images, which are processed by an optimized ResNet-18 to classify the quality of each layer on-the-fly. Validation using cross-validation on an internal Invar dataset yields an accuracy of up to 94% under clean conditions, with inference times below 20 ms per layer, enabling deployment during natural cooling between layers. These results demonstrate the feasibility of non-intrusive signal-based anomaly detection, enabling rapid identification of weld spalls and useful for scalable and automated WAAM monitoring in industrial environments.Open Access funding provided by Universidad Pública de Navarra. Photodegradation of paracetamol on CaAlGa and ZnAlTi mixed metal oxides (MMO) synthesized via LDH from Al-saline slags
Preparation of CaAlGa and ZnAlTi mixed metal oxides (MMO) synthesized via CaAlGa–hydrocalumites and
ZnAl–hydrotalcite impregnated with TiO2 using saline slags as aluminum source, is reported for the first time.
The solids obtained by calcination at 750 ºC are highly crystalline and the photocatalytically active crystalline
phases Ca12Al14-xGaxO33, ZnO, ZnAl2O4 and Zn2TiO4 have been identified. The MMO were used for the catalytic
degradation of paracetamol under UV irradiation, obtaining good results for the removal of this emerging
pollutant, reaching a removal above 90 % for the sample containing 25 % Ga3 +, under the optimum photodegradation conditions ([Paracetamol]0 = 40 mg/L and catalyst dose = 1 g/L), showing better results than the
commercial photocatalyst TiO2–P25 from Degussa and other more complex catalysts based on MMO. In addition,
this photocatalyst was submitted to a cyclic process study, finding that it maintained its performance after at
least two cycles. This research was funded by Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through Spanish Research Agency (Reference PID2023-146935OB-C21 and PID2023-146935OB-C22).
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is one of the world's most important forages for livestock feeding. It is a legume that provides of high-quality fodder, with considerable content of protein, carbohydrates and minerals to cattle. Since alfalfa crops typically undergo multiple harvests in a year and demonstrate rapid regrowth, timely monitoring become increasingly critical to secure a satisfactory forage quality. However, farmers face challenges not only to estimate relevant parameters considered for animal nutrition but also to decide the optimal harvesting time with the adequate balance between yield and quality. In addition, from a climate change view, the agricultural systems must develop in a more sustainable activity to reduce the environmental impact and satisfy a growing population with the current change in consumption habits. To tackle substantial challenges in a forage production system (yield and quality estimations, along with identifying optimal harvesting time) in a context of climate change scenarios, it is essential to obtain spatio-temporal information in real-time.
The rise of remote sensing technologies applied to agriculture could improve the traditional estimations of alfalfa biomass and quality prior to harvest. Besides, increase of available devices and platforms (e.g. satellite, spectral proximal sensors) might support decision-making for effective monitoring of crops. Despite the important role that alfalfa plays in the livestock industry, attempts to examine the application of remote sensing techniques are often focused on major field crops, such as wheat. This dissertation aims to integrate new remote and proximal sensing perspectives to estimate yield and quality parameters at different phenological stages of alfalfa under lab and field conditions.
This was addressed using benchtop and miniaturised spectrometers in laboratory (Chapter I), passive remote sensing such as satellite Sentinel-2 (Chapter II) and proximal sensor in field conditions (Chapter III and IV). Chapter I examined the applicability of one benchtop and four handled-type spectrometers to estimate soluble sugars, starch, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and mineral content in dried and ground alfalfa samples. The findings indicated that use of partial least square (PLS) regression model based on reflectance was able to explain the variability for sucrose, N, potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) contents with high accuracies when a miniaturised spectrometer of full range (350-2500 nm) was used. The results emphasize the feasibility of using portable devices, considering the high accuracy estimations and their versatility to be used either in the lab or the field.
Chapter II assessed the generation of yield estimations models at three phenological stages of development (early vegetative, late vegetative, and budding stages) using vegetation indices (VIs) derived from satellite Sentinel-2 images and their combination with meteorological data. This chapter compared one conventional multilinear regression and two algorithms in the context of machine learning (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator - LASSO and Random Forest - RF). The results revealed that yield estimations were not optimal when either VIs or meteorological data were used singularly as the predictor. However, the combination of VIs and meteorological data significantly improved the yield estimations. In addition, estimations at late vegetative and budding stages were more accurate compared to early vegetative, although such accuracies were achieved depending on the algorithm used. For instance, RF explained better the yield variability at early and late vegetative than the other models, whereas conventional multilinear regression provided the best yield estimation at the bud stage. The chapter’s outcomes suggest the possibility to extend the estimations for multiple years to increase the accuracy of models.
The prediction of aboveground biomass and quality parameters using proximal hyperspectral sensor in field conditions based on canopy and leaf reflectance is addressed in Chapter III. The spectra, growing degree days (GDD) and meteorological data were used as predictors in three different models. Additionally, specific region of spectra associated with each parameter were identified. This chapter revealed that the model’s performance differs among parameters analysed, which could be associated with the intraspecific variability of leaf trait. The results showed that the best estimations, based on their high accuracies and high coefficients of determination, were obtained for biomass, sucrose, flavonoids, and N content. For these traits, visible and near infrared region of spectrum were selected as highly important predictors. Regarding to mineral content estimations, P, boron (B) and zinc (Zn) showed the best results, and the most important predictors were selected at the short-wave infrared region.
In the Chapter IV, C and N isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N, respectively) and amino acids contents were estimated under water limited conditions for six alfalfa cultivars using the hyperspectral spectrometer in field. These were analysed throughout crop cycle to explore the question of whether it is possible to find a potential biomarker that could indicates the optimal time of harvest. The results showed that the isotopic composition was successfully estimated with a very high accuracy, which open the possibility of evaluating plant responses under water stress given the valuable information that isotopes offer about plant status. Moreover, the amino acid with the best estimation was for γ-aminobutyric-acid (GABA) in both irrigated and water limited conditions. GABA content presented a considerable decrease at bud stage, point in which the crop harvest is recommended for showing a best balance between yield and quality. Since this method can be applied to different environments or several abiotic stresses, this may potentially contribute to quantifying other metabolites of plants.
Finally, future perspectives are given at the end of this thesis that may help explain the directions to follow according to the findings. Overall, this thesis highlighted the need for new efficient approaches in adoption of technology as well as in application of data science and machine learning techniques to support the decisions in field. This integrative point from field to lab could provide valuable knowledge to be integrated in agriculture science.
Insurance Contrac Act establishes the general framework of insured´s protection, devoting its third article to sketching out the requisites that, imperiously, have to keep the different conditions added into an insurance contract. The absence of a real negotiation obliges legislative to state minimun standards so that any condition, either general or particular, have legal effects. However, content control can cause clauses` nullity if they have harmful effects, or if restrict rights and they haven´t being specially transparent. In order to understand when that happens, not only both kind of clauses are studying, but also risk-delimit clauses, because even though them aren´t named in law, its knowledge become essential to understand and distinguish between unfair and rights-restrictive clauses.Máster Universitario en Acceso a la Abogacía y a la Procura por la Universidad Pública de NavarraAbokatutzarako eta Prokuradoretzarako Sarbideko Unibertsitate Masterra Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
How the pretreatment temperature of zeolitic catalysts can affect the reaction temperature of methanol to olefins and gasoline processes
The dehydration of methanol to produce light olefins and gasoline, known as MTO (methanol-to-olefins) process requires acidic catalysts that maintain their acidity at reaction temperatures. Zeolites, such as SAPOs and ZSM-5, are commonly used for this purpose due to their acidic centers. The initial step in these experiments involves the activation or pretreatment of these solids to remove physically adsorbed water from their pores. Inadequate pretreatment can lead to the destruction of the existing Brönsted sites through the dihydroxylation of surface -OH groups. Therefore, it is crucial to pretreat the zeolites properly to preserve the Brönsted sites. One method is to subject the fresh catalyst to programmed dehydration, which involves desorption at a controlled temperature while monitoring the appearance of water that results from Brönsted site dihydroxylation. The temperature at which the dehydration peak appears determines the optimal reaction temperature. The results presented in this work will demonstrate the progressive deactivation of the catalysts when the reaction temperature exceeds 400 °C.A.G. is grateful for financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) through project PID2023-146935OB-C21
Registrado el 15 de marzo de 2021.This Doctoral Thesis is based on a crossover clinical trial, conducted within the E-FIT (Physical Exercise, Health and Quality of Life) group entitled 'Effects of a multicomponent physical exercise programme on the immune system, inflammatory profile, physical fitness and persistent perceived symptoms (fatigue/tiredness, musculoskeletal pain, shortness of breath) in survivors of coronavirus disease (COVID-19): A crossover clinical trial'.
Our working hypothesis is that with the application of a 6-week multicomponent exercise programme we could reduce the degree of perception of persistent perceived symptoms (fatigue/tiredness, musculoskeletal pain, shortness of breath), through modulation of the endocannabinoid system, improve the immune profile through gradual modification of the immune system caused by either natural age progression or COVID-19 infection, increase physical fitness (functional capacity, aerobic fitness and muscular strength) through mechanical and endocrine action, and reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines derived from blood mononuclear peripheral vascular monocytes, increase physical fitness (functional capacity, aerobic fitness and muscle strength) through mechanical and endocrine action, and reduce the production of peripheral blood mononuclear derived inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha through increased production and release of anti-inflammatory cytokines due to skeletal muscle contraction, which could contribute to reducing the inflammatory process that typically occurs in COVID-19 infection.
The objectives of this study were: to evaluate the modification in immunological parameters, physical condition, inflammatory profile and changes in perceived persistent symptoms (fatigue/tiredness, musculoskeletal pain, shortness of breath) after 6 weeks of multicomponent and supervised physical exercise, in addition to the standard medical treatment scheme in patients with persistent symptoms of COVID-19.
Background: The post-COVID-19 condition is a novel condition for which guidelines recommend supervised exercise, but evidence guiding safe and effective interventions is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a tailored exercise program (EXER-COVID trial) on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, long COVID symptoms, cognitive performance, quality of life, depression, and psychological distress.
Methods: This crossover study included 100 participants with post-COVID-19 conditions (mean age 48 years; 68% women) at a single center in Spain from March 1, 2021, to September 30, 2022. Participants were randomized 1:1 to 6 weeks of muscle power resistance training (PRT) followed by 6 weeks of usual care (Group 1 [AB], n=50) or 6 weeks of usual care followed by 6 weeks of muscle power RT (Group 2 [BA], n=50).
Results: The intervention significantly improved the peak VO2 by 2.10 mL/kg/min [95% CI 1.25 to 2.94], P<0.001. Per-protocol analyses revealed similar results (2.40 mL/kg/min [95% CI 1.56 to 3.25]), P<0.001. No carry-over or period effects were detected. After power PRT, strength (1RM) was improved for pectoral press, bilateral leg-press, knee extension, and back press (P<0.001). Significant decreases were found in psychological distress scores (P<0.001). The intervention also improved quality of life (P=0.041), cognitive capabilities (P=0.014) and cognitive performance (P=0.036). Furthermore, the exercise program reduced seven of the 22 long-COVID symptoms, including weakness (RR= 0.75 [95% CI 0.59 to 0.95]), dyspnea (RR= 0.56 [95% CI 0.39 to 0.82]), hearing loss/tinnitus (RR= 0.86 [95% CI 0.75 to 0.98]), change in appetite (RR= 0.84 [95% CI 0.72 to 0.97]), memory loss (RR= 0.84 [95% CI 0.72 to 0.97]), stress (RR= 0.80 [95% CI 0.64 to 0.99]) and apathy/depression (RR= 0.80 [95% CI 0.64 to 0.99]).
Conclusions: A supervised 6-week PRT intervention program safely improved cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, and mental health in participants with post-COVID-19 conditions. These findings provide clinicians with evidence to support exercise as standard co-therapy and warrant further study. Trial registration: NCT04797871.
The present work addresses the legal issues related to the use of works protected by intellectual property in the training of AI models, analyzing the solution proposed by current regulations, principally by the AI Act and Directive (EU) 2019/790, and examining how this should be adapted to the capabilities and peculiarities presented by these new technological tools, especially in relation to the lawful access to works and the opt-out faculty of the authors. It is observed that these regulations aim to offer significant protection to creators, compared to other jurisdictions that are more open to technological progress; situation exacerbated in Spain. However, this whole issue is not yet settled, and we will have to wait for the way in which the courts and EU institutions interpret the application of these regulations to offer a solution to the existing conflict between innovation and copyright.Máster Universitario en Acceso a la Abogacía y a la Procura por la Universidad Pública de NavarraAbokatutzarako eta Prokuradoretzarako Sarbideko Unibertsitate Masterra Nafarroako Unibertsitate Publikoa
In recent years, there has been a significant expansion in the utilisation of ICT in language teaching and learning. In order to provide students with a quality education, teacher training is of paramount importance. Effective teacher training ensures that educators are well-equipped with the latest pedagogical strategies, technological tools, and interdisciplinary approaches necessary for fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Furthermore, in view of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030(2015), the efforts of teachers increasingly focus on promoting sustainability awareness. This holistic approach not only enhances the educational experience but also aligns with broader societal goals, making language education a powerful tool for positive changeThis paper will present a case study with 14pre-service secondary school teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Spain. The purpose is to investigate whether pre-service teachers seefeasible to implementDidactic Audiovisual Translation(DAT), particularly didactic voice-over, in the EFL classroom, and whether it can enhance integrated language skills and promote ecological awareness. The participants were initially introduced to DAT and its practical application within the recently research-led TRADILEX platform (Fernández-Costales,TalavánandTinedo-Rodríguez2023). Subsequently, participants were required to carry outa didactic voice-over lesson plan (LP) aboutthe European-funded project Speak4Nature-Interdisciplinary Approaches on Ecological Justice. Aftersubmittingthe60-minute voice-overLP, created in accordance with the TRADILEX methodology (TalavánandLertola2022), participants were required to develop a second LP of the same duration, utilising the samevideo as a foundation and tailored to the specific needs of their target learners. In order to triangulate the data, participants’opinionswere gatheredvia a feedback questionnaire, an observation rubric completed by the two teacher-researchers, and a focus group involving five participants. The analysis yields encouraging findings, sincepre-service EFL teachers perceived the integration of DAT in secondary educationas potentially advantageous for fostering the development of integrated language skill and ecological awareness. The Speak4Nature project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 101086202
The decarbonization of Spanish electricity companies: Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy, a comparative story (1960-2020)
This study explores the technological advances in electricity generation by Spanish leading firms from 1969 to 2020, in the context of the transition towards a low-carbon economy. The aim is to assess whether the entire sector progressed uniformly with the same technologies or if distinct patterns of technological diversification emerged among specific companies. The findings reveal a technological convergence among industry leaders, particularly in recent years. However, in previous stages, different technological profiles allowed certain companies to initiate decarbonization processes earlier than others. In the current landscape, addressing the challenge of energy transition requires comprehensive studies that consider the pivotal role of companies. This approach enables a holistic understanding of the likelihood of success in achieving a full decarbonization.
